1 Year Gap Between BE and MS; Impact on Admission
I’m completing my engg. in cs in June 2010…but I’ve still not taken the GRE n planning to take the exam in Aug 2010,thus I’ll get admission in fall 2011, so there will be a gap of one year…will this be a negative aspect of my profile to get into high ranking university.
I don’t know why people pay so much attention to gap in education. People attend universities at age over 50 and 60. 1 Year gap has got nothing to do with admission. If you satisfy the admission requirements ( GRE, GPA, Marks Percentage) , you will get admit (I-20).
During visa you may be asked what were you doing during last one year.
Give the right reasons.
If you were preparing for GRE and applying for universities, give that same reason. Don’t make up new reasons.
If you have several years gap between BE and MS and you stayed home without doing any work, then you have to give reasoning for the gap. 1 year is no big deal.
Also, there is no need to wait till Fall 2011, you can apply for Spring 2011, if you complete GRE and TOEFL by end of July/early August.

i just graduated(2012) and have been admitted in ME automobile engg at JU. I just want to go to Clemson Univ for MS in automobile.So my only option is to apply for Fall 2013.Does a yeargap really affect admission.??

I completed my plus 2 in the year 1998 and secured 2522 rank in eamcet and got admission in CBIT (chemical engg) in the year 1999.
I was regular to college for two years (1999-2001) and i some how completed 2yrs in engg by 2002. i discontinued my engg in 3rd year and i pretended to my parents that i got job and i used to leave home in d morning and come back in d evening. for about 4 years i lied and i used to spend most of my time in temples and listening to spiritual discourses and working on vedic philosophy and even came to know the essence of life by various vedi textures. I realised in the year 2007 that sitting idle without any work is a big sin and i explained everything to my parents and thought of persuing degree from reputed college.
i secured seat in loyola and completed my bsc(computer maint and engg) with an aggregate of 80.6%. secured 2nd in the entire department and even placed in cognizant in my third year and i worked as a process executive for 6 months and thought of making sth big.
so i wrote gre and toefl. i secured 1070 in gre and 98 in toefl. applied to 4 universities

i am waiting for i20. if i get a conditional i20(15 years of education), what is the probability of getting f1 visa. I am very very serious about persuing ms in usa.
if the vo puts me a question about the long gap should i say him the actual reason mentioned above or should i modify it. can you please help me out?

but i am so confused because my criteria is so weak like…
1. Bsc IT(Distance Education)(result will de declared in march 2011) from KUVEMPU UNIVERSITY(Banglore). it is recognized by UGC.
as well i did …"GNIIT(software engineering) diploma from Niit south ex" delhi.
2. Completed 12th(pcm) in 2004 from UP Board.
3. Completed 10th from in 2002 from UP Board.
4. I don't have any work experience.
There is a long GAP between 12th to Bsc IT(near about 4 years).
i know , i have lost my carrer.
but i really want to do ms(cs) from us or uk.

Am not saying that there is no hope.. There is .. but the hope is damn bleak… Consider this .. Tried to apply for so many colleges and unfortunately a lot of them have stopped giving spring Admissions playing the lack-of-Funds or giving-admissions-only-to-Americans .. Got a GRE score of 1370 Toefl of 111 B.E. Mech with 62% from Mumbai University and still have to now aim for lower colleges ….. This is damn frustrating…. but still keeping my hopes up.. hey is there any guy/gal going for Spring 2011 out here???
i have completed my computer science and engineering with 70%. I took up my GRE and got a score of 1230, am yet to take up TOEFL. how is it to pursue a group like bio-informatics. how are the prospectus. Is it manageable to take up a different stream altogether.

@DARTHVADER: You can get admission without any work experience. Work experience is necessary for only management courses.
So cheer up and go ahead.

i ve just finished my btech. (EEE) in JUNE 2010… was plannin' to go for MS in FALL 2011 after one year of some core job… but dint get job… i ve already taken the GRE now (1330) and might take it again….
i will still try for a job but i don't know if i will get one… so would one year of gap WITHOUT a job affect my admission process in FALL 2011…

I completed my B.E Computers in 2008 and have been working in an IT company since then. I am planning to take GRE this year around Oct last week for taking admission in Fall 2011. I have some qts in this regard:
1. What are, generally, the last dates for applying to most of the good universitites in U.S.?
2. What are the chances, if I miss to apply within the deadline, to reach US in 2011?
3. What GRE score is sufficient to get into a decent college with good placements?
4. Does work experience count while getting an admission?

Yes you can get admission if you take GRE in Jan 2011. But make sure you book the dates ASAP.

Absolutely true! a years sabbatical bears no relevance on your decision to apply for Maters! I took a year off after completing my engineering! By god's grace I have been admitted to all the 4 schools i applied to! But if you are a person who has been used to tight schedules and deadlines then be prepared for changes in your daily workings! moreover gre and Toefl is all about self motivation! its not about pass and fail as our university exams have! the more focused you are the more better it is for you! Be careful of montony and boredom they are goal killers! dont just dig deep into studies! develop your skills learn new traits! time will fly off!

If you take GRE in first week of Aug, you will have few choice of universities to apply. You will be very tight wrt deadlines. But, it's worth to give a try. Civil and Architecture courses require portfolio in most cases.

IF BSc is 4 year course, you can apply for Fall 2011 by completing GRE by end of this year.
@hemanth: It would be very difficult for you to get admissions with scholarship because generally the application window for applications requiring assistance closes well in advance.
But yes you can get admission in that session if you want to apply without applying for scholarship.
@Azkaban: You need to understand that different universities have different criteria for selection. Most importantly each application is evaluated based on the package as a whole: your CGPA, GRE scores, Special achievements in concerned field.
As for the GPA and CGPA. Both of them are different CGPA is calculated based on GPAs.
In fact, I pursued Master's a year after graduating from Bachelor's. I didn't face any problem and I believe so many others as well.
as HSB mentioned, you can try for Spring/Summer 2011. No need to wait till Fall.

Hey, I have applied to UTD, UTA, RIT, SUNY-Binghamton, NJIT for MSCS for Spring 2011. Yesterday i got a mail from NJIT , that they like my profile and asked me ..if i can join for this Fall 2010 only. They even send me I20. Session starting from September.
Suggest me what to do………its was kind of unexpected Bouncer to me …my packets reached just 15 days ago and i have a I20 right now ???
