My visa interview is next week ( on May 11th, 2012 ) at Chennai consulate. I am heading to Purdue for M.S in Aeronautics and Astronautics.

The i20 amount is $42816 and I’m planning to show Rs. 24 Lakhs ( ~$48k ) of FDs and gold certificates worth Rs. 18 Lakhs ( ~$36k ) . Also I will be showing two properties valued at a total of 2 crores.

I have had a visitor visa rejected two years back.

Which university and degree?

Purdue University for M.S in Aeronautics and Astronautics

Why did you select this university?

Purdue has one of the best departments in this field, doing pioneering work in space research. I wish to do research in Space Systems Design, and Purdue has some of the best professors and research facilities for this.

What is your fees in I-20 for first the year?

Tuition fees comes to $29,986. Total amount on i20 is $42816.

How many universities did you apply and list them

I applied to 7 universities, 6 of in the US. They are Stanford University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Purdue University, Virginia Tech, University of Florida, Arizona State University ( and TU Delft in the Netherlands ). I got admit only from Purdue so far.

Who is going to sponsor your education and how?

My parents are going to sponsor my education from our family savings. We have savings of around 45 Lakhs as cash and gold and two properties worth 2 crores in total

What will you do after graduation?

After graduation I wish to return to India and work in a research position for one of the many aerospace giants such as Boeing who are setting up facilities in India.

Why USA?

USA has a very flexible education system, without a fixed syllabus which allows me to choose courses of my choice. Aside from that, most of the universities that are at the forefront in this field are American and the dept at Purdue itself its one of the best in the world.

These subjects are also taught in other universities also but why this university?

Purdue has a really great coursework, especially oriented towards the space-side of aerospace engg. There is also a great deal of amazing research being done in this field at Purdue. For example, only a few weeks back, Prof Longuski from Purdue and some of his students presented a research project on a viable plan for the colonisation of Mars. This is exactly the kind of stuff I want to work on.

Who is sponsoring you?

My family.

What does your father do?

My father retired as a Senior Audit Officer under the Accountant General’s Office of the Govt. of India.

What is your father’s income?

He earns a pension of around Rs. 3 Lakhs per annum.
( Can also specify mother’s pension, which brings the total to around 5 Lakhs per annum )

Why are you leaving you current job? (if you are working)

My current job is in an entirely different field ( mobile app development ) and I went into that because the experience of starting up and running a company seemed very worthwhile. Since I’m a partner, I will keep earning the fruit of my work even while I’m away.

Tell me how you can prove that you are going to come back?

I am the only son of my parents and I have a responsibility towards them to come back. Also, I am a genuine student and worked hard to get admission into one of the best universities in the world, so that I may return and work for the betterment of my country.

I have two sponsors and I am confused in choosing the appropriate one as both have problems regarding preparation of documents..!!. The deadline to send financial documents is nearing. If I use the financial documents of one of my sponsors to get I20, must I use the same sponsor for VI or is it possible to use a different sponsor for VI.?

    • kirti on May 8, 2012 at 9:20 AM

It is good if your parents can sponsor .& Yes u have to use the same sponsor as the I-20 will have that data on it .
as for the mock test u should give short &to the point answers i.e if asked who is the sponsor say my parents dont elaborate unless asked
also i think the retirement may be a setback cause when i went for my VI my neighbor was asked this question .&got a reject .he explained in detai
labout his finances but that VO just would not listen they r very very whimsical &r just waiting for a reason to reject
      yet all the best

    Hey,
    @As always
About the Boeing thing, it is extremely difficult to get into aerospace engg jobs in the US because they are primarily available only to citizens.

About the property, my parents invested heavily and saved a lot for our education! And property appreciates with time. 😉

I will think of how to improve the answer. Thanks for the tips!
Please let me know if you have any more comments.

    I would say improve

What will you do after graduation?

After graduation I wish to return to India and work in a research position for one of the many aerospace giants such as Boeing who are setting up facilities in India.

This shows you may work for Boeing in US if given chance.

By the way I hope my father was retired govt. officer with annual salary of 3 lakhs and still property worth 2 crores. lol.

Nice post. Much better than the interviews which state “said” to every question.
