  4. GRE Score is Canceled Due to Incorrect Surname in the Passport and Test Registration

Question:  My GRE Test score was canceled with security hold on the account. What options do I have? And when I called the ETS, they gave the following response, “GRE score was canceled score since your last name used during the registration does not match the passport.”

I engaged with this person about why different surname was used during registration for the GRE Test.

Reader: My last name is ALXXX. I registered for the GRE with XXX, since all my transcripts carry that name. In my country, “AL” is not necessary, it can be deleted from the surname. I know it is a mistake. I showed the GRE Test center a supplementary ID (a student and a state ID). They admitted me to take the test. But, later, my score was canceled.

Lessons Learned:

  • Mistake 1 – Registering for GRE with incorrect last name.
  • Mistake 2 – Test center allowing you to take the exam when named used to register for GRE is different from Passport. They should have stopped you from appearing from the test.

I think, what ETS did was right. It would them some time to review the test scores and name on your passport. It’s is clearly stated in GRE registration website about required documents. Also, the exact name in passport should be used to register for GRE.

Please make sure that the name used at the registration matches the name on the passport.
