What is Good GRE Score for Grad School Admission?

Question posted by Happy Schools Blog’s Facebook Fan – Indranil

Today I gave my GRE for the first time .I got 1210(730 in Apt and 480 in Verbal).AW result is still awaited. Is my score good enough  to study MS in Computer Sc in some good US university. If yes can anyone please suggest some university name.I was expecting 1300 but my Verbal got screwed up and i end up getting a very low score. Can anyone please help me out regarding this.I have a work exp of about 4 yrs in the top MNC firm in India. And my college DGPA is also 8.4 out of 10.
Please help its urgent I need to apply college accordingly then.

Good GRE Score?

“Good GRE Score” is relative.  Can you get admission with 1210 – Yes.

Since your target is GRE Score was 1300;  GRE score of 121o is not bad score. If you had scored less than 1100 then its not good score.

If you can improve your score to 1350+ by January, retake GRE (When to Retake GRE?).  I would suggest the following

  • start application process with your current score
  • apply to universities by end of November to 1st week of December
  • study for GRE
  • retake GRE in January/Feb
  • if your score is higher than 1210, forward the scores again to schools
  • (or) apply for new set of universities
  • (or) if score is above 1400 apply for different universities and get transfer for Spring 2012.

  9. Dear HSB & Veterans ,

how you all doing ? I'm writing this email in order to choose from the university from where I have got Admit from UT Arlington (I.E.(Industrial Engineering) Deptt.) & University of Central Florida(UCF)(I.E. Spec..simulation & modeling) for Spring 2011.I have faced the rejection from U Toledo(I.E.) and IIT Illinois(MITO) but that is not relevant.

I considered UT Arlington and UCF on following basis

    UT Arlington

Cheap school Tuition fees 26 K for two years.

Job prospect are ok as Texas has good number of Mech Engg. companies.

scrolling through UT Arlington website I did not see any research project hence I assumed that there are less opportunities of getting R.A. hence getting tuition waiver or getting entitled to Instate Tuition waiver.UT Arlington has not many tieups like the UCF is having

    UCF

44K Tuition fees for two years

job prospect are ok,lots of research project, lots of tie up with good companies

I would request Alumni and HSB to please help me decide what to choose

    WEBHV

PS: I'm considering to pay up only for 1st semester then go for scholarship for rest of my studies loan option for whole studies is also there but I want to take minimum loan interest loan are eye grouching 10.5%

  10. 1070-1310 in 45 days

I have been preparing for gre from february and gave my first gre on 16th september and my score was 1070.It was disaster for me but i never give up and started preparing for gre again right away and booked my gre again on 2nd november and finally got 1310.

      1. Hi HSB !!

Thanks for ur reply. I m happy to share my GRE and TOEFL experience. pl let me know the email id to which i can mail my write up. Thanks again in advance.

          1. The dream started when I was nearing the completion of my 3rd year when I decided to be more involved into my stream of engineering. The moment I decided I wanted to do my Masters, many questions queued up in my mind as to how to go about the preparation about GRE and when to apply and what will be a decent score to get a good university. It was at that time one of my seniors suggested me to visit HSB and I am happy to tell that right from my preparation till now (I m on the verge of applying to universities) HSB has been one stop source of information for me. I had mixed experiences in my GRE and TOEFL exams. I m sure sharing my experiences will help other people.

I booked my first GRE in the month of August hoping that I will have enough time after my GRE exam to work on the universities selection. I had decent preparation given the short span before exam. Thanks to HSB again I was able to find materials without much search. With my preparation I was expecting a score of 1350+ but being the first time I panicked seeing the timer running. I had my Quants as my first section and it went well given the practice that I practiced from Nova. The verbal section was tougher as I had to deal with long RCs and that made me mess up my Verbal section as I got the initial few questions wrong. This made me score low in verbal and hence my overall score was low. I got 760 in quants and 450 in verbal and hence 1210 in total with 3.5 in AWA. I was depressed and thought of dropping my idea of Masters. But I searched HSB and found that the score was not that bad and there was also post about retaking GRE and that gave me confidence to retake GRE.

I took GRE again in a months’ time and this time I made sure that I should not panic even though my preparation was bit less than the previous time. It all started with the same with analytical section then it was followed by verbal section. I did not panic this time and it made me think clearly and answer properly. I was happy about my verbal performance and that confidence helped me perform better in quants section. I ended up getting 740 and 560 in quants and verbal respectively. I got an increase of 0.5 in awa. I came back and referred to HSB to decide on the universities and found that they give the accurate info considering other sources. HSB gave me the confidence to carry forward with my application process.

Gave my TOEFL two days after my GRE and with this short span in hand for preparation HSB pointed rightly to the books I can use for TOEFL preparation. With some preparation I gave my TOEFL and the all the sections like reading, listening, speaking and writing went well though I was bit lacking in speaking section I managed to score 107.

HSB has been a part of my journey to Masters and I m sure I can look up to HSB for any doubt in the process. This will be the first site that I would recommend to anyone who plan to do their higher studies. Thanks a lot HSB for guiding me. I hope it will continue this service to lots of aspirants all over the world.

    HSB PLS HELP.

    1. I think you have scored enough in GRE to get into a really good university considering your academic and work performance. You must apply to all top universities. Surely you will get into a top university. Just make sure you enter into a university where your particular field is good enough.

    2. Did you see other list of universities in this thread. Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech seems to be common theme. Why not look into other top schools?

      1. Thanks a lot ,HSB and Shrish .Since i was Skeptic with my
performance and planning to retake gre ,now you have bolstered my
        confidence.

      2. hi this sashank my gre score is math 770 and verbal -370.i have done my undergraduation in electronics and communication and have a gpa of 76%.i have a research paper and two good projects.so pls can you suggest me some good university suiting my profile

  25. Hello Everybody

This is Preethi, I have completed my Bachelors in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology which is one of the rare course in India, and I am going to take my GRE in a couple of weeks, my problem is I am basically a science student, and I am not in touch with maths, so it is impossible for me to score 1200 and above, Can anyone of you tell me approximately how much should I get in my GRE. Is 900 okay for paramedicals

    1. I see pessimism already. What does being science student got to do with not scoring in math. If your target score is 900 you will end up with 800.

  26. Hi HSB,
My question is regarding GPA. My university is very stingy in terms of awarding marks. Above 70% is considered distinction. I used World Education Services to convert my marks to 4.0 scale and it's showing 3.77. Is it a true reflection of my marks, and more importantly is it a good GPA?

      1. I know WES is good. But does somebody know exactly how it works. I mean by CGPA is 8.68/10 and wen i used WES i got a 3.98/4. That sounds absurd.

  27. Hi HSB,

Thank you that your websites are very helpful for me. I got GRE score of 1440 (660V, 780Q) and iBT TOEFL 92. My college major was Automation(under electrical engineering in some universities in US or under Mechanical engineering in other universities), now I want to apply for MS in computer science for Fall 2011. I think I have solid background on CS according my independent study and 3 years work experience. But I am not optimistic about my GPA, overall 75%, last two years 80% and the bad thing is that my Math part is only 68% as most CS admissions require decent records for Math, I do think my math was improved with the evidence that I got 85% (it is equal to A in my school) on my core courses which need considerable understanding of math.

Based on my situation, would you please suggest how to maximize my chances to get admission? I am interested in going to following universities:

    1. University of California, Irvine

    2. University of California, Riverside

    3. Texas A&M University

    4. University of Texas, Dallas

    5. University of Texas, Arlington

    6. University of Houston

    7. California State University, Fullerton

smaller number, more interest to me.

Thank you very much for your quick suggestions in advance.

  28. Hi HSB,

I am Rohit Guttal. I got a GRE score of 1290 (800Q, 490V) and TOEFL 104. I was hoping for a 1300+. Is my low verbal score going to affect my chances of getting admission greatly. I am applying for MS in Electrical Engineering for fall 2011 in following universities:

    University of Maryland College Park

    University of Southern California

    Arizona State University

    University of Florida

University of Texas, both Dallas & Arlington

    Iowa State Universities

Please help me out with your valuable suggestion

    Thank You

  29. Hi all,

I took GRE last week and my score was 1280 (800Q, 480V). I'm planning to apply for a PhD in Computer Science in some of the top 20 universities and most of the deadlines are in December second week. I have 2 queries –

1.) Is my score sufficient for a good admit given that other aspects of my application are strong ?

2.) Should I retake GRE (in December or January)? If so, will the universities get my score report in time ?

Please send in your valuable comments. Thanks in advance 🙂

  30. hello all,

I got 1290 (Q-740, V-550) and still have to give my TOEFL. I want to apply for MS in agriculture.I have started writing mails to professors but still not getting any positive response. Can anybody please tell me should I apply directly to the universities?? What about the funding??

    Please help me…

    1. hey m too applying for MS in agriculture. I think thats a decent score for an agriculture student. Try to search the Profs according to your area of interest, it's really a tedious job and frustrating too. A good number of assistantships are available in plant and soil science. Which subject are you applying for?

    2. Funding for MS programs is very limited and only in rare cases funding is assured before applying.
I would suggest applying to the universities directly and then contacting professors regarding their projects that you would be interested in. This way, not only will you get aligned in their research but also improve your chances of getting admitted.

  31. Hello all,
I got 1140(Q-650 V490) in GRE and 98 in TOEFL. I have 81% in my UG. I am planning to do MS in Telecommunications. Can someone tell me the universities that offer this course? The problem is, not all universities have Telecommunications as a separate major. Many universities have Wireless/Telecommunication papers under Electrical. I do not know how to make a decision. Can someone please suggest!

    1. Hello Vidhya

You are right in that most universities offer MS in Telecommunication under Electrical branch. I think there is no problem with that as far as they provide you specialisation in that field its good. In fact its not possible to open new departments for each such specialisation.

Its for organisational purposes that its under Electrical Department.

      1. Thanks for your reply Rakesh.
Can you suggest universities that offer courses in Telecommunications under Electrical?
The reason why its difficult to sort out is because when we go for Electrical and choose Telecom we have to choose subjects other than Wireless/Telecom too where as when we go for specialisation in Telecomm all the subjects are related to it and it looks quite interesting.
Can anyone suggest universities that match my profile?

    2. hi……vidya

Your TOEFL , GRE and Academic score is excellent. Yu can apply at Steven Institue of Technology, Florida Institute of Technology, Worcester plytechnic. All colleges are good for wireless/Telecommunication.

      1. Thanks for your wishes. Ya I have checked out on the universities you have suggested. I guess Florida Inst of Tech and Steven are private universities. I would look forward for state universities as they might provide better funding.(as far as i know)!

Could someone suggest state universities that match my profile?

  32. My GRE score is 1140 (760 Quant, 380 Verbal). I am B.E. (Hons), Chemical engineering graduate from BITS Pilani Goa (2008 pass out) with a CGPA of 7.68. I have 2 years work exp as a scientist in Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO in the field of Polymers, Ceramics and Composites. I am planning to apply for Phd in material science for Fall 2011. I have sent my GRE scores to
    University of Florida
    University if texas, Austin
    Ohio State University
    University of Arizona
and thinking of following options too
    Pennsylvania state university
    North Western University

kindly comment whether my options are fine or should I think of any other options. What may be the possibility of getting admission with scholarship in the above universities. I am not at all willing to register for admission without funding/scholarship as I already have a job in hand. Please respond as early as possible

    Thank you

    Rajasekhar

  33. i got my gre score as 1180 with quant-740 and verbal-440,awa-3.5.my toefl score is 95 with 22 plus in every section.i wanted to do ms in power systems..suggest me a few good universities for applying??

  35. Hi
I am going to usa for spring 2011 and Please let me know if gre and toefl required to get transfer to another university after 1st semester or only gpa of 1se semester enough ?

  36. Dear HSB,
Is commenting on these blogs the only way to communicate with you? Do you have an email id or a specific area in this site where we can ask you questions? Or have I missed something?

  37. I think you should apply to UT, Dallas and UT, Arlington. Also apply to University of North Carolina, Charlotte (UNCC). Everybody seems to get admission at UNCC. If I were you I would be happy if I got into UT, Dallas. They expect a minimum score of 1200 on the GRE.

P.S : Don't read too much into my comments. Am in the process of applying too.

  38. Hi

I am writing this again since i dint get reply for my last quest's. I have GRE score of 1170(Q-730, V-440) and AWA-3. I want to do my MS in EE. My aggregate is 73.6%. Kindly let me know which universities i stand a chance.. Universities i have in mind presently are-

    1. Texas at Arlington

    2. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

3.The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

    4.University of California, Berkeley

5.The University of Tennessee – Knoxville

    6.Virginia Tech

    Pls reply

    1. Hi Pradeepa,

I think 1170 is a decent score, but you are looking at very ambitious universities. I think you have a fair chance into UT-Arlington, a slightly more diminished chance at UNC-Chapel Hill and Tennessee-Knoxville. I would say stay away from Rutgers, UC-Berkeley or Virginia Tech.

      Regards,

      Sudeep

    2. 1. Texas at Arlington (YES FOR U SAFE UNIVERSITY)

      2. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (CANT SAY)

  39. Hi HSB i want to know one thing that ETS GRE prep.software contains only two tests then from where we can practice a whole test so we judge our score as you told we have to practice more and more until we not get a very good average score

    1. Hello Salman,

You can buy Kaplan's Books which have 3 cat's and many quants and verbal tests in the cd. It cost's around 1 grand. However If u dont want to buy kaplan u can always download the tests using torrents(though i dont support piracy). Its pretty good.
