Alert: Take GRE Now (in Current Pattern)

Raghuram Sukumar GRE 67 Comments

ETS will offer only Revised GRE format starting Aug 1, 2011. One of frequently asked questions among in last few weeks have similar tone – “When should I take GRE Exam? Should I wait and register for Revised GRE?”

Take GRE Now

My advise goes like this – If you plan to apply for Graduate School in USA within next 5 years, take GRE in current pattern.

You could be in first, second or third year of bachelors degree, but try to take GRE before new pattern comes into effect.

You will always have an option to take GRE in new pattern, but if you miss this opportunity, its gone forever.

After you read this, you might have following questions

I’m in second year and have no clue about GRE, do you think, I have sufficient time to prepare to register for GRE in current pattern?

My answer is the same as above. I don’t care if you are scared and fear GRE test. Change your mindset and take your GRE NOW!

I get more energy while trying to reach unrealistic goals. It bring the best in me. Take up this opportunity as a challenge and push yourself to test your limits.

Comments?

After reading this post, if you have decided to take the GRE in current pattern, do let me know. If you think revised GRE is better than current pattern, I would like to know the reasons too.

Update : In next post, I will blog about cons of revised GRE pattern.

Comments

  1. is the gre pattern going to change from 2013 ??plz tell me ….if the pattern will going to change plz tell me whether a new pattern is easy or hard as compare to present patern of gre?

  2. i would definitely say the new GRE is a lil tougher on the verbal side but is a much better testing experience. it requires work for those who don’t have a good vocab, the days of mugging word lists and cracking verbal (antonyms and analogies) are over for sure. The new GRE tests undersanding of words rather than retentivity and i like that…i have already taken my GRE (revised) and i loved it and managed to do pretty well though i didn’t really slog, but its imp to keep practicing sentence completion and RC…majortests is a good site to work with…ets website provides all the info u need abt new GRE…hope this helps… 🙂

  3. I took GRE of current and got 1030 (260 in verbal)
is there any chance to get better score in revised GRE.I have another doubt if i got low score in revised gre which will be considered

  4. I am an indian. My strong points are reading comprehension and fill ups.
I always score full in them and do 50% correct in anthologies and antonymous.
Even though I am fully prepared for current format but I will like to give in revised format because I think I can score better in that. Plus as so many students are giving current format gre ……..its getting very tough to achieve high scores in old pattern

  5. Thanks for your openness and frankness. I have been postponing the GRE mainly because of fear and the fact that I really don’t have time to prepare for them. I am finishing up a Master’s that I was able to opt-out of the GRE because of another standardized test score I had on record. If I want to go on for a DrPH I will need the GRE at some point. I’ve been going back and forth about taking the current test with little preparation or waiting to take the revised test since I won’t need my scores till next year. The only thing is I agree with you–once the old test is gone, its gone and I am sure the new test is must more difficult and my time is becoming more and more limited soooo…I think I am going to register for the current test…I only have 2 months to prep tho is that really enough time???? :o/

  6. "Ya its better to take GRE in the current pattern because in the revised pattern english is going to be even more harder than in current pattern"

I would recommend most people here to work on their English! I understand English might might be your second language, but wow! Try using English spell check — if you can't post to a blog with correct English how can you pass the "more harder" new test pattern.

For me, I'm going to take the new test, time just isn't on my side for taking the old one – and believe me, I'm going to study the areas I'm weak at, just as you should. Think positive and prepare, do your best — but please stop butchering the English language. BTW, I live in a Spanish speaking country and have a hard time with that language, but I'd never, ever bastardize their written language without using all resources available, don't be sloppy, look it up! good luck to us all.

  7. Are the GRE dates available for current pattern, now? I have name problem in my passport so I decided to rectify that then apply for gre exam..

  8. hi HSB,

Iam little confused about taking the current test. Iam gud with doing RC's rather than analogies. while practising, i have seen that for RC's i'll hardly get 1 or 2 questions wrong……but with analogies, usually 50% iam wrong. Wat iam saying is that iam gud with the logical reasoning, but poor in cramming things.

Please suggest wat should i do……..

  9. shal i take gre exam now or revised pattern im studing my btech third year

  10. why i should give gre in current patten.i have not prepare for it is that enough time to preparation??send ans me on my e-mail

  11. i am 3rd year student in information technology.i just started to prepare for gre exam.which is better taking present gre or revised gre and the reasons, because i am bit confused.and the fees required in gre .will the questions be tougher in quant and verbal in revised gre as compared to current gre pattern.please advice me.

  12. Hi…

recently i completed my Bsc & i planned for GRE since 1 year..

I studied by Barrons Study Material but i didnt give GRE test yet just beacause lack o f good question which is preparable.

    Thanks

  13. Hey HSB, I seem to agree with your views but i still have
some doubts in mind. I have heard that new format of GRE is going
to be comparitively tough for Asian students. I have been preparing
as per the old format. What changes should i make in my preparation
strategy for new format. Suppose If i decide to stick to old format
and have to give it before 1 August ,2011. by what time should i
complete the registration. Also do you think 4 months will be
enough for the preparation( I am in 3rd year and have to apply by
the end of this year) ?? I am from IIT-Kanpur and academics is
pretty hectic and tough here.So it can get only 1-2 hours at max
    per day

  14. During admission, marks scored a/c to new pattern and old pattern have the same value or will they be considered seperately considering the change in the pattern.

  15. hey guys wanted to ask ,will i be able to take the current gre test in july 2011 ?

  16. hey guys any clue as to whether i will be able to take the current test in july 2011 ?

  17. EVEN THOUGH BOOKS ARE COMING OUT RIGHT NOW, NO ONE KNOWS THE EXACT DIFFICULTY OF QUESTIONS OTHER THAN ETS, NOT EVEN PUBLISHERS. SO THINK ABOUT IT…

SIMPLE ANALOGY: SAMPLE QUESTIONS FOR CURRENT GRE ON ETS SITE ARE EASIER THAN WHAT YOU REALLY END UP GETTING. SO THERE YOU GO…

  18. To all people here:

    1) ANY GRE IS VALID FOR FIVE YEARS.

    2) ASK ETS. NEW AND OLD GRE WILL BE WEIGHED EQUALLY TILL THE OLD SCORES ARE VALID . THEY HAVE COMPARISONS READY.

    3) THE ONLY REASON I WOULD PREFER THE NEW GRE, IS BECAUSE, SINCE GRE IS A CONFIDENTIAL EXAM, IT WOULD TAKE MANY TRIALS FOR PEOPLE AT KAPLAN , BARRON TO COME UP WITH THEIR EDITIONS OF BOOKS. COMMON SENSE… IF YOU HAVE TO APPLY FOR 2012, YOU HAVE AN OPTION TO TAKE CURRENT GRE. OTHERS , IT IS YOUR WISH. THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE WILL BE IN THE VARIETY AND AMOUNT OF PREPARATION MATERIAL AVAILABLE.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY ALL OF YOU ARE FIGHTING ON EASY VS HARD !

    PERIOD.

  19. Hello sir,

I am Hemanth. Doing my final yera engineering.

I want to know whether GRE exam will be conducted in JANUARY?

    Thank You.

  20. I agree that its better that we take our exams now ,but what about applying for universities

I am in third year and if i apply now my application would be waste as they wont keep it long enough as i have to join after 2 yrs….

    1. @Yogesh Bahal : Dear dont you know that GRE scores are valid upto 5 years which means you can apply for US university after finishing your Btech or Eng. etc…… so give it out now, dont worry u can give it again,so it wud be a good experience for u in both the cases .

  21. hi,
I ve taken my GRE in JUne2010 , got 1090 wid a horribke score in verbal, den took TOEFL and got 99 now I am in confusion that whether I shd take d GRE again if yes den how to improve my Verbal.
I already gone through the wordlists but my problem is RC , so plz give me sum lightabt the preparation.

  22. Hi hsb and all the fans,
After reading this blog i have booked my gre dates this december even though i was planning to take it by august'11, as i would have graduated by may'11. Presently am in 7th sem and will be sitting for my sem exams in november. So i have pretty less time to prepare for it and i am in a fix. I have a good ogpa of above 9.0 till now and i also have scholarships from the govt of india for my academic performance. I am good at quants and moderate in verbal. Can you please suggest some quick verbal learning strategies like will it do if i just mug up the high frequency words in barrons?? Need some guidance asap!!! Your suggestions will be of great importance to me.
    Thanks.

    1. Hai. Wat all you need to do is just keep things simple. Barron?????? 17th edition??? Its good. but dont reply compleetely on barron. coz in gre there isnt any syllubus. Thr r 1000's of words given in exams which are not all present in barrons 3500 word list. Just keep working wid ewat ever material u have. work for 2 hrs a day wid words. Not more than that. try to recall wat u have done early in the mornig. MAke use of q cards when ever possible. That will fetch u good verbal score

  23. One more point i would like to make is. while preparing verbal take more time. prepare for 2 hours a day for 2 months. it will help u to remember words more easily n review. So book a slt and go. More than coaching, own preperation is much imporatnt,

  24. Hai friends, according to my knowledge new format of gre does not have any antonymns and synonymns.

Instead it will have more reading comprehensions

It will make the exam difficult for a group of people who does not have good reading abilities. But if u are planning to u.s in next 2 to 3 years. better go for gre rt away. dont delay in it.

  25. new format gre is just a different format not a new level of difficulty. Also remember that if at all it is more difficult then you can be assured that the college admissions commitee will give the newer format more weightage. Its common sense. You and I would do the same.

However, the newer format does test the abilities of the student in a different way and it provides more new info to the college admissions commitee about the abilities of the student so they can decide if they will do well in the course. Obviously then they will prefer newer format scores.

However, this does not mean that you can prepare for the old gre and score well in the new gre. Obviously if you want to give the new format, you should prepare for the new format, and this will give you more time also. Books and course materials for the new format have already started coming out.

  26. people who are not in 3rd year, it does NOT make sense to take current gre. Obviously a college admission commitee will give greater weightage to a gre score of the new format, than the same gre score of a format which was done away with more than a year ago. Its common sense, and if you or I were in their position we would do the same thing. Would you prefer a student who has passed from your college with the new syllabus or with an older syllabus which was done away with more than a year ago?

If you give the gre in current format just for the heck of it even though you are not going to apply by next year and get a bad score, it will remain in your scorecard for 5 years. Giving it again in the new format will not remove the bad score.

Let me explain something about percentiles in your GRE scorecard.

If everyone rushes like a herd of sheep to give the current gre even if they are not applying by next year, then there will be a mad rush, and there is a higher chance that you and those who ARE applying by next year, will get a lower percentile in your scorecard. So everyone loses.

Because of this lower percentile, some may not get in that year and will apply again with you. This means that you will face more competition next year.

Advice on this site seems to be only for the benefit of ETS since only they can benefit from this site's advice.

Do not rush like a herd of mad sheep only by this site's advice. Rushing like this is only seen in the stock markets, when everyone rushes to sell their shares based on some advice, and that is when everyone loses.

    1. What experience do you have with college admission committee and how they use new vs old gre score? Have you spoken to any admission committee members recently? can you provide some transcripts of chat if you have one or contact?

      1. Hello.

Earth to HSB. Please wake up.

There are no new gre scores as yet, because the new gre has not started yet.

Admissions commitee will decide such things only before the November when they are going to accept such scores, i.e. November 2011.

Again, look at the questions you are asking me. These informations regarding admission decisions are not disclosed publicly by the college or any professors. If they do decide to give a weightage, they will do so without informing anyone (especially because if they do announce the weightage, nobody will want to give the old format anymore and ETS will lose out, or go bankrupt).

Do you expect IIMs in India to give out the weightages they give to things like CAT score, Group Discussion, and interview during their admissions decision? Not likely, except maybe with an RTI application. But many US univeristis are private bodies. So the US universities admissions commitee will obviously not tell me any such thing nor provide written emails about it.

Your questions to me show that you may not be as experienced as you claim to be or are just irritated with my comments about your advice. Everyone knows the answers to your questions will be NO, because such things are not revealed by the admissions commitees. Yet you ask these questions just for rhetoric. Both your questions and my answer are just a waste of SPACE. cyber – SPACE

        1. Dude – Thats the difference between you and I. You said admission committee will give more importance to new GRE Score. Now you are saying opposite of that.

new format gre is just a different format not a new level of difficulty. Also remember that if at all it is more difficult then you can be assured that the college admissions commitee will give the newer format more weightage. Its common sense. You and I would do the same.

FYI – my network is very wide and it reaches Dean of Grad schools, International Office advisers and professors who actually review and accept students + member of Higher Ed organizations.

          1. OK, I'll try to explain more clearly this time for your benefit.

            Upto August 2012 (admissions)
If overall difficulty of new gre VS old gre is the same = NO weightage uptil April 2012

            After August 2012 (admissions)
If overall difficulty of new gre VS old gre is the same = Weightage MAY be given, snce majority applicants will be giving New GRE scores, and the old format has become obsolete for more than 1 year, but this depends on the decision taken by individual admissions committees of different colleges. This decision will not be conveyed to ETS or to the applicants, nor will require approval from anyone outside the individual private college's admissons committee. This decision is a private admissions decision and will not be conveyed to anyone, just like all the other methods of weighing factors in your complete application profile.

            upto August 2012 and after
If overall difficulty of new gre is MORE than old gre = Weightage may be given, but again this depends on the decision taken by individual admissions committees of different colleges. This decision will not be conveyed to ETS or to the applicants, nor will require approval from anyone outside the individual private college's admissons committee. This decision is a private admissions decision and will not be conveyed to anyone, just like all the other methods of weighing factors in your complete application profile.

A similar example would be the GRE subject test for computer science in a school which does not require it, but recommends that you take it.
            ASSUMING OTHER THINGS ARE EQUAL….
If one application has only a good General gre score and another application has a good General gre score, AND a good cs subject GRE score, the college will give admission to the second application who has got a good subject gre score also.
Even though it is not required, it provides more information regarding the applicant's ablities to perform well in the CS course they have applied for and so the admissions committee can make a more educated and safe decision in admitting the second applicant. However, they won't tell you this.

Similarly, AFTER Augst 2012, if you were to tell the admissions committee that you were going to apply in November 2012 or later and you already gave the gre in old format in August 2011, and you asked them whether you should give it in the new format instead.
They will reply that since the format has changed more than a year ago, and they have started receiving new format gre scores since November 2012, they would RECOMMEND you provide a new format score, however, they will also accept old format scores.

No one is going to tell you to your face (phone) that "We will give you less weightage unless you shell out some cash and give the test again, Cheapo."

          2. Whoops!!!! ButterFingers……. made the typo again

here is the corrected 2 paragraphs

Similarly, AFTER Augst 2012, if you were to tell the admissions committee that you were going to apply in November 2012 or later and you already gave the gre in old format in August 2011, and you asked them whether you should give it in the new format instead.

They will reply that since the format has changed more than a year ago, and they have started receiving new format gre scores since November 2011, they would RECOMMEND you provide a new format score, however, they will also accept old format scores.

No one is going to tell you to your face (phone) that “We will give you less weightage unless you shell out some cash and give the test again, Cheapo.”

          3. It does not at any point seem that Pankaj contradicted himself. In fact he reiterated that schools will not disclose which format will take preference. Because if they do, ETS stands to lose.

  27. I dont know wats making you guys think of gre exam so much. It might be a difficult exam. But its nt much difficult than what v had in past. when u compare with thoise night outs, big heavy books for 4 years through out our graduation gre is nothing. Wat ever may be the pattern just book a slot and go for it I Prepared myself when i wrote gre. i got 1160. Just book a slot and make it fast. cooooooooooollllllllll

  28. Hi,

Am a master student from the US and i know certain things about GRE exam and all cuz i ve taken it not too long ago. So i would tend to concur with HSB on this post. I think it would be a best bet by anyone who is planning to take GRE in the near future to take the old pattern and not gor for the revised pattern. Atleast not until some one else has taken it and you can kind of know how it is from a person who has taken it rather than from what ETS advertises. Also I think it would take atleast 6 months to a year for all to fully comprehend the new change and prep material comes out in the correct way for the new pattern. Until then one does not have the correct idea about the changes and taking it would be something like stepping in the dark. And you never know how tought the new pattern is gonna be. So i think taking the old pattern would be the best bet. And am not sure when would probably the last date to take the old pattern but i don't think the old test would be administered after the new pattern has been introduced. So those who are planning to take it i think u must plan to take it before July- August 2011.

  29. hey i asked this question before too, but couldn't get the answer.. im taking gre in october. when should i take my toefl then? as soon as possible. i haven't prepared for toefl but i am sure i will b able to. so please let me know, whatll b the best time for it?

    1. Hey i took gre! and got score of 1130.. im still in a dilemma..should i take it again coz i noe i can improve my scores by a wide range or i shud take toefl?please help!

  30. when would be the last date for taking current GRE? I mean, if I want to take this current format GRE when should I register?

  31. You have no support for your answer though your point is valid as this will be the only opportunity left to give the GRE in current format. I am already registered to give GRE on 21st of September.

  32. hello HSB

i m in 3rd yr of engg. right now & want to give GRE in the fall of 2012 (~may 2012). so i have ~20 months for its preparation.

i m not good in english but having good mathematics skill, so i think i must start preparing for GRE right from now.

Please ! suggest me, at least how much time in a week i should give for its preparation..

    1. I see it like this: the more you practice, the more you know. I think you should improve your English skill too if you want a good score…. and ask yourself: do you really need to go to US? Believe me, smart guys have good salaries wherever they are.
By the way you should check "www.youtube.com/jenniferesl" account. You will find it interesting as long as you want to learn English.
      happy studies!

  33. Hello HSB

Please give reasons for saying that it's better to take GRE in the current pattern…

Will the new pattern be more difficult than the current one?

    1. hey HSB!!!

i wanna know why is this so important to give GRE test in the current pattern?

i am in the 3year of my engg.studies and planning to give GRE in 2012 and i think that would be the best oppertunity for me in scoring good in GRE because by this methodolgy i could have a lot of time for its preparations… please advice me that weather i am doing the right thing or i should adopt an alternate path?

  34. Hey Raghu,

Well. . . After reading this post,I think I must start preparing for GRE right from now. Well. . . . I'm just thinking if it cud be a problem in any way cuz I am going to the US only after a couple of years cuz I'm doing my second year right now. Kindly let me know what you think. And. . . Other readers also please open up your comments.

    Thanks

    Rajkamal

  35. hey HSB,

I'll be taking GRE in Dec '10.

since GRE score is valid upto 2yrs, will the old GRE pattern score be given same weightage as now..suppose if i want to apply for fall 2012….will universities ask me to take revised GRE exam?

    1. gre score is valid upto 5 years. ETS is not biased towards any format. So the universities should not ask for taking up test again.

      1. I want to clarify this point. ETS is not biased towards any format. HOWEVER, the universities admissions commitee WILL give more weightage to a new format. It really doesn't matter what ETS thinks on your score because they are not going to decide on your admissions, but the universities are.

They will not ask you to give the GRE again but you may lose out admissions and scholarships to those have given in the newer format.

See my comment given on 15th September.

Don't be fickle minded and change your plans based on advice from this site and advice from other people. Different people will see things differently. If you have already made a plan, then stick to it and you will end up getting better results no matter what the format.

  36. If I want to give GRE in current pattern in 1st/ 2nd week of July 2011, when do I have to register?

      1. @ Anindya and Hitesh:

It is always better to register 30 or 45 days before the intended date of examination as it gives you a good enough buffer for your preparation and also intended dates will be available in your locality. If you however want to cancel, postpone or prepone your testing appointment, do so 3 days before the appointment. If you guys feel that you need to postpone your appointment have a constant check over the available dates through your GRE account as some dates which were not available earlier would be available due to last minute cancellation by others. This usually happens a week or so before the appointment.

        1. @ Bharat:

Thank you for your reply. What I am really concerned about is, there will be a rush to give GRE in current pattern in July, 2011. So it can be possible that I may not get my preferred date. So I would like to register as soon as possible. Can someone please tell me when will the registration process start for dates in July 2011?

          1. thank you for your reply. but i want to ask that when can we register for GRE in MAY, JUNE, JULY 2011. because presently no dates are shown on gre website for these months, infact no dates are shown for any month in 2011 as per old pattern. can you plz tell me the reason….??

          2. As far as I know the registration for the July 2011 can be made atleast 3 months prior to the intended date, please do verify once.

  37. Hello guys,

I am currently in my second year of my B.tech course.

Initially my plan was to first concentrate on studies and try to make my score at college better in 2nd and 3rd year and then after passing my 3rd year i would have approx. 3 months vacations and also in my 4th and final year i would have more time to prepare for GRE as i would be having less classes and so,more time and concentration for it. So,by this way i would have improved my college scores first and then in final year 4-5 months just for GRE. It was a pretty good plan and i was pretty confident and determined of scoring good at GRE.

But now the pattern has changed and everyone including HSB is advising to take the test NOW. First of all it's REALLY hard to find time to prepare for GRE when you have college and you have to maintain a decent score and attendance too. With the GRE pattern my whole plan has also changed and the test itself is not cheap,i wanted to give my best shot in my first attempt. Apart from all of this i am not that confident about taking the test in recent pattern soon. I will be applying to U.S universities after 3 years, and people will have to take the test in new pattern after august 2011 and universities will have to admit students based on the scores of test on new pattern.

so why not take the test in new pattern when you have a lot of time and you can concentrate fully?

The thing is if i take the GRE in current format i would have only 2 months time, will that be enough??? or if i take the test with changed pattern i will have 6 months to prepare.which one is better?

    1. focus on your gpa. That will remain with you forever, and you cannot change it.

if US does not work out, your gre will be useless but your gpa will still be looked at in whichever contry you will stay in.

Do NOT be fickle minded and change your plans because of the advice from some people or you will not make progress on any side.

You made a plan, stick with it, and you will get better results than if you keep changing your mind based on a few people's advice like in the stock market.

  38. Hi,

i just came in my 3rd year of engineering and i gave my gre 2 months ago. The current format is best suited as there are a lot of scoring options.

People face trouble doing the vocab part, but eventually it is also a necessary component in new gre format as good vocab is necessary for not just antonyms but the verbal section in general.

Also, most people (including me) faces problem in RC and i read that it would be tougher in the new format. So guys go for the old format…

  39. alrite … the current GRE is much better … but my question is when am applying in 2013 will any of the US universities be specific abt the revised GRE scores ????

  40. Ya its better to take GRE in the current pattern because in the revised pattern english is going to be even more harder than in current pattern.Ofcourse the revised GRE made math section much easier but for indians, making english harder is not a good sign so its better to take GRE in current pattern than in revised pattern.
