F1 Visa Interview in Nigeria

Hello everybody, my names are Foster.  I got my I-20 from International Academy of Design and Technology located at Orlando, Florida. I am a graduate from a well know University in Nigeria. Here’s how my interview went:

Me- Good Morning Sir.
VO – Didn’t answer.

VO – You are Foster A?
Me- I said Yes.

VO- You got admission at IADT to study Information Technology?
ME- Yes sir

VO- Why IADT
Me- Because of high academic profile
VO- Ok

VO- What do you know about Informatioan Technology?
Me- My country lacks Information Technology, which has a negative impact on her economy.

VO- How many schools did you apply?
Me- 3

VO- Name them
ME- Northeastern University, Broward college and IADT

VO- How did you get to know about IADT

ME- Well my mom was a teacher. She got to know about the schol and she told me to apply and I was given an admission.
VO- Did you write any ACT

Me- No

VO- I’m sorry and he passed me the unlucky paper.
ME- I asked why did you deny my F1 Visa?
VO- Kept quiet and I left.

Reasons for Rejection

I’m not sure why you have to call VO as unfriendly.  I don’t see anything in this interview to tag visa officer as unfriendly.I don’t see anything in this interview to tag the visa officer as unfriendly.

  • You weren’t prepared for the interview.
  • Answers didn’t show genuine interest to Study in USA.
  • How did you know about IADT? Your answer to the question with your mom asking your apply is totally not acceptable.
  • Plus you didn’t write ACT or SAT.
  • I would have thought you are not a qualified student and serious student.

You could improve your visa chances by applying to better university with SAT or ACT scores. You can make a better argument next time if you choose to take that route.

  1. Hello, I work as an admission advisor for international students at a Community College in the US and I mostly work with F-1 Student VISA’s. The most common reason for students to get denied VISA’s in Nigeria is the lack of connection to one’s home country. For example, I saw a comment that said their Brother-in-law was their sponsor in the US, that gives the idea that you might not come back to your home country. Most people use family or something more impactful as their reason to stay.
Another thing to keep in mind, when you set up your VISA interview, you have the option to do it in English or in your home language. If you choose home language, you automatically get denied even though you still go through the interview.
If anyone is interested in obtaining an F-1 VISA, use this website for tips on how to pass your interview -> https://www.nafsa.org/findresources/Default.aspx?id=8643 . NAFSA is a non-profit organization that works with International students to obtain a higher education. I always send this to my students when they are accepted into our College.
I hope you find this useful and best of luck on your interviews.

  4. Yeah, Edu Rotimi is right. Your answers do not show that you are passionate and knowledgeable about what you are going for.
You have to prepare and be detailed in your answers. I will advise you take the ACT the V.O asked about. It reflects you are serious and not just looking for a way out. Don’t give up. Try again. All the best.

  5. I believe your answers were quite vague. For example, when asked why IADT, you answered, ” Because of high academic profile”. That doesn’t tell me you know much about IADT. Also, you didn’t say enough on what you know about info tech, you didn’t really sound like you knew much on it. I believe if you better prepare yourself and give another try, you should get a Visa.
