Revised GRE is offered from August 2011.

What is GRE?

Prospective graduate and business school students can take GRE. test. Schools require GRE test to evaluate applicants for Graduate school admission. GRE General Test provides a common measure for comparing candidates’ qualifications.

GRE scores are used by admissions committee members in addition to applicants academic profile – undergraduate records, recommendation letters, statement of essay and other requirements.

Test Content and Format

GRE Test content includes three different sections.

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Analytical Writing

Verbal Reasoning — Measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences and recognize relationships among words and concepts.

Test Scores

GRE test scores are valid for five years after the testing year in which you tested (July 1–June 30). Currently, scores earned from July 1, 2007, to the present are available.

GRE Test Contents include 3 sections and GRE test taker will receive individual section score in the GRE score report.

GRE Test Scores

SectionScores
Verbal Reasoning130–170, in 1 point increments
Quantitative Reasoning130–170, in 1 point increments
Analytical Writing0–6, in half point increments

If no questions are answered for a specific measure (e.g., Verbal Reasoning), then you will receive a No Score (NS) for that measure.

Old GRE Test Scores

SectionScores
Verbal Reasoning200–800, in 10-point increments
Quantitative Reasoning200–800, in 10-point increments
Analytical Writing0–6, in half-point increments

If no questions are answered for a specific section (e.g., Verbal Reasoning), then you will receive a No Score (NS) for that section.

How is GRE Test Scored?

Revised GRE is Multi-Stage test where its section level adaptive.

GRE Test content includes 2 verbal and 2 quantitative sections. Then one unscored verbal or quantitative section.

Depending on the performance in section 1, the test taker is routed to one of several alternative second-stage tests, each of which consists of a fixed set of questions and differs on average difficulty.

Section 1 and Sections 2 will contain 3 levels of questions

  1. Easy
  2. Moderate
  3. Difficult

Moderately difficult level of questions will be given to test takers in Section 1. Based on your performance you will get one of 3 levels in section 2.

  • Score 165 in Section 1, then you will be routed to Difficult Level in Section 2.
  • If you score 135 then you will be routed to Easy Stage 2

Another variation can be

  • Stage 1: Moderately Difficult
  • Stage 2: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, Difficult and Very Difficult

The GRE revised General Test is offered at 700 test centers in more than 160 countries.

Computer-based GRE test is available on a continuous basis throughout the year in most parts of the world.

In Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, the computer-based test is available one to three times per month.

Where computer-based testing is not available, the test is offered in a paper-based format up to three times a year in October, November and February.

Consider the following factors before deciding to take GRE

  1. University deadlines
  2. You target GRE score
  3. Current GRE Score level
  4. Time commitment ( to prepare for GRE) to reach target GRE Scores

Best Time to Take GRE?

Best time to take GRE is based on 4 factors listed above.

You have to plan in advance about registering for GRE, then work backwards to test prep, time required to reach your target GRE score.

Best time to take GRE, is when you have enough time to apply to Universities for the semester you plan to apply as well.

There is myth about GRE Exam will be hard during months of November and December.

There is no truth to the above myth. GRE Exam will test your skills. It doesn’t mater when you take GRE, your scores will reflect your skill level.

GRE Test Centers vary based on GRE test format

  • Computer Based GRE
  • Paper Based GRE

Computer Based GRE

  • The GRE® revised General Test is given year-round at computer-based test centers in most locations around the world. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Score reports are mailed to you and the score recipients you designate approximately 10–15 days after your test date. You can view your scores online at My GRE approximately 10–15 days after your test date.
  • You can take the GRE revised General Test (computer-based and paper-based) only once every 30 days, and no more than five times within any continuous rolling 12-month period. This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously. If you take only the paper-based GRE revised General Test, you may take it as often as it is offered.

Paper-based GRE revised General Test

  • Paper-based GRE revised General Test administrations are offered in areas where computer-based testing is not available.
  • Not all test centers are open on all test dates. Download the Test Center List (PDF) for testing locations.
  • Be sure to check the score report mailing date when selecting a test date.
  • You can take the GRE revised General Test (computer-based and paper-based) only once every 30 days, and no more than five times within any continuous rolling 12-month period. This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously. If you only take the paper-based GRE revised General Test, you can take it as often as it is offered.

GRE Test Scoring : Raw Score to Equating

Understanding Revised GRE Test Scoring will help you prepare better for the Revised GRE test.

After attending ETS – Revised GRE Webinar, they gave interesting details on how Revised GRE Scoring works, which I didn’t find in ETS Revised GRE Site.

GRE Test Scoring Details

The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning measures are section-level adaptive. This means the computer selects the second section difficulty is based on your performance on the first section.

Within each section, all questions contribute equally to the final score. For each of the two measures, a raw score is computed. The raw score is the number of questions you answered correctly.

The raw score is converted to a scaled score through a process known as equating.

The equating process accounts for minor variations in difficulty among the different test editions as well as the differences in difficulty introduced by the section-level adaptation.

Thus a given scale score reflects approximately the same level of performance regardless of which second section was selected and when the test was taken.

  • Raw New GRE Score = Number of Questions Correct
  • Raw GRE Scores is converted to Scaled Score by Equating
  • Scaled Score will be in Range 130 to 170

Revised GRE Scoring – Example

Will there be difference in GRE Test scoring if a student A and B got total of 15 questions right in following order

  • Student A
    • Section 1 – 5 Right
    • Section 2 – 10 Right
    • Total Correct – 15
  • Student B
    • Section 1 – 10 Right
    • Section 2 – 5 Right
    • Total Correct = 15

Based on Section-level New GRE Scoring, student A and B will not have the same scores.

This where you have to understand the process of Equating in Revised GRE Scoring.

After you complete section 1 (say Verbal), section 2 will be tougher than section 1. So, value per question in section 2 will be higher.

Within each section, all questions contribute equally to the final score.

Which means, score for each question between 2 sections is not the same.

Equating factor is multiplied with RAW Score to adjust for question toughness and question variations.

I’m not sure of Equating factor is available per question or section wise. But, unlike Old GRE scoring, where each question’s value is based on answers to your previous question.

But in section-level New GRE, difficulty level of questions in section 2 depends on your performance in section 1.

Cancelling GRE Scores

You will find answers to following questions answered in this article – Cancelling GRE Scores.

  • What is GRE Score Cancellation?
  • How to Cancel the GRE Score?
  • When to Cancel the GRE Scores?
  • Cancel GRE Scores after test?

What is GRE Score Cancellation?

ETS offers an option for GRE Test taker to cancel the GRE Test Score at end of the test, but before you can view the unofficial GRE test score in the computer monitor.

How to Cancel the GRE Score?

After you have completed all the GRE Test sections and before you can view the unofficial GRE scores, you will have an option to cancel the GRE Test score.

If you view your test scores at a computer-based revised GRE General Test, you cannot cancel them at a later date.

When to Cancel the GRE Scores?

Under what circumstances should I cancel the GRE test scores?

With new GRE ScoreSelect option, I don’t see a need for any GRE Test taker to cancel the GRE Test score.

Before ScoreSelect option was introduced, all the previous GRE test scores taken in last 5 years will be reported to the institutes.

Since, test takers now have an option to report  their best GRE test score, you don’t have to cancel the GRE scores.

If in case your score is below your target score, this experience should help you improve GRE Score in next attempt.

I know few  GRE test takers who cancelled their GRE score accidentally.

It is possible to reinstate cancelled GRE Scores by paying $30 to ETS within 60 days of the test date.

Cancelling GRE Scores after test?

It’s not possible to cancel your GRE test score after you have viewed the unofficial GRE Test score.

Hi Rahul, GRE scores and academic percentage are both on a lower side. But I would say admissions are still possible. Don’t lose hope. Try to assess what credentials you can highlight in your statement of purpose based on which you can seek admissions. For detailed evaluation post your profile details in the forum section.

can you suggest any good universities for an m.s. degree in automobiles in us…does an ms in automobiles have further scope for jobs in us ????

    • Aman on February 1, 2013 at 12:59 PM

There are plenty in Germany and education is highly subsidised by government there. You can opt for full English courses available in select universities in Germany.

      • Aman on February 1, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Scope in job:That depends on your skills:you should love automobile Enginiering for that.In Germany and Detriot, people want you if you are pationate about Enginiering. The question whether I would have job oppurtunity in this field is not accepted from a persion who is passionate. Its only a applicable question for Indian scenario where people make cheap low quality Nano like cars.Remember that Automobile Enginiering in US or Germany is very advanced compared to that when you do the same degree in India.

I have done BE(IT) from university of Pune.
    my marks: BE-68%
    Diploma-77%
I have done certifications for OCA level 1 and 2(SQL and PL-SQL respectively)
But i took an extra year to complete my engineering.
How will that affect my admission to US for MS(CS).
Will I even be considered eligible?

    • HSB Counselor on January 22, 2013 at 5:56 AM

      Hi Shweta,
Well nothing to worry about in case there has been a genuine reason for the delay in your degree completion. You would be considered eligible for admissions. You can definitely expect admission offers from US Universities.
      Good Luck!

Hii Sir, I got 146 in verbal section and 142 in Quant section. Please tell me what will be my score according to the old scoring pattern. Is it enough to get my Masters done in US in Biotech?? Please reply.

  34. Goutam on October 3, 2012 at 11:47 AM

    10th 92%
    12th 94%
Grad(B. Tech EEE) 3.352 or 8.38, I am the topper of the class in the most recent 56
credits (Does this help in anyway)
    GRE – 308 ( quant 162, verbal 146) awa (awaiting)
TOEFL – yet to take, expecting >105

3 college projects in embedded systems, 1 in Algorithms
Won 3 to 4 robotic competitions in Symposiums
1 paper published at a International Conference
2 papers presented at National level College Symposiums

These are the univs i shortlisted markwise for MS in Electrical or Embedded systems. Rate whether they are ambi, moder or safe.

UTexas, Dallas (mention whether RA/TA chances are there)
UTexas, Arlington (mention whether RA/TA chances are there)
    SUNY Buffalo
Uni Colorado, Boulder (mention whether RA/TA chances are there)
ASU (mention whether RA/TA chances are there)
    UTexas Austin
    Utah State Univ

Is 308 GRE a decent score with quant 162 or should i consider retaking it?

    Any chances for RA/TA?

Hello guys I’m new around here:)
I’m doing my UG from a govt. college (I’m in 1st year) and wish to pursue my PG degree from abroad.I got some questions about it,since, I have recently thought about it and I’m quite less informed about it:

1)Is US the ultimate destination for this? How is germany in comparison to it? In terms of quality of education and total cost.If you have any better alternative do tell me.

2)I read on many instances on this blog that one should give both GRE and TOEFL. Why both? Any other exam I should give just to be on safe side?

3)I guess I would really be needing a scholarship or some sort of tution fee waiver ,on what criteria it depends on?

4)I see for e.g. in GRE verbal section is scored from 130-170 with “1 point increment”.What do you mean by “1 point increment?”

    • Raghu on October 3, 2012 at 10:56 AM

Keep reading the articles in the blog. Refer to section related to GRE, TOEFL for more information.

yes gre maintains a monthly database and questions might or might not come out to be same. But the probability is high for same questions.

        • Pri on November 19, 2012 at 2:20 AM

where can we access that database?

  41. Suryanshu on September 21, 2012 at 3:44 PM

    Hi HSB,
I wrote my gre exam today and was not satisfied with my verbal score.
    I got 316 overall (quant -168,verbal – 148)
Should i write gre exam again?? or is it too late to give the exam; considering that i was aiming for top colleges and also that i havent given my toefl yet. Moreover, deadlines of most of colleges are closing in november.
Furthermore, can u suggest me some good colleges with this score?
I have 1.5 years of work experience working for an American based M.N.C Bechtel India.
My C.G is 8.82. My college is N.I.T. Kurukshetra. I am looking for masters in Structures.
Plus i have one research paper in an international conference.

    Thanks

I would like to improve my verbal score by 8-10 points. can u please suggest me how to do it in 7 days. I am planning to go for a Master’s in analytics course. ood verbal score. The institutions that I am targeting are University of San Francisco, University of Cincinnati, Northwestern University and a couple of others. Can you also guide me how much score I should target for to apply for the mentioned program in these universities. The course is pretty mathematical but I am not sure the minimum verbal that i should get for such a course. Also should I increase my quant score too or just focus on verbal right now. Please guide me with the right approach and strategy to take.

    hi ,

i have gre score of 305(302+3) and toefl 99.want to write my gre in nov 2012..will I be able to apply for fall 2013.

    • Subramanian on October 23, 2012 at 9:54 PM

I think you will be able to apply for admission to the Fall 2013 term (i.e., Aug-Sep 2013 term) if you take the GRE in November 2012.

The best thing to do would be to check the Websites of the universities that you plan to apply to, for their application deadlines. If the application and/or documentation deadline is very close to your GRE date, you can even e-mail the university and ask them whether they will be willing to wait for your OFFICIAL GRE score, provided you submit your application and other documents before the deadline. Sometimes they will be willing to help you out.

    Hi HSB,

    I took GRE yesterday(16-8-2012).
MY GRE score is just ok ok types. It is 312 (Verbal – 148 , Quant – 164).

I think I can improve in both sections and give a maximum stretch to Verbal from 148 to 157 atmost and in quant – 168 or may be 170.

The thing is that I dnt know if it will be of worth to take the test again.
I am planning to apply for the following universities for Aug 2013 admission and I do not want to delay more.

    University of Maryland
    UT Austin,
    Ohio State,
    San Jose University
    North Carolina State University
    University of Southern California.

Please let me know whether I stand a chance if at all in these universities.
    Please help !!
I have not yet taken toefl but I am quite sure that I will get decent enough marks to qualify.

I have impressive extra-curricular and even have a silver at state level in 1 sport.

  55. Hari on August 15, 2012 at 10:25 AM

hey Sridivya u will be getting in US universities but the fact is visa will be a problem for ur GRE score, at-least try bringing it as much as close to 295+. Going to US is a good option but the level of University also matters as it has to be worth the money u spend for graduate course, and do get a score of TOEFL of 90+ and RETAKING GRE is the best option for you as you have a low GRE score 🙁

gre is not the ONLY criteria… Rather it’s just a part of the application process used to screen the applicants.. So if u r overall academic performance is good..you can make up for your low gre score..

in my 3rd year BE(6th sem)in field of telecommunication in VTU(vishveshwaraih technological university). unfortunately i got 2 backlogs, till then never in ma life i had never faced failure. i have a great passion of doing my higher studies(MS) in abroad. but now im very much scared that will these backlogs would really hamper ma higher studies?
my score are as shown below….
    10th marks–91%
    12th marks–78%
    BE marks(upto 6th sem)-65.5%
so these are my stats… i want to know that……………….

    2. will i get a good college in abroad especially in us?
3.how much should i score in gre to compensate to get good universities?
4.should i need work experience before doing ms?
im very much scared about my academics. will this seriously affect me in future.
especially will they question about my backlogs?
all these things are going in my mind.

First of all I would don’t worry, I myself was in the very same condition had a back in my electronics lab otherwise above average profile.bi secured a masters seat with 1000+ GRE score in 2010.
All that I would say is don’t worry about backlogs just move on with true efforts.

thanks a lot miss kavitha ji!!
i was really scared with this issue.
the good thing is i got one subject cleared during a revaluation and now me left with a single subject that is with lab only.
your suggestions made me still more strong and work towards my future studies.

now i feel very much comfortable with your reply.

Hey, I had booked July 31st, Mumbai for my gre test. Now I want to reschedule it to Sept (any date, any time will do). But today when I tried to reschedule on the GRE prometric site, it showed all slots in Sept and Oct are full and few dates in Aug, the last being 17th Aug, are available. Is there any possibility of reopening of Sept slots before 25th July? Plz help.

I just registered for GRE. The cost was 175$ which was surprising for me for I had expected it to be 190$. Moreover, I wished to fill the names of 4 universitites wherein I wanted to send my scores for free but that option was shown nowhere when I was registering. Have I missed something while filling the form. Waiting for your reply earnestly..

  84. Bharat on July 5, 2012 at 7:02 AM

    Hi Guys,

This is Bharat. I have got more than 4 years of IT experience. I am planning for Spring intake 2013. I am giving my TOEFL exam on 28th July and GRE on 16th AUG. I want to know what would be the good score like. Since I am working I hardly get 3-4 hours a day to study. I beleive I would get somewhere around 300-310. Will that be a good score for me to get into a decent enough university. I am using Barron, ETS, Kaplan and a few other online websites for my preparation. Anything else that I need to refer. Kindly help me clarify the doubts that I have.

    Thanks….!!!

hey john can u help me regarding GRE preaparations??

      • john on June 28, 2012 at 11:01 PM

        Hi

Definitely.. If you have one month then do follow the below plan I am sure that this will be best for you and others who want to crack safe score.

Books required : Barrons, Ets official gre guide ( thats it no more than this )

        1) First thing see the gre pattern and sample questions from Barrons or any other book (3 hours )
        2) MUST write 1 practise gre exam ( barrons or any other ) TIMED!!!!!!!!!!! This will give you a big picture on what to study ….. if you get 300 at this time then you can definitley very good score in 1 month preprn
        3) Learn 1000 or 1500 important gre words . u can get from internet.. Believe me u dont need anything more than this.. If you have so much of time then pls keep on practise of reading compression
        4) complete barrons and ets official guide for both maths and verbal.. Thats it dont try to overdo.. first do this perfectly before going to anyother
        5) last and final and most impo. step.. Practise atleast 2 gre exams in a week . This will be the deciding factor for your goal… I suggest to take the powerprep at exactly half the month .. if you have 1 month prep time.

Dont overdo or neglect this.. Trust me this will be totally fine to get good score.. All the best guys……………….

          12th marks–78%

I'm facing a difficult situation right now as I haven't received my GRE and Toefl score cards by mail. I only have the soft copies of the scores. I e-mailed to ETS regarding this and they sent me another copy of GRE score(according to ETS), but again I haven't received any score card yet, I wrote to ETS one more time and this time they simply replied "wait for some time". I appeard in GRE in september 2010 and appeared in Toefl in december 2010. People told me that I need my score cards for Visa interview, otherwise I might face some problems. Now I really don't know what to do. Kindly suggest.

    Middle name: Raj

    Family name: Kakumanu

But the middle name is ignored in the confirmation mail and in the receipt and it is displayed as just "Prudhvi Kakumanu" instead of "Prudhvi Raj Kakumanu". Does that make any difference? My name in the passport or in certificates is "Prudhvi Raj Kakumanu". So does it make any problem for me during the examination day? please reply me urgently. Thank you

Hi, no need to panic. Middle names or initials do not usually appear on the receipt. However, when you get to the Test center, what you presented will be confirmed on the computer. This information will include all data you filled in the form, middle name inclusive. All the best!

I have applied to six universities and have sent the complete application packet few weeks back. My whole process is complete..just waiting for my TOEFL score. Now for the next 4 to 5 months i am planning to work for a firm. And the firm has told me to apply for a PAN CARD. But, when i recently spoke to an AUDITOR regarding my process, he suggested me not to apply for PAN CARD, it will be a problem when i apply for Student Visa. And the firm will not provide me any work experience certificate for the 4 months. Please suggest me, should i go ahead and apply for PAN CARD & work? What else should i do? Awaiting your reply. Thanks in advance.

    Hello everyone,(Aishwarya)

    I have mainly 2 queries.

Firstly,I am worried about the C.G.P.A can any one shed me light on this?

I am in 3rd year Engineering having 8.6/10 in EE.

Can any one say how much does the CGPA matters in application procedure of colleges?

I am giving GRE in this June , expecting 1350.

I am having certificates of IITH and other colleges for participating in events and fest. Will these help in any way?

I have undergone 3 Industrial trainings.

    What colleges can I expect?

I don't have proper knowledge on weightage of various basis on which student receives an I-20.

Just clarify me the doubt on CGPA.

With 8.6 CGPA.(I "may" reach around 9 at the end of fourth year ).

Will this reduces my chances into getting a good university?

    Here is my second doubt,

On the day of exam we can send our scores to 4 universities for free of cost right?

On what basis can we select them.?

Please guys these doubts prevailing me from many months don't know where to share so emanated here.

Your CGPA is fine ,with a decent gre score you can get into top universities .

      ALL THE BEST

      • Ravi on January 28, 2011 at 8:11 PM

        Thanks a lot karthikeyan.

        What about the university selection?

        • karthikeyan.y on January 29, 2011 at 6:46 AM

Yes Bro after finishing you GRE you will be asked to choose the universities to send the score and you get to choose 4.ETS will send all these scores to the respective universities,be sure to apply to the right department, you are leaving this fall? I too leaving this fall.

          • Ravi on January 29, 2011 at 12:51 PM

I am leaving in next fall.

Hope so you will guide me if I need any help,as you will be experienced by the time I apply for universities.

You are also in same branch?

As you said my CGPA is ok and it wont affect much for applying in top universities I am a bit relaxed.

Thanks for reviving hope again in me!

BTW where can we share our emails ids?

I ain't getting your id over here.

          • Aishwarya on January 29, 2011 at 11:03 PM

            Hey Ravi.

Your CGPA is good, don't worry about that.

Concentrate on GRE and TOEFL. That should be fine.

And you can choose universities soon after your test, you just have to remember the state in which your universities are located.

And all American Universites want GPA, so you can evaluate your GPA from any of the evaluating services like WES.org.

            All the best!!

          • Ravi on January 30, 2011 at 12:20 AM

            Thanks Aishwarya for your words.

I had a rumor that we cant apply to top universities with this CGP.(In your words converted into GPA).

So HSB people and you especially shed light on this.

Thanks a lot for solving each and everyones query.

A reply of yours encourages many students and if we encounter a problem we think HSB is there to solve and especially you and this is not a praise.

Thanks a lot and continue your help.

Thank you for all the information given by you.
I have a couple of questions to ask you.I am an engg grad, passed out in 2004 and have 4 yrs of work exp .Now I am here in US on a H-4 visa and I am planning to study master’s. what are the chances of me getting admitted to a grad school(i know GRE n TOEFL scores are important)? Is the year graduation very important? anyone being in my situation who have got admission to the grad school please reply, it will boost my confidence levels.
    thank you

    • hariharan on January 20, 2011 at 4:40 AM

      The year does n't matter for the US universities. As per the students view they get good exposure to their subjects through the practical experience over there. They'll be more glad to take the students who got work experience. So am sure u will get chances quite higher then the ppls without Work Exp;

and also is it necessary to give toefl also year before applying to universities?

I would like to pursue MS in US in 2013.I have 2 chances now either to take current gre pattern or to take new gre after 2years.But i think that taking current gre now may reduce the chances of getting into good university in 2013 and new pattern might be very difficult to attempt. So i am bit confused when to take GRE??so plz anyone could give a solution to my problem.thaking you

    • HARIHARAN-Back to HS on January 13, 2011 at 6:04 PM

Hi in general u need a time of 8 months to prepare for the GRE entrance exam. U need to spend 5 hours a day till 8 months to score better points.Since the patter is changing in AUGUST.U have oly short time to prepare this will lead u to trouble.Since u are trig to take up in 2013,I suggest u to take solid two years of prep 2011-2012 so that u'll have more confidence iin facing the new GRE so u better take the new gre.VISIT ets.org for further details of new pattern thanks for the patience

      • sravani on January 13, 2011 at 10:58 PM

thankyou hariharan but i have already once taken GRE in october 2010.i got a score of 1290 and not satisfied with the score as i wanted to get into university of texas Austin.so wanted to give a try once again.now i am confused whether to take current gre before 1 august 2011 or new pattern.waiting for ur reply.

        • hariharan on January 20, 2011 at 4:49 AM

No u'll get admission in UNIV OF AUSTIN [DALLAS / at ARLINGTON].Dont take GRE retake one of our user took a retake and scored 60 marks less then which made them to move from 1120 to 1070.So i suggest that be happy with what u have scored and to be frank its really a nice score u'll get into UNIV OF AUSTIN of any two either in DALLAS or in A&M ARLINGTON.Make ur SOP LOR very strong

    Hi

I took my GRE in October & got 1210 score, then applied to the universities & planned to retake the exam in January with the hope to get a better score but unfortunately I got less score (1170) in my second attempt. I have sent my second attempt score to 4 universities after the exam. I want to know whether my previous score i.e, 1210 will automatically be sent to these universities?? And will these university take the best score out of the two or will they average the scores???

    • HARIHARAN-Back to HS on January 13, 2011 at 6:11 PM

No it wot affect.Generally the candidates aren't satisfied with their score's above 1200 they try to retake, they think it as a good procedure but only luck favours u to go above 1200 in second attempt or below 1200. In ur case u got only 40 less than previous one well that wont affect. But the USA UNIVERSITIES WILL BE HAVING UR BOTH THE GRE SCORE.So they wont take it too seriously unless ur score went below 1100. Make ur LOR SOP better so that they get satisfied while u attempt.AND TELL TO UR FRIENDS NOT TO TAKE GRE 2nd TIME ITS HIGHLY RISK

    • siram karthik on January 9, 2011 at 11:13 AM

hi! reporting gre scores to universities is not at all a problem. after the gre exam u can send score to 4 uni. the option will appear on screen after u get ur score. they will provide instructions fr selecting univesities. initially we need to select the state n then all the universities in that state will appear n then we hav to select the course. in case we hav to send additional score card we need to select "order additional score card" option in gre user account…

you should take gre & toefl before Nov 2011.

cant't say about prepn because patten would have changed.

Hi abi me too same am also 3rd year ECE only.Am riting my exam on march 15th and start to apply in NOV.by the end of JULY the pattern is oging to change but u need 6-8 months of hard practise for appearing in GRE. But u should applya year before to the universities so that by nav 2012 u'll be moving after completing the formalities. If u are planning to take the new GRE plan try to give ur best shot by DEC 2012 and start aplying to universities cos they take time to respond to our application so make it comfortable for them and u by applying a year before good luck

New york is a place of medium standard living.I dont have ideas for UNIVERSITIES with 840 as the eligible criteria i'll rather suggest u to retake and get a score of 1100+ .U can get universities but not good as u expect. So its waste trying to get to those universities whihc are not valuable.

DONT MISTAKE ME COS I DONT WANT TO SUGGEST MY VIEWERS WITH LOW UNIVERSITY AS IT IS NOT GOOD FOR UR FUTURE.

        hello!!hariharan….
Its pleasure reading your suggestions to other people…
1st of all i wanna introduce myself.
I’m deepak doing my final year BE presently…i have small and a serious doubt i wanted to ask you..
in my 3rd year BE(6th sem)in field of telecommunication in VTU(vishveshwaraih technological university). unfortunately i got 2 backlogs, till then never in ma life i had never faced failure. i have a great passion of doing my higher studies(MS) in abroad. but now im very much scared that will these backlogs would really hamper ma higher studies?
my score are as shown below….
        10th marks–91%
        12th marks–78%
        BE marks(upto 6th sem)-65.5%
so these are my stats… i want to know that……………….
        1. am i elligible for writting gre?
        2. will i get a good college in abroad especially in us?
3.how much should i score in gre to compensate to get good universities?
4.should i need work experience before doing ms?
im very much scared about my academics. will this seriously affect me in future.
especially will they question about my backlogs?
all these things are going in my mind. but i dont have anyone to answer these question.
so will you plz!!help me out with this??PLZ!!PLZ!!PLZ!!
i need help from you. thanks in advice!

  162. Adarsh on January 4, 2011 at 4:13 PM

I'm studying in 3rd year E&C engineering. I wish to take up GRE sometime in jan of 2012, right after the 7th semester. So i will be writing in the new format. Any guidelines and tips so as to how to prepare from now on? I still have an year which gives me an ample amount of time. Kindly suggest.

    • Adarsh on January 4, 2011 at 4:40 PM

I'd like to add one more thing. I should've passed out by now. Due to some problems i flunked my 2nd year. then had to drop out of college. Then i took re-admission for the same year. So, i will complete my graduation in 6yrs. Will it be a hindrance? My 10th & 12th scores combined is around 81%. And i am hoping i will complete my B.E. with first class. Will the year backs affect in the admission process?

      • HARIHARAN-Back to HS on January 5, 2011 at 4:47 AM

no it wont affect u in anyways uless the univ from whihc u get ur degree makes it an issue. Dont think of those stuffs.u work on the gre of new pattern go to ets.org to get sufficient ideas for ur ew gre program

in the new pattern U"LL BE HAVING ONLY SENTENCE AND RC from VERBAL no synonyms CALC ARE ALLOWED FOR QUANTS[IMAGINE HOW TOUGH IT "LL BE] so just prepare from now on before u make late

Refer the books like BARRONS and few mentioned by HSB thats enough,Work hard and plan the timing .Many of us fail to get good score without using the proper time for practising

      Hi Vamsi

You have to have Passport to take GRE test. No other alternatives.if you don't have passport, get it done at the earliest.
For all the Indian citizens, passport is must to take the test, and only passport is accepted as proof of identity.

    • Aishwarya on December 20, 2010 at 7:13 PM

If you have got an email from USF, then go ahead and apply.
But for your profile, i think it's bit difficult to gain an entry for Phd.
Neverthless, give it a try. No wrong in that. You may get admission.

    • Aishwarya on December 17, 2010 at 9:00 PM

Try to retake your TOEFL and send an email to Dean of Admissions of the universities you have applied saying that you are retaking TOEFL, so that they can keep your application on hold till you get the results.
72 in TOEFL is little bad score and it might effect your admission decision.
I am sure you can improve that score.
      All the best!!!

    • Aishwarya on December 17, 2010 at 10:12 AM

GRE normally takes anywhere between 20-35 days to report the scores to universities and you can see the scores even online at the same time.

Try Texas arlington, MSU, Rutgers, East Stroudsburg, UMC, UMBC…
But I am not sure about your program, I can give advice for CS.
You have to check with the application deadlines and start applying.

    • Aishwarya on December 13, 2010 at 9:22 AM

What do you mean by counselling?

      Are you talking about consultancies?

If so, then don't go with them. Use internet and select good universities.

You have decent scores, don't waste them by going into wrong universities through consultancies.

      Think about it.

      • Aishwarya on December 13, 2010 at 10:25 AM

        How to select University

        1. Choose the part of US you want to go to. Like east, west…

        2. Choose the program

        2. See which university offer that program

        4. Check the university website for the Min TOEFL, GRE scores, if not available, just forget it, because only GRE TOEFL scores are not everything.

        5. Try to find posts by present students in university website.

        6. Compare with your scores

        7. Check scholarship requirements

        8. See the university ranking (lot of websites provide that, just google it)

        9. Now apply to 5-10 universities with difference in ranking. Difference of 200-300.

        10. ITS DONE, you will surely get an admission.

      Is it sudipt? Or Salman?
Even if Salman, I am not interetsed because i am not that Aishwarya.

And yes, you can get admission with that score provided you apply early. Apply to universities which are average ranked. And apply to a couple of good universities. Check the ranking of the universities before you apply.
Make sure your application reaches to three blends of universities.
      Good/Average/Low.
You will be safe if you follow this trend.
      All the best.

    Hello,
I wanted to know that should one include an explanation for low GRE scores in SOP ? I have GRE score well above 1100 and could not retake it because of unavailability of dates and approaching application deadlines ! So, my confusion is does explaining the reason for low GRE score highlight the flaws and risk the chances of acceptance?
Should I include it in my SOP ? The universities i am applying to have not asked for it though !
    Looking forward to upcoming suggestions.

Take TOEFL first and follow that by GRE.

      Don't waste any time now.

      All the best.

im looking to go to us in aug intake.

so when should i start the processing for us?

    • hariharan on December 10, 2010 at 11:26 PM

aug 2011 means u should start the process by nov so that u’ll finish all the details and process,ur visa, so that u’ll be ready TOEFL will take 2-3 months to release the results so u should start the application from jan or feb thats the safe side

      • Aishwarya on December 11, 2010 at 5:56 AM

Hey hariharan, TOEFL takes only 15-20 days to give the results.

And Praneeth, you can start applying to universities, its high time.

Take the tests as soon as possible and keep an eye on the application deadlines of the universities you wish to go for.

AWA holds weightage, but little. As of my knowledge, it should not be a thing to worry as you have good GRE score apart from AWA.

You can get admission. Go ahead..

      • karthik.y on December 13, 2010 at 6:50 PM

    • Aishwarya on December 10, 2010 at 1:40 AM

      Hi

You will surely get I20 from atleast 4 Universities. And all the universities you applied are good ones. So, just keep fingers crossed and wait for the acceptance email. As far as your CGPA is concerned, don't take it seriously, that is not the only thing to decide your admission. Your LORs are good, GRE score is good, rest academics are good.

I don't have information about the specialization you are opting for. I think you done a research on that.

      All the best

      • karthik.y on December 11, 2010 at 3:46 AM

Thank you AISHWARYA .You gave me some hope. But I have some bad news,I think UCF has rejected me,since in "my UCF " it has this "The Admissions Status for this application is: :not admitted", but I did not get any official mail of rejection from UCF as they say it would come. Most dreadful part it was one of my "good chance" Universities. This really worries me.

        • Aishwarya on December 11, 2010 at 9:05 AM

When trying for MS, you have to have a rock solid heart, because the whole process of applying and getting into university is a tedious job.

UCF rejection is not the end of the road, you will surely get a call from other universities, and you can always SWITCH once you are there.

          Just Chill!!

    Hello HSB,
I gave my GRE yesterday and scored 1430 (Q780 V650). Do you think I have a good shot at getting into top colleges with any kind of funding. I have a bachelor's in CS and I am aiming at UT Austin, NCSU, Uni. of Wisconsin Madison, SUNY StonyBrook etc. I would give MIT or Berkeley a try if I can be sure of getting some scholarship along with admission. I have heard from heresay that most of these colleges will require upto ~$30,000 per year and I am highly reluctant to pay that kind of money per year. Please let me know if I it is possible to end up with scholarship at this unis. Thanks and best wishes!
    Siddharth

congrats! Im finding it difficult practising Verbal. Can u please share how did u practise this particular section.

      • Siddharth on December 11, 2010 at 3:37 PM

Thanks! For verbal, I mainly used Baron's and the ETS big book (u can find online pdfs). I guess, the big book is the best resource as there are so many tests in it. After you finish 10 of them you should find a considerable improvement. Also the word lists in Baron is good and I tried my best to finish the entire word list which is insanely long. Hope this helps!
Also, can anyone answer my previous questions. Thanks in advance! 🙂

      Hi

It's not a thing to worry, name change will not effect your application. Go ahead!

You can just write a letter to the universities you apply about the change in the name of university, they will consider it.

      All the best!

  239. pallavi on December 7, 2010 at 5:20 AM

    Hi,

Took gre today and got a score of 1150 (Quant:790 and Verbal: 360).

My 10th percentage is 84% cbse , intermediate 90%. Btech CSE from jntu and the gpa scales t0 3.8/4 (persuing 3rd yr)

Since i have good acad percentages through out– is this gre score enough to get admission into good univs?? I want to know which section is given more weightage – the quant or verbal.. so that i will plan to proceed with the same score (since i scored 790 in quant) or retake the test.

HSB or its fans, please help me!!

    • HSB on December 7, 2010 at 5:31 AM

WE can help with your university selection – http://www.happyschoolsblog.com/pay-fall-2011/

      • Aishwarya on December 7, 2010 at 10:08 AM

Certainly quants will be higher valued while considering for admission, especially for CS students. So, you are on right track.

Just go ahead and apply. Your acads are impressive, try some good university. Apply for a couple of SAFE universities as well.

        All the best!!

    • milo on December 8, 2010 at 1:11 AM

Please what was your strategy with the Quant preparation. I am really finding it tough preparing.

      • pallavi on December 8, 2010 at 12:37 PM

@ aishwarya thanx for the reply. actually i have decided to retake my gre. i have a query in this regard.. if incase my second gre score is less compared to my first one..will the university choose the best one?

        @ milo

for quant i practised gre big book a lot (i repent i dint practise for verbal). the questions are of the same standard as that of the big book. Infact bigbook is the best way to analyse your score because my scores for quant were 750,780,800,800,… and verbal always 380,370,390.. which best reflect my final gre score. Quant is nothing to worry about. Just apply common sense and rely on basic formulaes and you will be through easily.

I wish to do my m.s in the NEW YORK state in computer science stream. Will i be able to get admitted into a good reputed university? Will i be able to get scholarships? 245. rohith on December 6, 2010 at 9:47 AM

    hi

i took gre today and got 1050 (verbal 380 quant 670), i had earlier taken on october 2010 and had got 970 (verbal 230 quant 740) , how universities consider my score now? what universities i can apply with that score?

    • hariharan on December 6, 2010 at 7:27 PM

Its too difficult rohith cos the US universities need 750 in quants an 550 in verbal[550 for whose country language is ENGLISH and 450 whose country language is not ENGLISH].But u got quants good in first attempts and in second attempt u got 380 in verbal most UNIV considers that first score but u improved by 80 and lost in quants.

GET ME THE COURSE which u want to take i'll tell accordingly

      • Aishwarya on December 6, 2010 at 9:03 PM

        Hey Rohith

1050 is more than enough to get an admission, trust me.

And what course are you looking for? What about TOEFL/IELTS?

            1050 is enough for CS.

            No need to retake GRE.

Plz tell abt the new pattern of gre exam 2011, is there any minus marks for wrong questions in gre. Plz give the detailed topics of maths, english in gre exam. Now i am btech 3rd yr is it better to write gre exam in the coming june

    • hariharan on December 6, 2010 at 7:23 PM

No minus mark. But u got RC and SENTENCE COMPLETION question and u have an EXTRA ESSAY WRITING.Calculators are allowed[so think the level of difficulty],u can go back to the questions to make changes[think the level of diff in verbal u'll be confused].MATH remains the same

    • Veer on December 7, 2010 at 7:36 PM

      hi

      Spandana

i would suggest you to go with present gre pattern its better to deal with known devil thn unknown..

      hope you understand

  247. ganesh kumar on December 6, 2010 at 12:37 AM

Hi aishwarya , i am ganesh kumar , doing my B-tech IT (2nd year) and planned of making my first attempt at the end of my third year .Do u think it is right choice to make my first attempt at that time or else to make after completing my UG degree . I wanna to do MS in Computer science or IT in some good universities .Please i wanna u to guide me because i was in the initial stage of preparation. Even now i not comfortable with the way i need to prepare for it. Please help me and guide me.

    • Aishwarya on December 6, 2010 at 8:07 AM

      Hi Ganesh

Interesting to see that you directed your query to me.

And you can take GRE whenever you are comfortable with it, but just make sure that you are confident enough of scoring high You might have come to know from my posts that I scored less in GRE. But I must admit, I did not prepare well.

I am trying for Masters in CS.

And I am always there for the HSB users, will surely assist you.

Before that, can I know your 10th, 12th and UG scores so far?

      • ganesh kumar on December 6, 2010 at 8:34 AM

        Hi aishwarya

Thank you for your reply .Yeah i got 91.45 in 10th and 90.75 in 12th standard and only 75% in UG(upto 3rd sem ) so far and will surely improve to 80 % in the upcoming semesters.Guide me what i need to do now and how to start my preparation.

        • Aishwarya on December 6, 2010 at 7:55 PM

          Hmmm, your scores are impressive!

But I think you have to opt to take GRE only if you have enough preparation time before that, I mean you should be free from your UG tension, because you cannot play with GRE and retaking test would not help much either. You can start your preparation right away, and decide yourself how things turn up.

In which university in India are you pursuing UG?

          • ganesh kumar on December 7, 2010 at 5:58 AM

            Hi aishwarya

I am doing my B-tech IT in sastra university ( tanjore) .I have a query for you.How much importance will be given to my UG percentage while choosing some good universities in USA . Do u think having 80% is enough to get good universities like mitchigan , ohio etc. if i have decent gre score…

          • Aishwarya on December 8, 2010 at 10:28 AM

            Yeah

Anything around 80% is considered good.

And when considering you for admission, university looks for a lot of things.

UG Score, GRE/TOEFL, SOP, LOR, Resume…

You have to get everything right to get into MSU, Ohio.

MSU is a tough ask, for that you have to score around 1350 in your GRE.

            All the best ganesh.

          • ganesh kumar on December 11, 2010 at 6:20 AM

Thank you Aishwarya for your kind reply.yeah i will try my level best to get into MSU,Ohio….If wish would you briefly tell about SOP ,LOR and even tell the score to get into Ohio, which is my favourite University.Thank you so much…

  248. Kiran on December 5, 2010 at 3:13 PM

I recently gave GRE. My score is 1140 (v510, q630). The major reason I scored so low is that I gave just gave 3 weeks to my preparation with absolutely zero practice. Therefore on the exam day, I got stuck on questions and missed out on about 5 questions on both the quant and verbal section.
My advice to fellow GRE takers:
    1. Give minimum 2 months to your prep.
    2. Practice a lot…. very important because with practice you won’t feel nervous on the exam day.
    3. During the GRE, if you get stuck on a question, quickly guess and move on. Time is very precious. Because on the GRE its is more important to answer all questions than leaving them blank. Because this way you increase your chances of getting some correct if not all.

    Hi,

I have got admits from Michigan State University and Polytechnic Institute of NYU for MS in Civil Engineering (Major: Structures). Could you please tell which one of these would be a better option to opt for?

    Thanks.

    • Aishwarya on December 2, 2010 at 9:16 AM

I would suggest you to go with MSU. Are you planning for Spring 2011?

      • Ankur on December 2, 2010 at 9:33 PM

Thanks Aishwarya. Yes, I have applied for the Spring 2011 session. And I forgot to mention that NYU Poly has also offered me a $5000/year scholarship.

Now, which one should I choose also keeping in mind the job perspectives after my graduation.

        • Aishwarya on December 3, 2010 at 6:16 AM

I still believe you should to go with MSU, only because of the job prospects.

MSU is one of the top universities, so you should not have a second thought about joining it.

          All the best!

hi, im abhishek and planning to do M.S. in Energy Systems. i am an Electrical Engineer and i secured 66.9% in B.E., in GRE 1190, verbal 420, Quants 770, in TOEFL iBT 108/120. if any suggestions or instructions can be passed on to me regarding applying and university programs would be very helpful.

  257. Dhriti on December 2, 2010 at 6:55 AM

    Hi HSB,

I am Dhriti and i took gre test last september and got 1140(verbal-400, quant-740). Not being satisfied with the result, i took gre again this november and got 1240( verbal-540, quant-700). Again, I was really shocked to see my results, as i never used to get below 750 in quant. Now, the dilemma is gotten only a little appreciation of scores, will it be futile if i even apply? or i might still have some chances in good universities?I want to apply for fall'11 and most of the deadlines are approaching soon. I am really demoralized with the scores i've got and i don't want to the whole preparation in vain.

My graduation is in biotech engineering and i've pretty decent profile(though without any research papers).

Any suggestion would be a help.

    Regards,

    Dhrti

    • Aishwarya on December 2, 2010 at 7:45 AM

      Hi

1240 is GOOD score. But you want to do Masters or Phd? For Masters 1240 serves the purpose.

Don't think of taking GRE too many times as that might degrade your whole profile. Go ahead with 1240 and apply, you can enter into reasonably good universities with that score. All the best!

  258. Agnit Chatterjee on December 1, 2010 at 4:00 AM

    • Aishwarya on December 1, 2010 at 6:40 AM

For MS in CS, you don't have to take the GRE subject test. General test is the actual requirement, so just concentrate on the general test.

      All the best!

    Hi,

I am planning to take up GRE on dec 12th. As a practice I took up a Kaplan complete test. I scores 750 in quants and 470 in verbal(1220). I guess with some practice for the next 10 days i should be able to score more in verbal. As far as maths is concerned I found certain questions too hard to solve. How would you rate the kaplan tests in terms od difficulty when compared to the real gre test???

  263. Nandan.H.N on November 27, 2010 at 7:13 AM

I had taken up GRE on 15th of November and got a score of 1100(Q:720,V:480). Now,I am planning to write again in January. The main dilemma taunting me is,whether it is worth taking up again or will it be too late? Say if I score 1200 and get my official scores in mid Jan,will it not be too late applying for the universities?Does the score of 1200 make a remarkable difference in getting into good university than applying with a score of 1100? Please Suggest.

    • HSB on November 27, 2010 at 8:04 AM

Start your application process with 1100 and if score goes up then it will good boot.

      • Aishwarya on November 27, 2010 at 8:27 AM

Go ahead with 1100, because only GRE is not everything. You have too many other things to take care of.
Try to get everything else absolutely right by investing more time rather than wasting time on GRE.
        All the best!

    • vaibhav on November 27, 2010 at 9:46 PM

I guess your new GRE score will automatically re reported to the institution after you submit all you documents to the college in which you intend to study, like pay application fees, submit transcript and other supporting documents. now if you are pretty confident, then Re take GRE and tell the institution citing the id issued by the university(to the graduate advisor of your program and to the university admission deptt.) that you have retaken GRE and tell them the score, I know UNIV. will act only when the score from ETS is received at the institution but our email may hold some ground for the time being and it will be good for the record. BTW 480+720 = 1200……..GOOD LUCK

I've been going through all the comments that have been posted about the new GRE test pattern., There have been significant changes in the verbal section.

My doubts are regarding the preparation for the verbal., since lots of RC's have been introduced, is it necessary for me to read through all the word lists that books like BARRONS' give "or" should i rather focus on improving my reading & writing skills..??

AWA is not bad unless u below 3.So dont worry about that normally UNIV refer ur quants where they expect u to get 750+ in math an only 650+ in verbal

    • Aishwarya on November 19, 2010 at 6:27 AM

      Hi

I think its better if you retake your TOEFL, because anything less that 79 in TOEFL will lead to rejections.

Retake the test and try to score above 79 (atleast).

Your experience will certainly count and your GRE score is not bad either.

So only problem is TOEFL score.

      All The Best!!

      • Sarfarajkhan on November 20, 2010 at 2:36 AM

        @ Aishwarya…

        Thanks for your kind suggestion….

yaa.. i also want to enhance my score in TOEFL….

which is too less and specially i got only 8 in listening, so I think I have to practice more for listening…

If i get 80+ in TOEFL, then am i eligible for admission in fall 2011 ??

        • Aishwarya on November 20, 2010 at 10:27 AM

Yes, 80+ in TOEFL will open all the gates for you. All the best.

    2. NJIT

    3. NYIT(Conditional i20)

    4. Wright State University

    5. University of Colorado Denver

    6. Northwestern Polytechnic University

    7. UMASS-lowell

    Reply ASAP.

    • Aishwarya on November 18, 2010 at 7:29 AM

      Congrats Hemal!

May I know what are your credentials?

      GRE TOEFL GPA scores?

Because even I have applied to NJIT,NYIT but yet to receive i20. And I was tensed about that. So, after knowing your scores I can decide my future steps.

      Thanks in advance!!

      • hemal on November 18, 2010 at 9:19 AM

If you want to get into NYIT you need to retake your GRE within the first semester over there and meet their criteria.

        • Aishwarya on November 18, 2010 at 9:50 AM

          Hi hemal.

You mean to say that I will get a conditional admit from NYIT?

And are you really sure that I will get i20 from NJIT? Because as far as CS department is concerned, I have heard that NJIT is better than NYIT. SO I am more interested in NJIT as of now, shall I expect a i20 from NJIT with my profile.

Please help me. Hope I am not asking too many stupid questions. I am really worried regarding this.

          Thanks a lot.

          • Hemal on November 18, 2010 at 6:39 PM

Yep u will get. You should have applied to NPU and Bridgeport also. I would say drop NYIT because Conditional i20 on GRE basis will surely give you sleepless nights.

          • Aishwarya on November 19, 2010 at 6:16 AM

            Hey hemal.

Can you please explain what exactly is CONDITIONAL I20?

I have absolutely no idea about that.

And now I don't have time to apply to any universities as the deadline of all the universities was Oct 15 or Nov 1.

So tell me whether will I get i20 from any of the universities that I have already applied.

            Thanks in advance.

    • hariharan on November 16, 2010 at 8:00 PM

Your gre quants is good. But in verbal normally u'll be having a range of 200 while writing the ACTUAL GRE TEST.Its like they'll give u 400 points at the start of the exam whihc wont be displayed and if u anser the first few questions ur scores would have increased .But thats not gonna help u now.

You can contact to the respective UNIV and u can get n idea of wat they expect from you to make u eligible

      • Aishwarya on November 17, 2010 at 6:31 AM

        Thanks Hariharan!

I would like to see more replies on my Query.

And I would like to thank HSB to come up with a wonderful platform to discuss issues related to foreign education. Thanks HSB.

        • hariharan on November 17, 2010 at 8:01 PM

you are palnning to take your intake on spring of next year rite. so u have lots of time left.Start to discuss with the UNIV professor’s or admission faculty and tell ur criteria they’ll tell whether u are eligible or not.If u still want to get into top UNIV then take ur IELTS witha band of 6.5/9 u’ll get an admission to those univ which you mentioned. And one thing is that fromlast year the US universities started to accpet the IELTS score also .For example MIT univ needs a band of 7 from their applicant to get enrolled as a favoured student. Its all in your ur hand and how fast u make the contact to the university professors.Good luck!!!! do u have the site of the worlds top 100 univ and worlds top 100 latin America/100 top south America /200 top ocianic/100 top in asia if u know these s act wisely while chosing else i’ll tell the site name ALL THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

          • hemal on November 17, 2010 at 9:28 PM

            @ Aishwarya

You have not mentioned your Majors. If you are looking for MS in CS. You will get in NJIT, NYIT has recently upgraded GRE to 1000. You will surely get a conditional i20 from NYIT. I got 920 in GRE. I got admits from WSU, NPU, NJIT,NYIT, UMASS-lowell, UCD, Stevens. Please suggest me which university to choose. for MS in EE.

          • Aishwarya on November 17, 2010 at 9:30 PM

            Thanks again Hariharan.

I am trying for Spring 2011 and there's hardly anytime left, I dont know what made you to say that I have lot of time.

Anyways, I did contact few universities and they said ONLY GRE would not be the deciding factor, so they said they will review my application considering all the aspects of the application.

But all I wanted to know is, are the universities listed by me are suitable for my profile or should Have I tried some other universities with much lower profile?

            Please reply.

Thanks again to Hariharan and HSB!!

          • Aishwarya on November 18, 2010 at 7:47 AM

Hey hemal, I am looking for MS in CS, you guessed it right.

And thanks for your reply, it is giving a lot of confidence to me now.

But you said NYIT is upgraded to 1000 GRE Score. But I dont have that.

Do clarify this, I am really worried about this.

            Thanks

          • hariharan on November 19, 2010 at 1:44 AM

Trying for much lower universities means its not worth u must get into top univ before 15 world ranking as per the status now .Try for medium universities.IELTS was accepted from past year only so they would have not mentioned it to u. M.Sc in CS u can try of NEW JERSY AND NEW YORK UNIV U ARE APPLING?????????????

          • hariharan on November 19, 2010 at 2:16 AM

NJIT needs IELTS of 6.5 or 6.0 and

            NYIT requires 6.0

            LONG ISLAND CW needs 5.5

            MONT CLAIR needs 6.5 ielts

            remaining two dono

approximately if u have these scores in ielts u can apply to those two without GRE scores

          • Aishwarya on November 19, 2010 at 6:20 AM

            Hi Hariharan.

I have already applied to NJIT and NYIT for the Spring 2011 intake. No i20 yet.

And I have taken TOEFL test and scored 83 which is equivalent to IELTS 6.5

So please let me know that will i get i20 or not.

            Thanks

      hi shikhar,

I can say that when compare with your CGPA your GRE is low. I suggest you to retake your GRE after taking your TOEFL. Before that start your process based on existing scores as for high profile students Good colleges are nearby their deadlines for Fall 2011. Few Universities matches your profile are

      University of North Texas

      1. TAMU,Kingsville

      2.Bradley University

      3. San Jose State University

      4. SUNY Buffalo

      5. University of Michigan- Dearborn

      6. University of Missouri- Rolla

      7. Wichita State University

      8. Michigan Tech University

  286. Ram on November 15, 2010 at 7:44 AM

I am aiming for electronics engineering course..will this quans mark n backlogs be a big factor in reducing my chances..am not willing to take gre for the second time..instead i want to spend time on the rest of the process..pls guide…planning to go next year..

    • sridevi on November 15, 2010 at 11:42 PM

600 in quants is not a good score. I strongly suggest you to retake your GRE. you haven't mentioned your UG % and how many backlogs you have and remember backlogs are counted based on the attempts you give in each and every subject.

      • hariharan on November 16, 2010 at 8:02 PM

But make a point u score more than 750+ in retake gre cos the univ will have ur last gre score and ur new gre score so take a good step before getting into another one

  287. Ajinkya on November 15, 2010 at 3:48 AM

    Sir plz guide me out…. 2day i took my GRE where i screwed up… I scored 730(Q= 440 and V=290)….
Is there any chances to get an admit from these univ…
    Florida State University, Florida
    California Sate University, Fullerton
    SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, NY

Should i take the GRE once again??? or should apply for other universities….

    • Aishwarya on November 15, 2010 at 8:29 AM

With the GRE scores you have, its tough to get admission in any of the three universities you mentioned. Try for some other universities with low profile, or take GRE test again if you want admission in these universities.

      All the Best!!

      • Ajinkya on November 21, 2010 at 3:08 AM

Thanku Aish… Its was pleasure to have a reply on it…

    • ssm on November 15, 2010 at 8:37 AM

of course u should retake GRE.

    • shikhar srivastava on November 15, 2010 at 8:39 AM

ya dude . u should definitely take up gre once again because 900 is the minimum score any university accepts for ms programs.. dont think .. just reappear with little more preparation and you will easily score above 1100

    • hariharan on November 16, 2010 at 8:06 PM

rather then u can take IELTS. cos florida univ accepts IELTS of a band of 6.5/9 as their eligibilty criteria.Retaking GRE is not a big matter make sure that u reach around 1150+.because while applying the ETS will send ur previous GRE scores and ur CURRENT score. If u get around 1050-1100 its quite ok but the expect a good change in the score from the retaking students

      • Ajinkya on November 21, 2010 at 3:08 AM

Thanku… Its was pleasure to have a reply on it…

  288. Ram on November 15, 2010 at 12:58 AM

quans i aimed for 700..i had backlogs in UG…will this mark be enough..planning to go next year…

    • hariharan on November 16, 2010 at 8:03 PM

yeah dude score is valid for five years r8.So u can clear ur backlogs and can apply. the univ aims that u should not have any backlogs while appying

      • Ram on November 18, 2010 at 11:08 AM

To Hariharan..Now i cleared all my papers..passed out..am aiming for medium profile universities only will marks be fine for that…??i guess i dont have time to retake GRE…going to take toefl at the end of this month…

        • hariharan on November 19, 2010 at 2:21 AM

thats fine GRE is no matter 1100+ has always been a good score.Take the TOFEL. but i would rather suggest to take IELTS cos even the top univ MIT,STANFORD,UNIV OF FLORIDA,INDIANA,MICHIGAN STATE all are accepting IELTS from last year it would be easy to get admitted to any these but GRE+TOFEL is the entry for few UNIV in this IELTS alone standes they'll need a suplementry gre in whihc u need to be 1000+ but u got 1100+ its good do the TOFEL well and let me know

          • Ram on November 19, 2010 at 10:14 AM

    • hariharan on November 17, 2010 at 10:55 PM

SOP is what your coll professors write about ur academics performance.and how well u r brought in their guidance will u be able to develop yourself in their univ after joing. You should have a talk with this to ur professor hu rites ur SOP.Make a point that professord/HOD's SOP are more valued then lectures

  290. Sagar , on November 13, 2010 at 11:24 PM

    does experience count in admission?

i have 1 yr exp. in mechanical design(by admission it will be 2yrs) and i want to pursue MS in design field

my gre score is 1070(Q-750 v-320) want to go in fall next yr. and a low gpa should i repeat the gre or not?

    • Nikhil on November 17, 2010 at 7:07 AM

Yes, experience does count towards admission. Main emphasis is on ability to do academic course work which is reflected by GPA. But significant job experience can help you get admission.

About GRE score, depends on the universities you are planning to go to.

      Good Luck!

Ur 7th and 8th sem will be too easy so work hard on those two sems and improve above 8.By the way 3456 sem are hard. So try not to have any backlogs and one more thing is start preparing from dec

If u had improved your GRE score 300-500 from the past its well and good. if not only a small improvement you can try contacting the respective univ faculties to get cleared.Rather than waiting for someone to guide you,its well and good if u make a step.So search the univ and then contact them they'll let u know abt the details.U have 80-90% of getting admission GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Computer science has a lot of demand for masters.your gre score is a bit low.you could give it a shot again and take your quants score above 700.are you still a student or a pass out?

  302. chandu on November 4, 2010 at 7:44 PM

    hi,

I am doing my final year and to pass out in may 2011. I had 5 backlogs in my 5th semester and it was due to my health conditions and during my 6th semester i cleared all except 1 and that i’ll clear this semester examinations to be held in dec. I have an aggregate of 70 and 5 research papers to my credit. I’m taking up gre in dec and plan to apply for univ that has deadlines before 31st of dec and jan 15. the transcripts i would apply for will reflect that standing arrear. What do i do about this? because, many universities that i’m aiming which is in top 50 close down by then. what do i do?

    your suggestions

      hi narys…

gre score depends on which university u planned 2 enroll… normally 1100 is good for most universities.. u should take gre by feb and toefl by march.. coz the eariler u start it will be easier for u … for additional information refer gre99.com

I just finished applying to graduate schools for accelerated masters in nursing programs. I will graduate in the spring with a degree in Biology. I unhappy with how I did on my GRE. I got a 450 on Verbal, 690 on Quantitative, and 4.5 on Writing. I do not have time to retake it before all of my applications are due. I have a 3.7 GPA though.

    Dear Raman,
You are not the one, hundreds of students get cheated for the fee with Williams College in London.
They employ sweet speaking people on commission basis to lure innocent people through agents, those agents who keep the draft with them get the refund and those who forward to them never get it back.
I am also one of them and know three more people from my area,
Never ever apply for Williams College in London,

      Hi Kaushik.

I think with 880, university of Houston could be difficult. Better apply for low-profile/low-standard universities. Are you trying for Spring'11?

And what is your TOEFL score?

And which other universities are in your mind?

I am just beginning the process of preparing applications for graduate schools. I understand we have to submit an official transcripts from undergraduate institutions. What about high schools? Do they accept photocopy of high school marksheet.

i got 1260 (q-770 and v-490).I am thinking to apply for spring 2012. Is there any chances to get into UO Arizona,UO Minnesota,UO Texas? The number of admissions in spring are less than fall, why is it so? Is the availability of seats less in spring? Which will be the best option for me? Now, means in month of November i am busy with my Engg. major exam and i have not given TOEFL. So, i am planning to go for TOEFL in January. Is my decision right? I am from a very small town in Maharashatra where people don't know what GRE is. So the internet is only option for me. Please do replay!

I am Jaskamal Singh and I am really delighted to see HSB. Before i ask anything i would like thank the creators of this wonderful site for the services they are offering.THANK YOU.

NOW THIS IS WHERE I NEED YOUR HELP

I have recently [AUG 2010] completed my B.E in Computer Science from PUNE UNIVERSITY.What I have realized is,this University is a “Bit Stingy” in shelling out marks as compared to North Indian Universities.

    So here is My Profile

    10th (CBSE): 83%

    12th (CBSE): 77%

    University Aggregate: 56.5%(Higher secondary = 55+)

    Final Year Aggregate: 64.3%(First Class = 60+)

    GRE:1430

    TOEFL:90+ (Not given yet)

** My Final year project stood first in College.

*I have have also worked on 6 to 8 more Projects in College

Now i want to do MS is Information Assurance/Information Security and join by fall 2011.

And these are the colleges i have shortlisted with my limited knowledge, which provide this course.

    1>Georgia tech

    2>Northeastern University

    3>George Mason

    4>New jersey Institute of technology

    5>Steven’s Institute of Tech

    6>University of California -Santa Cruz

    7>Rochester’s Institute of technology

    8>North Carolina State university-Raleigh

??? Now I would like to know about my chances of getting into these Universities with or without funding. Please suggest some if you know. ???

I would be grateful if you guys help me out here and I would definitely be joining your lot if i reach there.

    Thank You

    • HSB on October 25, 2010 at 8:02 AM

Schools you have listed for your profile doesn't seem to be fit. You have 1430 and you can still look for better schools.

FYI – Univ of Central Florida and UTA have good research/funding for Information Security.

If you are from India then why don't you start practicing from 9th and 10th standard books first? Rather than jumping to GRE quant questions, try basic concepts first. Also you might consider joining some GRE coaching. Still I will advise you to practice basic even before joining coaching. From my own personal experience even coaching people do not dedicate much time to basics.

  337. Shruti on October 21, 2010 at 11:45 AM

    Hi,

I took gre today with a disappointing verbal score 460(Q-800). i had gone through all the 3.5 k barron words but i couldn't revise them thoroughly, also i was having problem with time managing with the RC. So what should i do for getting 700+ in verbal in my 2nd try and how much time should i keep for my next attempt.

    • Arun on October 21, 2010 at 5:39 PM

if u r planning to score above 700.. then probably it would take another 45 days or so.. Revise the word list twice before the exam..and as for the RC, try to practice a lot.. that should do it.. Take a lot of practice tests..

      • Shruti on October 22, 2010 at 1:41 AM

        thanks for the reply

Also apart from barron's will kaplan give some added advantage ?

        • Arun on October 22, 2010 at 5:17 PM

for vocabulary barron's will suffice.. I dont think you have to use kaplan.. I scored 660 in verbal using barron's book .. If u have time, try kaplan verbal work book and big book.. And by the way, why do u wish to score 700+ in verbal?? doing Phd or Ms??

hmm i'm looking for ms. i wan't to increase my verbal level 700+ so that even in worst case my score doesn't fall below 1450. 😛

BTW i have heard from many high scorers that practicing from kaplan really helps.

          • Arun on October 23, 2010 at 7:22 AM

aiming for Ivy league colleges huh??:) Swell!! yeah you can practice from kaplan too.. Practice as much as you can..

BTW have you already joined any university or applying for next fall 11.

Hi guys, I gave my GRE on 20 OCT. My scores are Q-650, V-230, AWA-Waiting. I have already applies for NJIT, Long Island, West Chester. Can I expect I20 with these scores? My TOEFL iBT score is 81. I am looking for MS Computer Science. My BTech percentage is 65.
Also can you suggest me with few more universities which can entertain these scores!

  339. rohith on October 21, 2010 at 8:16 AM

hello……how can we improve our verbal scores? do you have any good idea?

    • Abhijeet Singh on October 21, 2010 at 9:56 AM

Mug word list. There is no other shortcut. You will see a lot of difference in your scores.

    • Shruti on October 21, 2010 at 3:50 PM

what is your current scoring range and what are your weak areas?

      • rohith on October 21, 2010 at 10:01 PM

my current score in verbal is 230, weak in RC,sentence completion

        • HARIHARAN on November 20, 2010 at 8:13 PM

          RC no other go practice a lot for skimming there are two sites where the ETS pick up the sentences for RC and Sentecne Completetion u have to read all the article in HSB so that u'll get an idea;

          SENTENCE COMPLETION;

Dont look into the answer and start picking up those choices and place it in the blanks and which ever choices match it will be perferct. This is the worg first read the given sentence and write the answer which matches those answer.Pick the rite synonyms for that i got 230 in verbal during my diagnostic test after following this i got 410 now working on RC.

  340. Vishwa on October 21, 2010 at 8:03 AM

Hello Sir, I recently took my GRE exam. I got 1100 score, but 670 in quants and 430 in verbal. I wasted lot of time in doing D.I question, as a result I marked all together 8 questions without solving in 3 minutes. Though my friends said it a good score, I m not satisfied with quants' score. More over I dont have time to retake the test. I m having a doubt whether I get admission in good University with such a poor quants score… If so plz suggest me the universities..

    I have following percentages @school = 80% @inter= 77.5% @engg.= expected 63-65% by the end of the course………….

    thankq very much in advance…..

    • HSB on October 21, 2010 at 12:33 PM

2 Things here. 1) If you get high score, you will have admit from better school. 2) Its your life/career so you have to decide if you want to hustle to find time and retake GRE or apply with same score.

      HSB DOESN’T give university suggestions.

      • Vishwa on October 21, 2010 at 9:50 AM

Thanks for the reply sir. Sir but I cannt understand what you have said. Do mean that I got good score and I should continue applying good Universities..??

Sir plz suggest me whether i should continue or not with this score.???

        • sridevi on October 22, 2010 at 12:03 AM

          hi Vishwa,

Based on your profile if you can retake your GRE You can get admit from better schools. but you haven't mentioned for which semester you want to apply. If you are planning for Fall 2011 then Plan to take your TOEFL first and start your application process, and then plan to retake your GRE.

  341. Anitha on October 21, 2010 at 7:17 AM

    Hi,

I took up GRE on october 20,2010 i scored 1080, math-510 and verbal- 570. I had already attempted GRE in october 2009 and scored 1100, math-740 and verbal- 360. Due to lack of proper preparations for the quants section, I could nt perform well. I am planning to pursue a Masters in Management Information Systems. I have looked into certain Universities and none of them have a deadline before jan 7,2011 for fall 2011 admissions. I m already done with my IELTS with a band score of 7.5. Keeping this in mind I have planned to take up GRE again by december 1 st week. Is it advisable to take the test again in december 2010?? I would also like know whether it is too late or should I take it by November 2010 last week it self. Please let me know a good preparation guide for the quants section bearing in mind that the difficulty level of the section has raised in recent times.

    • sujith on October 23, 2010 at 8:04 AM

first off, because the deadline is January, u should not delay taking the test any longer. and i don't see much of a difference between december 1st week and november last week. so stick to December, it will at least give you a little more time to prepare.
and you are right about the increase in the quants difficulty level. i suggest you look beyond barrons for quant, as the problems in that are very basic and fundamental. try this book- quantitave aptidude by R.S.Agarwal… you can also go through some materials from Dr.Raju's institute if you can access them as the quant level in that is very high and will prepare you well. in other cases Visu institute material will serve the cause well too..

      • Anitha on October 24, 2010 at 2:38 AM

Thank you Sujith for ur help.. i m planning to have a look at some CAT materials and apart from that as you said Dr.Raju's database and Nova.. will these suffice? and i m lacking time management when it comes to verbal section.. can u suggest how i could i improve ?

        • sujith on October 25, 2010 at 8:21 AM

Nova is a good book, but very slightly on the easier side, so dont get fooled if you solve everything withouth breaking a sweat. look out for tougher ones too.. u probably wont need CAT materials at all, but hey, a bit of extra knowledge never harmed anyone rt? so that is upto you.. and yes it will suffice.

coming to the verbal, the major part where you need to strategize will be the RCs. that is the most time consuming part. now there are 2 or 3 ways to tackle an RC. i have tried all this for my preparation and i got a good idea of it. further my verbal score is 720, so maybe you can go by my word.

1st- read the whole passage at a stretch, trying to imbibe as much of it as possible in a single read. then take on the questions and refer to the passage whenever needed.

2nd- read the question first, look for an indication as to which passage it might be in and then skim that passage for the answer. go on this way for the rest of the questions.

3rd- read the first and last lines of every paragraph in the RC to get an idea of what is where. then take on the questions and get to the passage for every question.

now what u can do, is try 6 verbal model papers, 2 for every strategy and see which works better for you. i suggest u stick to the 1st method, i did atleast , it saves most time and its very efficient if you are going for a high score. if you just want to manage to get past RCs and if you think its beyond you, then go for the 2nd or 3rd. but dont trust me on this, try them all yourself, you will find out if im correct. good luck anitha and tell me what works out for you.. hope this helps..

          • Anitha on October 27, 2010 at 5:00 PM

Thank u sujith.. will let u know how they work out..

          • Anitha on October 28, 2010 at 6:49 AM

And one more thing, I am confused whether to start the application process and then retake gre or to retake gre during the first week of december and then start with the application process.. As I already said I have already taken up IELTS and none of the deadlines fall before december 20,2010. Pls help me decide !!!!

    Dear HSB,

Regarding SOP, Is it a good idea to start with quotation or a citation ? Does it add value to SOP ? I know one's sop have to be genuine and represent his own ideas, thoughts and interests .. but I noticed many templates for SOP starts with quotes and adages that's why am inquiring .. I appreciate your guidance about that point

    Best Regards

    • hariharan on November 17, 2010 at 11:10 PM

apply for the fall that would be better retaking gre is quite difficult they expect u to improve 300-500 in your score if its possible u can take gre again.I would suggest you to start appling for fall of 2011.Scholarships are available depending on the UNIV that u apply

    • HARIHARAN on November 20, 2010 at 8:22 PM

thats not the fact rem if u take gre ur scores may go low.We cant expect that we'll improve.Apply with ur scores there is nothing suggested by the univ that the students are eligible only with a quants of 720+

hi im anusha.i am planning to take my gre on this dec. i didnt start anything about it. does this 2 months of prepartion is enough to get a decent score 0f 1100?i want to do MS in CS. so plz advice me whether the time for prepartion is enough or should i write on jan.

    thanks

    • Arun on October 22, 2010 at 5:27 PM

two months is enough if u r strong in quants.. which semester are u applying for?? for fall 2011, jan is a little bit late i guess..

    • hariharan on November 17, 2010 at 11:14 PM

the pattern remains unchanged till august. Two months would not surely help u to reach 1100.The fact is if u r too strong in quants u can get 800 but in verbal it depends how far u are used to the language.I would suggest that if u are in 4th year take ur GRE on feb or march as soon u finish your test start the process for fall SEPT/NOV/Jan. Be well prepared before u take up

I need serious help. I am applying for MS in Comp Sci for Fall 2011 and currently 4th year Computer Science B TECH student. I have scored low on GRE verbal , my score is Maths: 740 , Verbal : 370.

Now the complexity in my case is, I have strong credentials : 6 International Publications, 2 International Certifications, 79% GPA.

I don't want to compromise on the quality of university and aiming for Cornell and UIUC.

Is it practically possible to get in these university with this score and strong credentials, SOP and recommendation letters ? Will they discount it with verbal?

    Please help!!!

    • Abhijeet Singh on October 10, 2010 at 4:48 AM

Hey buddy don't mind but even your quant score is also very less. 740 is not a great score from any angle. I think it's better to retake your GRE as you have very strong credentials in other cases. The universities you mentioned wont even accept your GRE score; forget about considering your profile. The scores in both sections are too low.

      • Siddharth Gupta on October 10, 2010 at 7:27 AM

Hey dude. Thanks for the reply. But I think UIUC and Cornell are non GRE centric universities, as far as I know UIUC doesn't even require GRE score, and moreover I don't think retaking the GRE test is possible as there are no available dates till Dec end, and the universities deadline is mid december.

        • Kaveri on October 10, 2010 at 8:36 AM

In my opinion, the best thing would be to check out the professors of that university and send them mails telling about your academics and GRE score. If you have your International Publications related to the same field, they might consider you even with you present score. If you get some positive reply, its worth giving a shot and apply to your dream university.

            Hi! Deepti,
Thank you for considering me for suggestions. However, I cannot provide detailed information through this message.
GRE test is for engineering and some other fields, depending on the universities' requirement. If you wish you pursue MS or Ph.D. in your EC, you will have to write the GRE General Test. If you are interested in further studies you can go to- http://www.happyschoolsblog.com/graduate-school-a
This will help you decide, which test you need to write.
For more information on GRE test, you can check out- http://www.ets.org/gre

I hope you find the information useful.
