Tri Valley University Raid in Jan 2011 sent caution waves among International students (F1 Visa Students). Several students were affected due to immigration violation raid by FBI.

Now, University of Northern Virginia is facing similar investigation. Students from UNVA have limited time to get transfer to other universities.

It is possible that ICE could have other list of universities under their radar for similar investigations.  Now, we know so many students have been affected, but how to avoid selecting such universities.

Immigration Attorneys at murthy.com have published detailed factors that students should review before selecting a university in USA for higher education.

  1. Prestigious or Reputable Institutions are Generally Safer Bet
  2. Government Must Certify School to Administer F-1 Program
  3. Students Must Look Beyond DHS / ICE Certification
  4. Review School’s Written Materials on WebSite and Other Sources
  5. SEVP Certification and Academic Accreditation are Different
  6. School’s Instructions and Practices Cannot Violate F-1 Rules
  7. Attendance at Physical Location Required
  8. School Must Have Legitimate Application Process for Admission

Schools you select must satisfy all the above 8 factors.

Information provided below are in addition to explanations provided at the source.

Prestigious or Reputable Institutions are Generally Safer Bet

You know by now, TriValley and UNVA doesn’t fit under this category of Prestigious and Reputable universities.

Government Must Certify School to Administer F-1 Program

From what I understand from source article, DHS will visit campus and certify that particular school is allowed to issue I-20.

Complete list of SEVIS Certified Schools

Students Must Look Beyond DHS / ICE Certification

Both TriValley and UNVA was SEVIS certified. So, you have to look beyond SEVIS certification.

Review School’s Written Materials on Web Site and Other Sources

This is very simple and easy way to find the reputation and quality of the schools. Just like how we can evaluate if student has strong English skills by looking at submitted F1 visa experience.

  • Likewise schools website should look legitimate (not like one developed using free templates)
  • Should have .edu TLD address (not .org  or .net)

SEVP Certification and Academic Accreditation are Different

We saw example of importance of accreditation at following blog posts

Remaining 3 options are self-explanatory.

  1. School’s Instructions and Practices Cannot Violate F-1 Rules
  2. Attendance at Physical Location Required
  3. School Must Have Legitimate Application Process for Admission

When you select make sure all 8 factors are met.  Don’t overlook even a tiny bit of information that might put  you in tough situations.

In next blog post, lets look deeper into type of students who get caught up in such universities and what they could have done to stay away from trouble. Till then you can read How to identify accredited Universities?

  1. Hello, I am writing to ask about US News College Compass and related guidebooks. As you may know, US news website is a reputable site to introduce us the best engineering universities. Since I am going to apply for phd program in materials engineering for fall 2012, i need to have this package. I think it can help me to select best university with comparing my scores and the information GPA , GRE , TOEFL , Acceptance Rate, etc. of new entrants in doctoral program in previous academic year. If you have that or any other information, please send them to me.
