I Need PhD Admission in Physics Anywhere at Any Cost

Raghuram Sukumar Study in USA 13 Comments

This year, fall 2012, i need admission into Ph.d in Physics somewhere at any cost.

  • IELTS (overall 6.0 speaking 7.0)
  • GRE – generall 960 in 2009
  • GRE-Physics 620 in 2009
  • B.Sc(Hons) Physics 67.18% from university of delhi
  • M.Sc(Physics) 59% from university of delhi
  • one project in biophysics.

Reference letters of DU professors. I have selected some universities but most of them specify minimum IELTS 6.5.

I am also thinking of retaking GRE-General by the end of December to apply to the universities having deadline in February and march.

Please anyone suggest, what to do, though my english is not weak but RC section is really a nightmare for me.

I know students having score of 1100 in gre and academic percentage less than me but they got admission somewhere last year. some of friends are suggesting me to just apply.
Please anyone suggest, i simply can not wait, i need someplace to start my ph.d this year. anyplace, atleast i would start my researh…

PhD in Physics

Your GRE Scores needs to be improved.

PhD degrees are not sold where you can pay premium for your desperate admission. Admission process takes time and planning.

Get good score in Revised GRE and apply for admission. Try to get 320+ in Revised GRE.

You should find several universities with deadlines in March/April.

  1. I know this is off topic, but HSB mentioning the 320+ target has me wondering as to whether my score of 319 (Verbal – 157, Quant – 162) is good enough?

    1. 320 is like …1400/1600 ….so 319 might be something like … 1380 even that’s decent enough ….

and btw ….162 on quant is a bit low I guess. ….

      My score is 322 … with 169+153

      1. Ah well, what’s done is done. All I can do is hope for the best. And try and get good LORs and a fantabulous SOP. 🙂 Thanks for the feedback though, and congrats on your score!

        1. thanks and all the best for the admits …but a doubt …. u said u have enrolled @ iit g .( Phd) and now want a phd from US …. y so ??? isn’t the system @ iitg that great ??

@HSB ….. a small suggestion …. remove the concept of comment moderation. and if possible add a report button ….

This way ….interaction will become easy among the followers and u can even easily identify any ill comments. …

          thank you

          1. If comments is not moderated, there are so many advertisers trying to post their ads especially consulting companies and they don’t want to spend money to advertise.

  2. Hi Manoj,

I believe you understand that whilst doing your PHD you need to write dissertation therefore getting a decent score in IELTS is important also you can get admit in universities around the world in this GRE score however please keep in mind that you need to show concrete research work and you should be a part of ongoing project in the topic you wish to pursue your PHD. With the existing GRE score you have slim chance of getting research assistant ship.
Now since you know the pros and cons of applying with this score, you need to take a call.

  3. The 320 is new 1400 equivalency is not always true. It greatly matters on how your 320 is formed. For example if you have math:170 and verbal:150 that will be 800+450=1250. Again if you have math:164 and verbal:156 that will be 790+550=1340. As far as I understand to assume that you have a previous 1400 score, you must have an verbal score greater or equal to 158 and a math score greater or equal to 160.

  4. If “at any cost” truly means you are willing and able to pay for your education, you can have options. There are many programs that do not provide financial aid that would have higher probability of looking at a potential student with your qualifications than those that offer aid. That changes the landscape because there are far fewer candidates that are willing to invest in their PhD education than those seeking a free education. Look for programs that do not have aid available and you will find schools more willing to consider your application. Of course as mentioned above, you cannot buy a degree and higher GRE scores will open more options for you. Good luck.
