Question about admission to Masters program in Bioinformatics.

i am doing BE biotech under gre score is 15oo and toefl score is 113. but my BE aggregate is 61% with 2 backlogs. i am working for cognizant (an IT
company) also doing a part time research assistant job at iisc. i plan to work  for 2 years..i have just started out. i have a research paper published in my
area of interest..and also hold a part time diploma in bioinformatics which is  my area of interest.

do i stand a chance of getting into a grad school for bioinformatics ? (i topped my university in the final semester)..will manage to  get good recco letters and SOPs. What r my realistic chances of getting into a grad school in us?

  • Your backlogs hardly matters with GRE Scores of 1500 and TOEFL 113.
  • Does your work in CTS related to Bioinformatics?
  • Bioinformatics is specialized version of Software programming with understanding in Bio aspects ( Sequencing, Pattern Matching algorithms,..) you need to develop strong programming skills ( usually C, Perl and strong data structures)
  • Universities in US offer Masters in Bioinformatics or Masters in Computer Science with Bioinformatics Major.
  • Students with programming background or Computer Science degree will find it easier to adapt to Bioinformatics than students with Biotechnology, Chemistry  backgrounds.
  • It would be better if you can select M.S. in Computer Science with Bioinformatics Major as an option. You will have wider options to find a job.
  • You an search for jobs as Software Engineer as well as Bioinformatics Specialist.

I have done B.Tech in Biotechnology and currently I am working as a Developer at Cognizant Technology Solution. Since my inclination has now drifted towards software I am planning to opt for MS in Bioinformatics in US. Can you please help me to select good Universities and also can you mail m sample LOR’s?

I 've completed my graduation agri. engineering in 2009 with 6.71/10 CGPA.

But the problem is, i've completed my degree in 5yrs. instead of 4yrs. So will this affect my chances of getting admission in US (looking forward for fall'11, appearing GRE by oct'10) , also does my SSC & HSC marks affect my profile. Also what if one scores 1400+ in GRE but less in analytical writing (less than 3 /6)

i have a backlog in my PG(M.Tech) will that affect my prospects of getting PHD admission in US even if i have a GRE score of 1400.

wow! guys it's very interesting theme for me too! I've done my BE in Biology and now I'm about to do 2 years of my internship Position in Institute of Protein Research (Russia), group of Bioinformatics. I think it will help me to obtain all necessary computer programming skills. Afterwards i'm planning on to apply for Fulbright scholarship for MS degree in USA.

      Hey Maxim!

I'm also doing my B.E in biotech. What you're doing is very inspiring! How did you find out about this internship?

I am a 3rd year Btech Chemical engg student.I have a gre score of 1260 with 800 in quants. Its a bit low being an engineering student. But still I have a decent profile with cgpa of 9, a prior project at iitb and another project this summer which i'll be carrying out at FU Berlin, through DAAD scholarship.
I would like to apply for MS in genetics or biotech.
What good a chance do i stand?
