I am planning for MS in computer science for fall 2013. My GRE score is 297 [V-143 & Q-154] and writing section score is 2.5/6.
I completed my BE in Computer science from Mumbai Univ with distinction. Also from past 1 year I am associated with an UK based IT firm.
I am considering following universities on the basis of their location, program structure and rank.
Kent State Univ, SUNY Albany, San Diego State Univ, Florida International Univ, California Lutheran Univ., Univ of Central Missouri, Texas Tech Univ.
I am bit concerned about the last 3 universities. CLU has high fees. UCM has no national ranking but is very economical.
What do you suggest? Are the listed universities good in terms of placement?
Also is it advisable to go further with my average scores. What role does my distinction BE degree and job experience will play in the admission process?
Should I select good universities other than these listed above?

Well for course structure, you are the best judge to it. Check through the curriculum thoroughly. Try to get in touch with the faculty members and senior students.
Syracuse university finds a better place in rankings compared to University of Florida and University of Arizona. Also as Syracuse is in New York, you may have better prospects for internship and placements.

I want to know in terms of ranking, Should I give preference to US-National Rankings or in particular the Course rank?
As you mentioned SU is ranked better than UOA. But UOA stands 3rd in MIS program in the US Best Rankings and Syracuse stands 1st among the list of i-schools and UFL is offered by
Hough B-School which is within top 15 top B-Schools in the US.
As a result, I am in dilemma to pick one amongst the three.
Also I wanted know abt UTD as I have an admit from them as well.Is it any better than the rest of the colleges list above.
I would like to know since Syracuse is in NY, would the salary offered be better than that in UFL or UOA.

Go for full time programmes for your bachelor’s degree. You will find may programmes matching your interests. You can go for a bachelors degree and a Masters later on.
Although there is no harm in online programmes. Choice should be totally based out on your family situation. An online programme will certainly help as you would be able to give sufficient time to to your family business.

Hi Ram, Yes GRE and IELTS score are on a lower side. Acads are certainly good. You will not find much trouble in the visa process if you have an admission offer from the University.
IELTS I believe you may need to retake as most of the Universities ask for 6.5 wit no band score less than 6.0.

Hi Adixit, It is better to take up GRE scores as it adds to your profile and provides admission committee to assess your candidature. But yes if you have a strong research background, you may be accepted without GRE scores too.
But my advice would always be to take up GRE for a hassle free admissions process.

You can certainly consider Universities ranked among top 50. There are many Universities offering MS CS in spring session. Look for Universities where you find current projects in unison with your interests and work experience.

none of the above colleges will provide funding for ms. but for phd funding is available in case of international students , but requires good scores and at least one published paper. If one doesnt have a paper funding at the time of joining is hard to get, but still afterwards one can try and get GRAs or TAs.

There is no necessary to convert to a 4 point scale bro the reason is conversion varies from one country to another so it wud be better to apply without converting the department will convert them if needed so its not an issue 🙂 Cheers

Nanotechnology and Embedded are two leading departments where UG graduate seek to do Masters. And your TOELF and GRE score is low if possible take TOEFL cos the minimum is 92+ required to assure 85% of chances for admission and GRE its very low bro need 295+

if they score great marks in gre that means they have good potential, dont think EAMSET is the golden line with which u judge a students worth…. u should probably think the other way around, why are students with great EAMSET scores not getting great gre scores ? probably because they are only good at mugging things and dont have a logical brain…. why are you saying that u r so worried about the students who went to the US becoz of their gre scores? i think u resent the fact that people u judged stupid are getting a chance at a better life than u envisioned for them…. 😀

It is difficult. You must be lucky to get into a college ranked from 1to 100.Try University of Southern California for MS. you will get it. Otherwise try colleges like Arizona tech, UMBC. My scores were almost same. i had a total of 1140 and academics of 85 in mu UG.I got into USC and UMBC only. Improve your GRE score if possible

I appreciate your aim to pursue masters in clinical research in the field of dentistry.however,the graduation (b.d.s) from india is not valid in united states.you have an option called advanced placement programme for international dentists.more than ten universities have this program.all you need to do is to take nbde part 1 exam,and pass (75 on 100) it.if you are confident,u can take part 2 exam as well.but most universities need part 1 of nbde.then,u will be directly joining the 3rd year of d.d.s(equivalent to b.d.s in india) and u need to complete the final year as well.once you succesfully complete this programme,u will be awarded american d.d.s degree.later if you pass the exam for license,u can start practicing in u.s.a AND ALSO U WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO PURSUE A MASTERS DEGREE IN U.S.A.i am not sure whether we need a green card for pursuing masters and continuing education.

Archana, 279 is low for most of the good univs. You should estimate which univs. u r applying 2 b4 proceeding. if u plan to apply to the higher bracket, consider taking gre again. for engineering/ economics masters, they generally prefer a 160+ in math and 145+ in verbals, as a standard. all the best !

Dear Vamshee krishna, Credit hours is basically a Unit of measurement that counts for your Graduate study. For eg ; a professional masters in CS would demand 30 credits. Presuming a course is 3 credits ( 3 hours of teaching /workload per course) . Hence you need to 10 courses.

Dear Ram and Vineel, I am not sure about other Universities but I can comment based on Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT C) . There is a program called as bridge program in IIT C. This program is basically for students whose Majors doesn’t match their Intended Graduate Program. This bridge program basically is of 3 courses like
CS 201 – Intro to Java, CS 401 deals with data structures using Java.
CS 402 deals with Computer Architecture and Java, an intense course
If you have been working on Software projects for some time, it is possible to get you a waiver based on the proficiency exam that you need to take.
DEFICIENCY Course by definition is required to be done to plug knowledge gap that may exist in you in that area hence these courses DOESN’T carry credits to your Masters.

297 is some where around 1100.

Will it be a wise decision to go with NYU Poly. After analyzing the tuition fees of both places, there is a difference of $10,000 for the entire 2 yr course. However I am aware that living expenses at NYC will be double that of NCSU.Also proximity to jobs in NYC is a plus.Can somebody offer their opinions? Thanks!

Man… you have real low scores….it would be very tough to get a good university along with scholarship. Improve on your English if you want to do your MS from any foreign country. Work hard and take GRE and TOFEL again then apply for MS from any foreign university. Best of luck

If you feel taking New pattern would increase your score , you can very well take a 3rd Attempt . As for your information , the Verbal in New Pattern is very Easier than the OLd pattern because of the Lots of Reading Comprehension and No Analogies and Antonyms section . So i guess you can very well improve your Verbal Score in New Pattern . Since you have gone down in quants in second attempt , if you think you can put little effort to increase it after having seen all the New syllabus for Quants in New Revised GRE , Then I would strongly suggest you to have a 3rd attempt which would surely be of Great Value if you put little more effort only in Quants .

You must have atleast 80 Above ( and some universities ask 20 above in Each Section )in TOEFL for doing MS in any good US Universities . So I would strongly Suggest you to take the TOEFL Exam again to score above 80 .
Regarding your GRE Scores ,I would say it is better you take that also again if and only if you think you can improve the score . But to be precise about your eligibilty , you need to mention you Verbal and Quants ( Each out of 170 ) . It would be much more better if you mention them out of 1600 using the concordance table( Used to convert New Pattern Score to Old Pattern Score ) . hi anjali..i would suggest you to retake your GRE if u r interested in phD only coz most univ look for atleast 1100+ for admission if you have work experiance..else for fresher the requirement is even much higher especially in our field(pharmacy).

Its really not complicated…. in USA GPA is for 4 that means maximum you could get in a exam is 4,where as in india (100) …if You get 80% that mean you got 80 out of 100(india)…….where as in USA –80 marks for 100, how much if the maximum marks allowed which is 4……= 4/100X80=3.2

I have a distinction (77%) aggregate in my under grad from Goa University. With these basic necessities taken care, I am hoping to apply and get admits from Georgia Tech, UCLA, Virginia Tech, University of Maryland, North Carolina. i’m Mike from Nigeria.studied Mechanical Engineering.But I made a horribly pathetic GPA in my 1st degree studies(below 2.0)..ok before u crucify me or burst out lauhging,let me explain how it happened.I had expected to move to the U.S to complete my tertiary education because my family reside in the U.S and had filed for me to join them…so i focused more on the immigration issues and paid little attention to my academics here in Nigeria.I had believed i’d move to the U.S before graduation,since the U.S immigrations had approved my application…Unfortunately it didn’t turn out as i had expected.Due to the humongous number of applicants,it takes a lot of years to process the immigration stuff. …Now the question;is there any way i can pursue an MBA in any U.S school with such GPA???…i’m yet to write the GRE.but there’s no point writing the GRE if no school will accept such poor/pathetic GPA.
Brother, i just want to encourage you about the fact that you must try to get yourself admitted taking the GRE. Remember something is better than nothing. If the the GPA is poor so what, you can do well in GRE and TOEFL. Best of luck.

Have a look at their Class Profile . The Class Profile shows the kind of students they usually give acceptance.
Regarding the Fees, some universities ask you to apply for scholarship well in advance. The best would be for you to contact the desired person of the University. Email them all your specific Questions.

Sorry to say but UCLA doesn’t confirm scholarships in advance. They look at a lot of things. Why don’t you people forget that US universities give preference to US citizens first and then they make exceptions if they find talent in other categories. Additionally, they would help you with your tuition or housing in campus. They not gonna support you fully. Come prepared and have multiple options. Nobody gonna reply from there unless you contact the International student counsellor and you actually apply.

"FIT" I SUPPOSE
I would like to advice people not to go to Texas A & M University, College Station, TX for doing Masters or Ph.D. programs. One reason is that it is next to impossible to get any funding especially in Engineering programs. They give admission to students, professors try to extract free research work from students by false promise of funding next semester, next year and it never comes. About job fair/career fair, company representatives openly say that they do not recruit international students. It is a very conservative and boring town. Avoid this university.

I did apply to 3 universities in USA for admission into PhD Food Science (with specialization in Food Microbiology) for Spring 2011. I have not yet received admission decision from Univ. of Florida and Univ. of Georgia but North Carolina State Univ. sent a mail to say they would not offer me admission. In view of the fact that Spring 2011 is ‘around the corner’, I wish to apply to some other univs. for Fall 2011. Kindly suggest some univs. I could send my application.

I am planning my MS at Germany for financial reasons. My GRE was 1070 with quants 670 and verbal 400. Tofel was 97. I already have MTech in Digital E&C from VTU, Karnataka. My main motive for MS now is because i learn that for PHd, they hardly recognize Mtech done from non premier universities. I consulted a consultancy who shockingly told that there would be VISA related issues for my MS as i already have a MTech. Is that so??

Thanks a lot for ur feedback. I actually do not want to get into industrial or mech engg per se. I found that in some colleges, the subjects in IT and cs can be chosen as electives for this course. The core subjects are more related to management and not to ind engg.
The reason I do not want to do an MBa is because :-
a> I do not have any work experience as I'm currently studying in the fourth year of engg in India.
b> I have not decided on what field I would do an MBa in.
I thus feel i should do an MS in EM. if you feel otherwise and for your views, please inform me immediately.
Your argument is right, but in current job market you will be competing with guys who have degree in CS to get job. You are not true Engg Mgmnt to apply in industrial firms. I think MIS is better for you.

Now I have completed M.Tech and I am looking to do MS in USA. But while selecting Universities for admission, should I consider my M.Tech marks and apply or should I consider B E Marks and apply.
I have 67.35% in M.Tech but in BE I have 61%. On what basis I should select universities for applying to MS. Should I consider M.Tech percentage or BE percentage.

well, acaedemics go like 10th-86%, 12th-84%, engg in ece with 68% with 8backlogs ive cleared all of them. I’ve done my project work from rocket launching centre SHAR, nd am also gonna take an internship at electronics company which manufactures cellphones for 4months. I’ve gotta score of 1100 split is 680quant nd 420 verbal nd expecting an AWA score of 3 or 3.5.

@Sasirekha You should be ok to get admission with 1100. If you have cleared all the backlogs then you should be fine. Internship adds more value to your application.

I have a query on visa procedure.
Now I have completed M.Tech and I am looking to do MS (biotechnology) in USA. I have 74% in Integrated M.Tech (biotechnology) B.tech (Bioinformatics) 5 yr program. 1280 (560 verbal n 720 maths).Now i have a doubt regarding visa as I think d chances of getting rejected in interview is high due to repeated degree thing (like again MS tht too in biotech). Is that true or just a misconception.
Also i heard from many people r people r not getting visa in biotechnology courses. Is it so?
I m really confused and people r suggesting me to change my branch into bioinformatics but m really not interested in doing tht.
