  • Viral SIngh

Can any one help me decide between these two,
    1. MS in VLSI systems & Microelectronics at George washington university.
2.ME in Microelectronics & Photonics at Stevens institute of technology.

    • http://www.happyschoolsblog.com HSB Counselor

Hi Viral, As far as the curriculum is concerned you are the best judge to it. But yes the basic difference between the degree programmes is, MS can lead to a PhD while a ME programme usually can not help getting into a PhD. In other words MS is a thesis based programme. See if this information helps you decide. Both the Universities are good and reputed. You can choose any one of them.
      Good day!

      • Viral SIngh

thanks for your advice, this will help.

    Hi,

My GRE score is 1140 (780Q+360V). My Engineering percentage is 69%. I have 5 years work experience.

Which colleges should I aim for? If I apply now, will I be able to join the Fall 2011 batch?

    Please guide me.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Keerthi

    • Keerthi Kiran M

Can someone please help me out?

      Thanks,

      Keerthi.

      • Sharath

        Hey Keerthi,

I am doing my masters in Tennessee Tech. Please mention your stream in engineering and also the major you want to apply for. Having a 5-year work experience would always be an advantage. You can choose good schools, if not the top notch ones, whose ranks range from 50-100. Also mention your TOEFL score. Applying now would be difficult for you to come here this Fall as the deadlines for almost all the good schools got over. Hope this helps, thanks!

I have not applied to any top end university, due to financial considerations.

    Now, my doubt is:

    a) What are my chances of being admitted and, possibly, securing scholarship in these universities (especially Purdue and Texas A&M)?

    b) How much impact would be made by the fact I have done quite less research work and research papers?

    Waiting for your reply…..

I've given my toefl on 19th dec and expect a pretty good score.

I have done Electronics & Telecom engg wid Ist class and have a very strong academic and co-curricular background.

I m looking for M.S. in Electrical engg for fall -11.

Actually im rlly confused whether i would get any descent universities wid this score, or whether i should give my gre again in jan, bt thn most of the good universities have their deadlines on 1st jan n 15th jan. and if i repeat my gre in jan, i wld miss most of them.

Can u plz suggest me wht shld i do at this point of time as i m rlly confused whether shld i give my gre again in jan or to apply for fall-12.

My requirements from a college are tht it shld be good in core electronics, strong with research cell nd shld have a effective placement cell.

It would be rlly gr8 if u would help me find a way thru…

    • E. Natarajan

      Please see my responses earlier.

You may give GRE again in Jan that should help. Fall 2011 is ok. If you have excellent UG score say GPA 8 and above, try for Maryland, Ohio State, Virginiatech, texas austin, A&M; UF gainsville, UMinnesota. SUNY Buffalo, Iowa state, SUNY Stonybrook, look for universities having maximum MS seats. If you have surplus funds, then Univ of southeren california.

Prefer state universities , being excellent track record, every possibility in higher end universities – MIT, Caltech, Universities of Califormia, UIUC, or Georgiatech,You may include UTA, UF (likely scholarship), others may be OSU, NCSU, Clemson, Texas A&M, NYU Polytechnic, Arizona State, New Mexico State.

Frankly no idea.. You may try.. UMN, twincities, Univ of Florida, Ohio State Columbus, North Carolina State, Texas A&M College Station, Virginia tech, NYU Polytechnic, Arizona State, New Mexico State, Clemson, Iowa State

Choose universities with higher acceptance ratio. Repeat GRE, this might enhance assistantship chances..

Can you please suggest me a university for MS in ECE?

My GRE score is 1050. Verbal 400, Quant 650.

  • sunil

please suggest me universities for MS in electrical engg

    GRE score 1360 (quant-800 and Verbal-560)

    UG GPA 3.3

BTech frm average reputed college. no major projects or papers.

    • E Natarajan

1360 is a very good score especially Quant. Look for Tier 1 universities.

Cherry pick from this list or look at the NCES website where the number of seats available are mentioned under college navigator. Try to choose universities having more than 100 seats in the EE specialization, (example University of Southern California has 425 seats for MS, sure to get and very expensive), Drexel has 38 seats for MS EE as per NCES site and you may perhaps avoid universities with lesser seats – for the scores (1300-1400 range).

You may consider the following possible options.

      I) MIT, Univ of Illinois at UC, Georgiatech

II) Univ of Minnesota, Purdue, UTexas at Austin, Univ of Florida

III) Ohio State Columbus, North Carolina State, Texas A&M College Station, Virginia tech

IV) NYU Polytechnic, Arizona State, New Mexico State.

      Add your choices………. Best Wishes

thnx a lot 4 ur valuable suggestions.. i hv applied to ut dallas n arlington and SUNY buffalo and stony brook.. shud i expect financial aid in form assistantship wid dis score?

      • Jake

        Hi E. Natarajan.

I could not find that number of seats for EE specialization that you mentioned.

Could you please tell me where exactly it is located on that NCES website. A link would help a lot.

        Thanks

        Jake

        • E. Natarajan

Hello Jake & Every one, NCES site is valuable to give complete snap shot of a US university. Take for example USC
          http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=University
          'Expand all'.

Under electrical engineering you have 54 BS seats and 425 MS seats. More the number of seats greater possibility of admission for lower GRE scores. Best Wishes

          • Jake

@ Natarajan: Thanks a lot man.

      • sunil

hie natrajan.. i had a query regardin admissn process.. how mch universities should i apply to ensure my admissian to a good university with some assistantship?

        • E Natarajan

You may perhaps assume 50 – 60% success rate. It is better to have handful for making a choice. So apply for 9 – 12 universities.

No idea about assistantship. it is better to assume unlikely and if you get then all the better – include Univ of Florida.

          • isrish

  • Supriya

    Hello HSB

I am using this list and have also downloaded the NSC excel file with all the details. But I still have a confusion. Please clarify.

Is TEXAS A & M UNIVERSITY at rank 20 and TEXAS A & M UNIVERSITY at rank 69 in the above list are the same institution with different department or different institution under TAMU system? If different please try to convey us that which one of it college station and which one is Kingsville?

Thank you for your support till now.

    • E Natarajan

Rank 20 is for College Station, I suppose. You may ignore the other one.

  • Olamide B Akinbulumo

I need to study Renewable energy in Master's degree. Please give the details on how to enroll. Thanks.

    • E Natarajan

Looks to me that you must try another attempt at GRE and you should be able to improve the scores to at least 1350.

Michigan, Texas A&M, Texas at Austin appear very doubtful for 1010. At 1350, it is optimistic. Arizona state University is likely.

  • Jake

I don't understand. Please Tell me HSB why is Texas A & M University on this list twice. first at serial# 20 then at serial #69.

    • Hari Krishna Veturi

whoa, Texas A&M University has different campus centers, that the main reason!

  • jainish

    What about NYU-Poly????

    • E Natarajan

I have heard that NYU is a very good university, so what if it did not appear in rankings? By the time, you leave this institute, they may be among the top. Another relatively not well known and very good for EE is New Mexico State.

      • Pradeep Saraf

        Hulo Mr. Natarajan
