Can F1 Student Work 2 Part Time Jobs for 40 Hours per Week?

I came in America to study for my masters this year jan 2011.When i reached here it was not easy but somehow I managed. There was pressure from everybody to try and find a job especially on campus, since it would go along way in helping my parents pay for the tuition.

Fortunately i did get a job this October after pestering the office of international office and also employers within campus.

I got a job in the food dining services. Then just the other day I got a call from the upsa(university police assistant) office, for an interview on a job that i had applied. I went for the interview this november and they gave me a job, which i am to start in january 2013.

I know as an international student i am supposed to work for 20 hrs per week during full-time study. I don’t want to leave my other job because I need the experience, could I work both jobs per week for more than 20 hrs per week, while school is in session.

Will it get me into trouble and is it worth it? This can help my parents a lot, since i have one semester left to finish, and i have drained their resources dry. Your response will be highly appreciated.

Part Time Jobs

Looks like you are more concerned about making money to lower burden on your parents than improving your academic skills.

Know the F1 Visa Rules.

You know the F1 Visa rules with respect to part-time jobs. Then why do you want to break the rules?

I don’t understand why you trying to save few hundred dollars by working for like $10 per hour when your goal should be to improve your academic skills, professional network which would  get you full-time job.

Did you read this – 70 Days in US – Screwed up Midterms, but Back on Track. He is doing exact opposite of what you are trying to do.

You can work only max 20 hours per week. If you get caught, do you want to be deported? If money is more important than academics, then go ahead and work 2 part-time jobs. If you get caught and face problems, then don’t post another question “I got caught working 2 part-time jobs for 40 hours, what should I do?”

I’m not sure how the experience from Dinning services is going to boost your resume in getting full time job.

  1. Hi am vidya .I have a great doubt whether i ll get a job within a month of joining to my masters. My family is not that much affordable to pay for me. Pls help me to know about the part time jobs and how much i will earn for a month..

    1. Hi Vidya, Many students get financial assistance from the concerned department/University at the time of admissions and some get it after the first semester or even the first year. Nothing is guaranteed. Try your level best once you land in your department rest is all luck!
Part time/Off campus jobs are also available but pay you less compared to the on campus jobs. Consider all pros and cons to decide well.

  2. If innocent do wrong,we will tell that is wrong.

    1. So, many students are now using the blog to get info about USA education and I appreciate each and everyone of them.
At same time, this is a blog and I free to express my opinion. I have a personality and blog will be run based on that. Being popular doesn’t mean I cannot criticize others who know the rules and want to break it.

  7. I agree with the moderator….You are there to make a career which I suppose is the ultimate happiness for your parents….and If they have been willing to finance you uptill now…they surely can manage one moe semester….pick one job…go by the rules of that nation…and live a simple and less complicated life….
