Keep a private blog or notebook

This is a really helpful tip if you are somewhat forgetful like me.

Not only does it allow you to remind yourself what you need to do in the future, it also allows you to look back at what you’ve done and celebrate your accomplishments.

If you haven’t had any big accomplishments lately, this allows you to look at what you’ve done and see how you can fix it so it works better in the future.

Either way, you’ll be able to reflect on what you’ve done in the past and improve on it.

Tell everyone about it

If you tell everyone your goals for this coming year or even just a coming project, they will hold you to it.

You won’t want to let them down lest you be called a quitter or a chicken. Shame is a much bigger motivator than it seems, because no one wants to feel ashamed of themselves.

A good calendar

Sort of going hand-in-hand with the notebook, using a calendar makes sure you use your time wisely and remember the appointments that you make.

This is more important than a to-do list because rather than just sandwiching all of your tasks together, it makes you think through the logistics of scheduling all of your events and having to face them, whether they be going to the gym, completing a certain project, or even just cooking more.

An Alarm Clock

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

Rising early allows you to get the day started and get on your way. Arriving just 15 minutes early to work gives you 15 rather uninterrupted minutes to do small tasks like check email or just clean up your desk.

It also gives you some time to reflect on the coming workday and what all you have to do.

The Harvard Business Review went one step further than this and proposed framing your goals not in statement form, but rather as a question.

So rather than saying “I never have time to do stuff“, ask yourself “How can I be more efficient with my time?

Now, rather than blaming something else, you turn the blame back on yourself, because you’re the only one who has control over how you use your time.

Also, a lot of times as you ask yourself these questions, you find that you are able to answer them insightfully.

This in turn leads to you being able to solve the problem because you’ve known the solution all along, you just didn’t want to face it.

By using these tools and asking ourselves the hard questions, we are able to rise above the obstacles that hold us back and achieve our goals.

If your goals don’t pan out, don’t worry!

Just see what’s keeping them from happening or form some new ones and keep working towards them.

  1. In other words, get a smartphone – after all smartphones these days come equipped with apps for alarm clock, calendar and to-do-lists. In fact, if you used an app like ‘Astrid’, you could also tell it your goals and it’ll keep reminding you to go do that. 😛

    1. Well, this is a blog and not a journal. As long as it is able to convey its message or crux of the topic till then its good. Isn’t?

  3. I totally agree with HSB. These tools are indeed essential to keep track of everything.
    I use a notebook and maintain a calendar.It helps me to pinpoint what I had planned and how much am I sticking with it,and what can I do to improve upon it. I sometimes do set an alarm. However I will have to soon start the “tell everyone about it” part 🙂

  4. Well, this is good. Everyday I think to wake up early even though I go to bed at 2 in the morning. Something what I think is, it doesn’t matter at what time you leave your bed or hit your bed as long as you are being honest in your work. I mean, even if I wake up at 11 and start my work since then for say 7-8 hours, so does that mean than I am not working sufficiently or I am being dishonest towards my work? Well, all these cliches like what Benjamin Franklin said “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” are fine, but today one has to think according to their accord. Well no offence, and rather all the best for everyone’s future. Take care.

    I have been using some of the techniques mentioned above, already. Like,

    1. I write down all deadlines, assignments to do, errands, goals, etc., for the present month in a monthly calender, above the respective dates.

    2. Then, I prioritize what is the task that must be done for this week alone with the help of the above list.

    3. Further, I narrow it down to goals, that must be done today.

    4. Do step 3 again, everyday.

    If I am successful or satisfied with what I have done I reward myself like watching a newly bought CD, going out with friends, etc.

    Of-course, many times I am not successful and get away from this habit, but still I try to stick to it.

    Also sometimes, I use my mobile phone’s reminder setting to help me remind of deadlines.
