How to Use Facebook for Job Search

Majority of HSB visitors have accounts in one or more of the major social media sites, including Orkut, Facebook, Twitter, Hi5, LinkedIn, among others.

However, only a few actually use these online platforms for job search purposes or at least know how to use them to look for employment.

In this article you will learn how to use Facebook (which has 350 million users worldwide) for job search. You have to remember that job search using Facebook is not a pill that will give instant relief.

If you are going to graduate in May, don’t expect to get results by using Facebook by May or June. You have to stay using the steps listed below for at least 1 year before that.

Building a professional network is time-consuming and a continuous process. Now, let’s get started.

Job Search Using Facebook

Just follow the steps below to build your professional network using Facebook and use that network for job search.

  1. Create a Facebook Account. (If you are not interested to create an FB account, please stop reading this article now.)
  2. Update your profile with a good / decent photo.
  3. Search for groups in your area of job search.
  4. Join those groups.
  5. Participate in the group discussions (create a wall post, reply to existing threads, etc.)
  6. Basically, announce your presence.
  7. Add people who take part in your discussions.
  8. Start talking to group members and build relationships with them.
  9. Go back to Step 3 and start all over again with a different group.

The above 8 steps sound very simple, but they will surely help you build a professional network. If you have a good network, then finding jobs is very easy.

All you have to do is ask for any available jobs from your network of friends when you start your job search.

If you are going to write a comment to this article with questions like this, please don’t:

That’s good, I joined a group, but what should I post in the wall.
Or, I have added few friends, how do I start talking to them and build relationships?

Answer

Remember that you are in a grad school in the U.S. If you are not sure how to introduce yourself to a group of members within a Facebook group, the you have to do some serious training to improve your self-image and interpersonal skills or else you are going to learn the hard way.

The Hard Way – With your resumé, you might get a job interview, but if you don’t have good inter-personal skills and people skills, it will be tough to get the job.

Everything is interrelated when you’re searching for jobs: the way you speak, your writing style, behavior in online social media, networking events, etc. You have to build and create a brand for yourself.

This brand should be something unique to you. With this, you have to know how to express and market your brand.
