Is It Ok to Accept Multiple I20 From Universities?

Question about receiving more than one I-20

So far i have got more than one offer from the several university of USA. So that i have been thinking to accept more than one university’s offer and envisaged to get more than one I-20. After then i will choose the best one to which i want to go. Hence i want to know will it be ok to get multiple I-20? Will it make any hamper in order to get visa or further procedure?

Accept More than One I-20?

So far you’re like 10th person to ask the same question in last few days.

You can accept multiple I-20’s  from different universities.

If university is asking for deposit to send I-20 , I will be  skeptical to select that university.

If in case you don’t have other admit then you are forced to pay the deposit nd get the I20.

If you get admission from better university later, then don’t hesitate to select that university. Don’t try to be smart and save $200 or $500.

University know if you pay for I-20 most likely you are going to attend that school.  That’s a marketing tactic (or tap), but dont fall for it.

Update

After reading the comments, looks like students are misinformed and think its MAJOR Mistake to have more than one I-20.

Here is the actual sentences from ICE.gov (Official Agency responsible for Issuing I-20)

Once you are accepted to an SEVP-certified school, your school will give you a document called a Form I-20.  The Form I-20 is a paper record of your information in our database called SEVIS. Each school that accepts you will mail you a Form I-20.  Before you apply for your visa, you must select one school’s Form I-20.

Check your Form I-20 against your passport information to make sure that your name and date of birth (DOB) are correctly listed and spelled.  If it is not correct, contact the school official who sent you the Form 1-20.

I am forced to leave the country at the earliest. I had sent my passport with all the documents required to VFS Global, which was received by them, on the 30th of May 2012 through FedEx. After about 4 weeks (06/27/2012), it was sent back without any renewal done with a justification of insufficient documentation.

When the documents were sent to VFS Global, the Passport and the I-20 were both valid. The passport expired on the 9th of June 2012 and the I-20 expired on 25th of June 2012. The passport was not submitted for the I-20 renewal on time (06/24/2012) as it was in custody of the passport authorities for renewal. So, the school has currently asked me to leave the country without finishing my training. Kindly note, that I have only three weeks remaining to complete my training. I have spent over so much and today I have to leave empty handed.

I have resent my passport for renewal opting for the Tatkal Service. I want to finish my course and go home what can I do …. and how can I get my i 20 extended just for 3 weeks . I am currently still In USA …. Please Help me

I am an undergraduate on chemical engineering with cgpa 2.74/4. My gre score was 1260 (q750, v510, awa 3.5) and toefl 109(r28,l 30, s 23, w 28). I applied to 4 universities but got admission from only of them without funds for phd. A humble request to the members to suggest me a few universities where I could get phd admission with funding.

    Hi,
I have got an admit from an university in USA. I had wrote emails to profs asking them if I could work under their guidance. The deadline for submitting financial documents for I-20 is July 1st week. But I am planning to send it by June 2nd week. So, I have following queries:
    1. If I send my financial documents late and so will be my I-20, then will a Ra post that was meant to be allotted to me be given to another student who got I-20 earlier?
    2. Also, does the Ra offer will be made through the I-20 letter, or can an university decide to give RA intimation to a student even before he submits the financial documents?

It is ok to accept I-20 from multiple universities. But in case of accepting TA / RA offer from multiple universities, you have to be careful. According to the rule of “Council of Graduate Schools”, if you already have accepted TA/RA offer from one university, you have to cancel it before accepting another offer. There is a document titled “Resolution Regarding Graduate Scholars, Fellows, Trainees and Assistants” which clearly mentions this fact. You can get the document by googling.

They have stated that because your RA/TA can be be given to others.

Hi, One additonal piece of info which is left out. If you are getting funding and if you have already given the acceptance, you cannot accept another I 20 from another university without the concurrence of the first university. This is applicable for the acceptances given upto Apl 15th. (Apl 15th is the cut off date). This rule is in force as per the understanding between the universities and pl check up the following link:
    http://www.cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGS_Resolution.pdf
Hence the response would be different for those with assistantship and those without.

    regards

Resolution is something you and I agree to do something. Its not a LAW. You can get multiple I-20’s with RA and TA. But, inform university if you have accepted one offer and got visa. So, the money given to you can can be allocated to different student.

CGS is not a government organization.

      • Krishnan on May 5, 2012 at 2:04 AM

Hi, Kindly check up the point regarding the cut off date of Apl 15th ( National Signing Day ). If a person has already given the acceptance to one university and got his I 20, if he gives acceptance to another after Apl 15th, he is courting trouble. While I agree that CGS is not a govt organisation, the fact that if the former university comes to know abt the latter acceptance, can create trouble and Immigration Services would not be pleased. Better to play safe in a foreign land. If the student is particular abt the II acceptance, he can very well write to the first one, get their concurrence and accept the second one. I prefer this safe and conservative route.

        regards

        Krishnan

You are absolutely incorrect. Where do you get such info?

          • Krishnan on May 6, 2012 at 12:22 PM

You chose to pass judgement on my comment without perhaps going through the entire material I had placed before you. Pl once again carefully check what is given in the link I had provided along with my mail. If the prospective student is adventurous and is prepared to face any problem, ignoring the CGS resolution, I wish him the best and follow your advice. I was under the impression that HSB advises prospective students in a conservative manner without asking them to take undue risks in their career/studies. On seeing your response, I may have to revise my opinion.

          • HSB on May 6, 2012 at 1:05 PM

I20 is a document tht confirms your admission. CGS doesn’t issue i20.

There is nothing conservative about receiving i20 and risk is getting multiple i20.

I have updated the post with link to SEVIS. Don’t believe in some random sites and resolution.
