GRE Score Reporting

GRE scores have to be reported to universities to consider applications for graduate school admission.

GRE scores can be reported to 4 universities for free at end of a GRE exam, if you decide to accept the scores.

I have written in previous post about reporting GRE scores to 4 universities. However, many students find it hard to forward GRE scores to additional universities.

You can spend $12 more and get faster GRE Score Reporting.

Use the universities list to find schools to apply or find schools based on average GRE exam cores.

GRE Score Reporting

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has very good guide that will help you to report GRE Scores with less effort.

However, if you don’t have an international credit card, then it will be difficult to send GRE score reports to universities and colleges of your choice.

It costs $20 for each additional school to forward GRE Scores. GRE exam fees include the score reporting to 4 schools.

So the best way to save $80 is to make use of that GRE score reporting at the end of a GRE exam. [How to Register for a GRE Exam.]

GRE General Test Scores Reporting Options

There are different ways to report GRE Scores to Universities. Time it takes for the universities to receive the score depend on computer-based or paper-based tests.

Computer-based General Test

Official Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing scores will be sent to you and the universities within 10 to 15 days after you take the test.

If you take the GRE exam on January 10, scores will be sent between January 25 to January 30.

Paper Based GRE General Test

If you take this GRE exam on October 25, 2008, scores will be reported approximately by December 5, 2008.

Additional GRE Score Reports by Phone

Usually, students have to forward scores to more universities. In that case, students can use the phone service to forward GRE scores to up to 8 universities per phone call.

However, there is an additional fee of $12 per phone call, plus $20 to each university your scores will be forwarded.

GRE score reports from computer-based tests will be mailed within 10-15 days after the test date.

[How much does GRE Cost?]

  • Reporting to 4 schools by phone, you will have to pay $12 + ($20 x 4).
  • Forwarding GRE Scores to 10 schools, then 2 separate phone calls have to be made.
First, a phone call will cost $12+ (8×20), a second phone call will cost another $12+ $(2×20), and of course you will have to pay for international phone connection fee.

Additional GRE Score Report by Mail

If you want to save $12 in phone calls, then you use the snail mail for GRE score reporting. But it will take additional time for the universities to receive the scores.

You can use credit card, money order, or demand draft to pay for scores reported through snail mail.

It will take 10 days to send the scores to universities. Some schools get scores in CDs twice a month and some schools through SCORELINK used by ETS.

But your check or demand draft has to be cleared first before they can forward your GRE scores.

Online GRE Score Reporting

ETS has recently launched an online GRE score reporting option. You can read more about this online GRE Score Reporting here.

  15. "GRE TAKEN TWICE, BUT RECEIVED THE SAME SCORE CARD AGAIN. DID NOT RECEIVE THE SECOND ATTEMPT SCORE CARD"

Hi.. i have taken GRE "twice".. first in sep '08 and second in sep '09.. i scored 1060 anD mentioned 4 universities… the second time i scored 1130..

After i had taken the test for the second time, i received the score card, but it was the score card of the first attempt…

i applied for 3 univ's with my "first (1060)" score, and the 3 univ's that i applied, i did not mention them in the free reporting.

So when i received my score card after second attempt, It was the first attempt score card, but with the name of the 3 universities that i applied..

    1. Why is this so?

    2. When will i be receiving my score card for the second attempt?

    3. Is this supposed to happen or a mistake?

The second time i have taken the test, i have mentioned 4 other univ's and applied for 1 univ from that 4….

Q: And what is "cumulative" score?

  16. What happens after sending the GRE score report? Can you apply for admission one year after sending the GRE score report?

    1. Re: kav's question

After you take the GRE and send your scores out, they're kept on file by those universities. You would need to check with each individual institution to see if they still have your score report. Some keep your records for as long as five years, some as little as six months.

  17. Hi,

I just wanted to ask how long does GRE score last. I took the exam in 2006. Would this still be valid. Could I still request my score to be sent to universities?

    1. GRE Scores are valid for 5 years from the date you took the exam. So, your scores are valid till 2011.
