Universities for GRE Score 291 – MS in Computer Science

> Following post was shared by Yash.

I gave my GRE Exam on 27th July.

My score is 291(Verbal 135 , Quant 156).

It was a bit low score as per my target is 300+.

I had given

  • 5 Kaplan test
  • 2 Barrons
  • 1 Powerprep

Average  Score is 300. So guess on test day score was +10 or -10 possible.

I got Dummy Section in Verbal. In Verbal Section RC is quite hard. And Single RC has around 8-9 Questions.

My advice to all GRE prep.

Do not get hyper on test day. I got hyper in Quant Sections Where my calculation got mistakes.

Be cool And I had found some Long Questions in Quant Sections So be Prepared for long Questions.

AWA And Issue are quite easy and They are same from given TOPICS on GRE Site.

Arriving at GRE Test Center

My exam time was 12:30 PM on 27th July. I had reached test center 45mins. Ago. After complete whole identification process. They started exam immediately. around 12:10PM.

I had taken 10min. break and it was quite useful. Use Headphone for Practice Because some People reading the whole Questions. It irritates..

I am applying for Spring 2013 USA.

I had completed my B.E.(IT) in 2008 and I have been working in the IT industry from last 4 Years.

My GPA is Low. So I had reported scores for following universities.

Course Name: Software Engineering

  1. NYU Poly
  2. IIT chicago
  3. Santa Clara Uni.
  4. NJIT

I have some questions.

  1. What are chances of Getting admission in these 4 Uni And Does this Score enough?
  2. Does California State Uni. open for Spring 2013? (According to this site they Cancel SPRING 2013 www.csun.edu )
  3. How much Minimum Score i need in TOFEL?
  4. And I month Enough For TOFEL?

oh and btw, if any 1 of u is sure you are gonne get through any of the universities and you happen to be a resident or stay nearby the college, you should try looking up into the open university courses that are being offered as you can transfer credits into your ms programs. and in santa clara university would waive off gre scores but with a few conditions under open university. i think its worth checking out.

My score is 145 in Verbal and 164 in quant. I have completed MTech Dual Degree (Machine Design) .I want to apply for PhD, in Engineering Mechanics or applied Maths. What are my chances? Where should I apply? I havent given TOEFL yet.

    • jamini on August 8, 2012 at 4:18 PM

Come on you already got a masters degree.. at this stage you should not be asking EM or app maths as you are already into research. You have not provided any detail.. your Ph.D aspirations would depend solely on the work you have done so far. EM is the basis of all the engineering courses. If you are more into developing of solutions via mathematical model like derivation of the differential equations of motion .. single function…the Lagrangian/Hamilton.. then your inclination would be towards applied mathematics but in case you are fascinated with the principles of stationary action itself then it is physics/mechanics. Just one thing – whatever you choose.. make sure you enjoy it before committing your entire life into the labs!

    Hi,
I’m also confused that selection of universities is done prior to gre exam or after it?
Please tell me that maximum intake is in which season- spring or fall?
I’m preparing for spring 2014, then when should I take gre or toefl?

  12. sahil on August 6, 2012 at 3:19 PM

Hi my advice is to drop Santa Clara Uni — Too expensive

    • Yash on August 8, 2012 at 8:02 AM

      Hi Sahil,

You are right Santa Clara is Too expensive but California State University Did not offer Spring 2013. And I want to pursue MS in Software Engg. in California State.

Can you recommend me Some Good Universities in California?

      Thanks
      Yash

    Hello Yash,
I think retaking GRE is not the best option as time matters.
Since most of the University deadlines are by mid September, you won’t be having much time to prepare and take GRE again. And in major Indian cities GRE dates are booked till NOV.
( You can consider retaking GRE if time permits ).
Don’t get demotivated by your score.
Give your best in TOEFL. You mentioned you’ve been working for around 4 yrs.
So that can help you in building a very strong SOP. Recommendations you get will also place your application ahead of others.
I suggest you apply as soon as you finish TOEFL.
    Good Luck.

    • Yash on August 8, 2012 at 8:04 AM

      Hello Bharathi,

      Thanks for your help.

I had taken date of TOEFL on 25th Aug. Retaking GRE is still not sure. As Uni. has started application a long time and Spring 2013 in California State Uni. Not applicable. Can you give me some other good uni. name for applying on GRE 291 Score.

      Thanks
      Yash

    • jamini on August 8, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Just an addition.. GRE score is indicative. If one does his/her best and gets 291 then a retake would fetch something similar. In case you had no idea about GRE and took a plunge then you might actually improve your score. But with the kind of research which goes into these exams it is unlikely … GRE score is one of the factors considered by the admission committee. Just as Bharathi has pointed out don’t underestimate the value of SOP, recommendation letters and work experience.. these will put your application way ahead.
