F1 Visa experience rejected for University of Northern Virginia.

Hello Sir,

My visa got rejected in Kolkata embassy on 6th bcoz of lack of dates in Hyderabad I went to Kolkata. My interview was scheduled at 9.45am but my interview was taken at 12.45pm

F1 Experience

My interview went like this.

Why do u want to go to university of northern virginia?
Bcoz of the course structure it is having, it has a major in pharmaceutical distribution and management in which I am very much interested in and also I want to set up a business in INDIA after finishing my masters and also the no. of international students in the university is more which gives me a global exposure and prepares me for the global competition.

You have so many universities offering this course then why particularly this university?

yes sir many universities are offering but i have to consider the fee also this university is economical so thats why i want to go with this university.

How many schools u have applied for?Only this university sir .

Why only one while u have so many schools accepting gre ,gmat why this university which is accepting toefl?
bcoz this university is satisfying all my requirements and also i am very much interested in this university thats why.
so he gave 214(b) and said cant issue visa.

UnivNoVa is a joke school…the place where the only admission requirements is that one’s tuition check cleared the bank! Far too many ‘international students’ applied to this school just so they could go find work in a 7-11, a gas station, a motel or a doughnut store….

    Hi guys,

I understand that everyone wants to get to US and get an access to a better life but at what cost? i am not talking about just money, the cost of time, money and energy. Is it really worth going to a private non-accredited university, bear in your mind that you will also need to work after studying, and you do not want to get stuck with a consultant job because then you face problems with the H1B and finding a stable employer.

Many of the students just get scared of GRE or GMAT and opt for lower quality schools and somehow students think that toefl is some kinda cool test, but its not, its just a test of your english and not your overall capability whereas GRE and GMAT are.

My advice, Apply to state universities, the benfits associated are a potential scholarship, graduate assistantship, in-state tuition.

weigh the pros and cons and choose your option. Do your own research, agents can help but only to a certain level, they have to protect their interest too if you know what i mean.

  8. krish on July 28, 2011 at 10:38 AM

UNVA is just a fraud university just for business. Don’t dream about education in UNVA. It’s non-accredited and unknown even the city it is in. You will get admission easily however when you will find bad about it and want to transfer you will not get it easily. Even you will not get credit for the course you had completed on any other university in usa. So, don’t worry you did no get visa, you saved your money. Next time find some high profile university , you will definetly get it.

  9. sundaramoorthy on April 15, 2011 at 12:24 AM

I cant understand why this visa was rejected. Can you please shed some details on 214(b).

    • Adam on July 29, 2011 at 8:36 AM

      Notice the sentences
      1) ” I want to set up a business in INDIA “.(which is not a valid proof/reason for returning back to India)
      2) ” satisfying all my requirements “. ( Without GRE ? and no other universally recognizable achievement made to substitute GRE scores, eg: presentations in journals etc. )
This is why he/she could have got rejected under 214(b).

  10. Anubandh on February 20, 2011 at 10:41 AM

i think because he selected only one university, and the VO also asked that why only this university which accepts TOEFL and why not others who accept GRE and GMAT because he thought that the applicant is trying to escape the competitive path and this is a prime factor for him choosing this university than the other important factors. at least this is the best i can figure out from the question and answers above

  11. imran satti on February 20, 2011 at 5:33 AM

no not at all your visa is rejucted due to the money discription it is big mistake 2nd u must apply more than two universities

i am not agreed some comments posted by someone els…….. that this university is not accreditation it is not true pls improve you knowledge it is certified by state council of higher education for virginia and american university accredation council (AUAC) and it is authorized by US Govt. to enroll non-immigration alien students so be prepared before going 2nd time

  12. girish babu on February 20, 2011 at 3:22 AM

u shouldnt have mentioned about the low fees of thr univ dude…and your answers were not so great to impress the VO,better luck next time…and be prepared this time

  13. krishna on February 19, 2011 at 11:09 PM

i can understand an ambiguity in Ur answer .first u answered u will get global exposure, interest in pharma in that univ, again u answered fee structure .u should stick to ur point, this is the reason VO asked same question twice.to check ur confidence.

In 2nd question: U gone very bad by talking on MONEY
Dude i think u are going for masters and u r compromising with
    u r studies
In 3rd most wrong attempt: Here i think u should have applied for more than 1 university .

Hey, I know some people that have been issued to that school.First of all the main problem is that you did not give a clear reason why you want to attend that school, you have to spell it out to the vo,If you are going there because it satisfies your requirements they want to know what those requirements are,be specific. However the said University is not accredited, so if the vo knows about that already I dont think he will issue a visa.Be more prepared with your answers next,be specific and justify why you dont have gmat/gre or better still get an 1-20 from a more accredited school.Goodluck.

  18. Gayathri on February 19, 2011 at 8:14 AM

Hi..Recently I attended a univ fair in which I got to meet reps from American consulate. The representative told me when they feel the univ does not take much effort in shortlisting the right candidates then they reject the visa.If we go by what you mentioned then they might have felt that a university which gives admits based on TOEFL along does not have a rigorous selection process and hence the reject.

  19. Samson A. on February 19, 2011 at 7:21 AM

Thanks for sharing your interview experience. As I read on ur interview, u helped the Visa Officer made easiest of decisions. Why? Coz u should never put fee as a reason to choose any university, that's a clear F1 visa denial based on "z damn" 214(b) rule. You were right to pick the university due to its cheap tuition and fee structure but shouldn't be revealed to VO. You could say their research experiences suits ur area of interest, the weather similar to where u're living in and easy to adapt……u name it. Applying only to one university may lead the VO to think u can't afford pay application fee, so will tuition and other expenses in the US, which means u're intending to migrate not to study then get back to ur home country. EASY, right? For the VO. Never ever mention cost, fee, tuition……. money should not be an issue.

Hope you took ur lessen and wish u best of lucks on ur next try!!!

Agreed! 😀 Completely right! But i feel sad for him 🙁

      • vins on February 21, 2011 at 8:13 PM

Even i think Northern virginia has not high visa rating.

        its famous for CPT program.

  20. Rajmohan on February 19, 2011 at 7:18 AM

    Hello bro,
Rather than mentioning about the fee you could have mentioned about the positive aspects of the univ.obviously your reply would have made him to question your financial stability.because once if you have decided to go to USA it is the quality of education you should worry about and not the fee.if you are a meritorious student you will be eligible for scholarships and you could get a bank loan with ease.Good luck bro.

  21. Kushal Prajapati on February 19, 2011 at 6:26 AM

First of all the major factor that declined your chances was that you applied to only one university. Strong indication that either you want to go to any particular region or to the university which you think will be 100% admitting you.
That university gave admission only with TOEFL score further confirmed it.
Also in your answer to first question, you said about your return to India and all which clearly reflected your unnecessary attempts to convince VO that you are going to return.
Lastly in your second question you made blunder by stating economical reasons for applying to that university.
You need to make your profile strong and more convincing and also work more on interview part.
    Best of Luck!

  22. Apoorv on February 19, 2011 at 5:07 AM

Though I have yet to appear for my visa but from what I have read and learned VO don't have much authority to deny/accept your visa request now (mostly June 2010 onwards). He can at most convert your approved visa to pink slip and vice versa. Even before one go for the interview it's decided which student would get visa or not which is recommended by your university.
But even if one neglects this and takes it as crap (which I would not recommend) but you mentioned that you want to setup business in India and VO would give a thought if he wants to run a business in future, he might set it up in US which makes a potential immigrant (listed under 214(b)).
Dude give a serious thought before appearing before VO. Talk to as many people as you and read about it as much as you can. If not then don't hesitate to spend some bucks on Visa Counselor (available for about Rs. 5k); which ain't that much of a deal given your future on the other balance scale.

  23. Harry on February 19, 2011 at 4:55 AM

Well, i am sorry to say all your answers were very lame and did not make sense, you certainly did not do your homework, HSB is a great resource and it would be great if you could spend a day or two of your time on it before you arrange for a second appointment so that you know what and how to say at the day of the interview.. good luck 🙂

  24. Rohan on February 19, 2011 at 3:48 AM

This was quiet expected. University of Northern Virginia is an unaccredited and a cheap school. No accrediting body that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education has awarded accreditation to this university. Its accreditation was revoked by ACICS (Thats a Shame !). Apart from this it was explicit that you were going to work in the U.S since UNVA is popular for online learning management system, online library etc. Interaction with professors & students are mostly online. Most of the Indians over there get jobs in consultancy firms. The scenario of jobs is not that bright. These were my 2 cents, correct me if I am wrong ??

    • shrenik on February 20, 2011 at 12:39 AM

kindly can any one send me the links or share with us the place where we can find the accreditation for the universities
