F1 VISA Experience at Mumbai Consulate – Bachelors Degree in USA

I had a VISA interview on 11th of may and it was rejected.

Straight to the F1  interview

She was a thin Phillipino(I guess) lady in her twenties.

  • University: University of Texas at Arlington.
  • Course: Bachelors in Computer Science.
  • Status: Rejected. 🙁

I was the first on the counter and so I couldn’t have experiences of others. Here goes my interview.

VO: Hi, Good Morning, Can I have your passport and I-20 please.

ME: Sure. My scholarship is not mentioned in the I-20 but I have a letter. Here you go.

VO: Okay, which university?
Me: University of Texas at Arlington.

VO: Why UTA?
Me: Because it offers a great curriculum and has one of the best Computer Sci Department.

VO: Okay. What was your SAT score?
Me: 1850

VO: What is the maximum score you can get?
Me: 2400

VO: Your percentile here?
Me: Told from my 8th grade to 11th grade.

VO: How many universities you applied to?
Me: 6

VO: How many admits?
Me: 4

VO: Which ones?
Me: UTA and others.

VO: Why do you want to go to USA.(I guess I messed it up here)
Me: Because USA has the best technology and any new technology comes in US markets first. Secondly, it has a flexible education system. Unlike India, you are free to choose whatever course you like.

VO: I am sorry I can’t accept your VISA at this time. Please see this paper for more details on why you were rejected.

That’s it.

What was the reason given in the paper? My guess would be Potential Immigrant 214(b).

Try again based on the reason listed in the paper.

At exactly 6am, a security man came and told UA to line up in a 2 straight line and started checking us with a metal detector and after was directed to a place where two staffs came a lady and a guy then they grouped us into two groups nonimmigrant and immigrant applicants then waited there until 6:30am and again we started the process, checking with a metal detector, some staff checked documents carried and all that gave us a tag and they took us to the main interviewing hall and there lots of counters was there and started verifying documents again until the last queue to the interview standing there, i was occupying number 6 on the queue and the interview started around 7am. Co: okay. have you been to the US or travelled out before?
    Me: No
Co: started typing on the system, for about 180secs. told me to be patient that he’s waiting on the system.
Co: Took a white paper and returned my I-20. with it and told me to go pick up my passport after 3 working days.
It was like a film, then i left for joy

Come on Buddies,he did a great mistake here.
I wondered as if He starts answering, without having listen to question properly.
    She asked”why Us?”
He replied”USa has bla bla bla “.It was totally insanity to be honest.
You should have said “To pursue bachelor in Computer science in xxx university”.

  8. alex on May 17, 2012 at 6:05 PM

When he asked you for your passport and I 20 why the F*&k did you pass your scholarship document ???
Did he ask for one ???
Are you that dumb that you dnt know that you have to be precise and give answers point to point and nothing more or less.

You genuinely deserved to be rejected because of your stupidity and lack of knowledge of US visa interview process.

    • hakona matata on May 18, 2012 at 5:00 PM

This is so rude. There’s nothing wrong with her offering more information and this shouldn’t be the reason she was rejected and probably isn’t.

    • Abhinav Mahajan on June 15, 2012 at 1:47 PM

      I agree with alex!
He has faced the interview like he is standing and giving some information to some bank officials answers are too basic with no precisibility to questions.

your gpa, backlogs, and financial ability could’ve played a decisive role here – who knows? but i believe your body language is the culprit. you failed to hide the excitement to go to modern el dorado and, instead, exhibited deep hatred ( remember your intonation? ) towards india when you uttered – unlike india…..bla bla bla.

and always remember, this age group ie 18 – 26, they consider this as being most dangerous ( you’ll find this pool into middle 80% of the bell curve of their risk assessment ).

now – may i ask you why the hurry? i agree, we’re a pygmy when it comes to masters and research, but at ug level we still have a lot of good govt colleges like nit and private ones like vit.

    • Priya on May 17, 2012 at 7:32 PM

I am agree .while facing visa interview most importent thing to hide is your exitement to visit USA. While answering questions dont provide extra information, just answer the question .

      • Abhinav Mahajan on June 15, 2012 at 1:44 PM

Yes priya I agree with you, his answers seems to be very overexcited, when she asked for only pasport and I 20 , he should not provide extra documents, secondly his answers are not that much precise of the questions like why usa n why this univ, so rejection is expected in such cases. Anyways good luck for future!
