What is Foreign Degree Evaluation?

I was trying to inquire with couple of universities and learnt a new word “Foreign Degree Evaluation”. I’m just not sure what that means, What process is involved for that? Could you help me know about that on how that is done and what are the requirements. – Raj

Foreign Degree Evaluation

  • Some Universities require Foreign degrees to be evaluated before your application will be processed.
  • Evaluation requirements should be listed in Admission requirements page.
  • Schools will list the companies that can be used to get foreign degree evaluation

The evaluation should indicate the equivalent U.S. degree and major area.

Foreign Degree Evaluation – Companies

There are several companies that do degree evaluation of Indian degrees when applying for US Universities. To name a few

  • WES
  • Educational Credential Evaluators
  • Josef Silny & Associates, Inc.
  • Education International, Inc.

Why Credential Evaluation?

Lets say you have completed your degree/education outside US. Universities you apply might not even heard about your school/university. How would they evaluate your application, if they don’t know the value of the degree. Thats when, you must have your credentials evaluated in order to have them understood and recognized.

What if you print your mark sheets and degree certificates?  Such problems can be solved by transcripts evaluation. Some students have asked quetions about impact of submitting fake degree certificates and this happens from application received from India.

If universities receive fake certificates frequently, then they would want all applicants transcripts to be evaluated.

How Transcripts will be evaluated?

You have to submit required documents (mark sheets, degree, transcripts,..). Company, might contact your university that issued the transcripts, to  obtain the necessary information or to have it verified.

If you have gone through the process of credentials evaluation, can you share your experience?

This article raises some very good points. Basically if you know that you want to complete a degree program abroad, then plan everything out years ahead of time and target the institutions that you want to attend in another country.

Some schools lack accreditation, certain programs are not recognized, and etc. Degree programs are not created equally around the world. You really have to check these things out far in advance and make arrangements ahead of time.

Top universities not only look at your academics but your extra curricular, because good academics are default for the applicants to those universities. I suggest you go to collegeconfidential.com to get more knowledge about universities in the USA.
