TOEFL Prep Tips to Score 90+

Following TOEFL Experience was shared by Aditya.

Hi, friends toefl is a very easy exam compared to GRE.

Simple trick (if gre = 1000 then toefl >= 90) can be achieved easily.

I just prepared for 14 days and got the score : 90 (r-21,l-21,s-23,w-25)

{my gre was :1000,awa:3}

Actually TOEFL consists of varying reading and listening sections (i.E if reading section is small then listening section will be large, viceversa )

I got smaller reading section and listening section longer!

But, your entire longer section is not considered for grading only certain questions are taken into account as you don’t know those pearls you have to do your entire longer section as well as you can.

TOEFL Prep software

Practice test are very important than preparation for toefl.

Atleast do 10 practice tests before u appear to your toefl

Both in practice mode and test mode preparation. Practice mode makes you know your mistakes while taking test itself which is the best method for initial test atleast 4 tests.

Softwares used :

  • Cambridge preparation for toefl
  • Kaplan’s toefl ibt
  • Barrons toefl ibt

2 weeks of intensive prep from the above book and those software’s are enough to score more than 90.(90+) .

I took my exam at Prometric, banjara hills, Hyderabad.

TOEFL Test Center Experience

It was rocking experience, I reached the center prior to the test time, was watching girls coming to the test center. Actually I was waiting for my friend who was about to come as he too was writing toefl with me.

Meanwhile the prometric authorities behaved as if president obama were to visit the test site. Their rules ..My god.

Slowly after the verification process we were directed to different floors where lockers were present, we were made to leave all things there except passport, pant and shirt.

As i arrived to the test center on my bike I was shivering bcoz of the chilly weather and the ac of prometric.

I was hugging my friend as he was very warm . Surrounding girls looked asif we were abhishek and john in dostana but I didn’t bother asIi was there for my exam not for their impression .

Now its our turn, not only us but every one there were shivering  and to our excitement some girls were ordered to leave their top jackets/jarkins which made them even exposed to the cold.

Thanks to prometric. Becoz these girls were dressed as if they were to a pub not to their TOEFL.

I think it was rigorous for them with sleeveless tops, added with dropping ac ‘s temperatures of prometric.

Finally as we were seated I was adapted to the condition and later prometric authorities switched off ac’s after 1 hr .

Finally within no time i completed reading/listening sections and went out for washroom as there was 10 min break.

And i found my friend in the washroom were sharing our experience of 1 st two sections and were moving through a hall meanwhile prometric authorities approached us and ordered not to talk in the hall..Ohhh…may be obama resting adjacent to us .. I thought!!!!

Then we approached to our test cabin where we were once again ordered to pull out our pockets ,verified passport and were allowed to take our seat. Then, a person came and secretly typed a password for accessing next 2 sections.

By the time I returned from the washroom I got replaced my pencils with new ones but not my booklet.

I called him and asked him of a new booklet as the speaking, writing sections demand more notes than the earlier sections.

I have done one mistake –i completed all sides of my previous booklet with notes but left only 1 empty side i.E. The last side of booklet and that fellow wants me to complete that single side inorder to hand me a new booklet.

I paid 165$ for my toefl, and he refused to hand me a new one as if i was asking his assets .

It was a serious distraction for me before my next part of the test..

Think when do you get time during speaking section to call him and ask a booklet?

Every second we should pay attention to either taking notes from lectures or preparing notes in order to speak.

So I was greatly disappointed by that incident .I was left with 3 minutes to begin my speaking section.

Ultimately i filled to his satisfaction the last side of that booklet and quickly called him and grabbed newer one during the 3rd part of speaking section.

Speaking Section

Secondly as i was about to start my speaking section after the above conversation with the test invigilator I saw my surrounding people just entering after their break and were left with 5 min of break inorder to start their speaking sections.

As i was first seated to start test i completed the 1sthalf early than others and so i was the 1st to start my speaking section.

I was little bit tensed as everyone was concentrating on me as my speaking test started first. They were eager to listen to my responses and the questions which i got.

This was the reason bcoz of which my speaking section was not up to my mark in my view eventhough i got 23.

Meanwhile others too one after the other completed their break time and started speaking .

Break time of 10 minutes should expire inorder to start speaking section u cannot skip the break in middle.

Finally, I completed my speaking with more accuracy as others were too indulged in their test ..I noticed what i read in a blog and its true:: questions are same for all test takers in speaking section but might be in different order.

Later I was directed by my pc to writing section and did that very excellent ..And to my satisfaction i was awarded 25 for that.

Soon the test was completed and we were back to our lockers grabbed our things and were sharing our experiences ..

Soon i switched my cell on and got a message from google that obama was in USA. I don’t know why these people acted as if he was resting in prometric premises.

That’s my experience about toefl.

TOEFL Score Reporting

On the 8th day from your test date your scores will be reported not to your mail but to your toefl registration site.

TOEFL Tips

  • don’t forget your toefl id and password which you used to register for test
  • arrive to the toefl with clothes which could protect you from cool air conditioners
  • please, fill the last side of your 1st booklet inorder to get it replaced with new ones.Otherwise you will not be given new booklet during 10 min break and u have to waste your valuable time during next part of test asking for booklet..
  • if you feel your 1st booklet isn’t enough for you to use for later sections and you were left with some pages empty…at least fill some rubbish to get it replaced.

All the best to your toefl exam.

I edited above TOEFL experience to fix a common error.

  • You – Finally ,I completed my speaking with more accuracy as others were too indulged in their test .
  • Correct – Finally, I completed my speaking with more accuracy as others were too indulged in their test.

Comma should be immediately right after the word. Then leave a space for next word.

You had word space comma then word. Probably this error could have cost you few points in writing section (as well as in AWA).

Other Errors

  • obama should be Mr.Obama or President Obama
  • i should always be I
  • toefl should be TOEFL

You might have not made those mistakes in the actual test, but I observed those in your article.

  1. Hi,

I got 101 after 2 weeks of practise and the score seems less to me. Each and everyone of us has the capacity to score above 110. Please put in more time for TOEFL.

The universities wont compare your score against the time you have studied. They would only judge you by the score… So giv ur best shot preparing it. TOEFL is a piece of cake…No doubt abt it…….

  2. Thanks buddy…
But can you please tell me that can we give IELTS instead of TOEFL?? and With 1040 score (300 in verbal and 740 in quant and AWA 3.5) in GRE, can i get admission in any of the US university??
Do you have any idea?? Pleaase help me….

    1. Hi Ramandeep,

It depends on which Univ prefers which TEST… Mostly all US univ i have applied to want TOEFL score…..

Let me tell you..GRE is not the only criteria while selecting students. They want students who has good acads, Paper presentations, extra curricular activities, IEEE events and rest of those stuff.. GRE and TOEFL score would surely help..but that is not the only criteria.. I hope you get my point…

      Best luck dude……

  3. Nice post Aditya. Here, I would just like to alert everyone, who are going to give their exams in the Prometric centers in India, that if you are not used to living in ACs, then you’ll definitely feel cold during the exam. So just be prepared for this.

  4. Thanks buddy for posting your experience with 90 score in TOEFL. You experience all these silly things in India but don’t worry here in US also the same condition is there. The only main difference is in US is that staff at Prometric Center is really very helpful and polite. But here most irritating part was the Chinese students who were with me in center for test and they were so loud that as if that is their last time they are able to speak loudly and they were going their best. I can say this because I have given TOEFL in India as well and I had exactly the same experience like you. Your post give me strength to post any experience related to academics as well as personal experience which will be helpful for other. I also gave my TOEFL, before giving TOEFL I had decided that I will share my experience only if I get good marks I mean 100+ . I scored 93 so I quit that idea, thinking it won’t be helpful for others because of not great score. But your post give me courage to post my experience from here onwards.

  5. Dude, awesome presentation…U made it very interesting
N the highlight sentence was “we were made to leave all things there except passport, PANT and SHIRT.” LOL 🙂
