How is it to select U.S. universities for graduate school admission?

This will be a 3 part article and by the end of 3 parts, you will be able to make a selection of U.S. universities with confidence and in the right way.

This guide will list 12 different questions you have to answer for every university before making a final decision.

U.S. University Selection Factors

  1. Tuition Fees
  2. Cost of Living
  3. Jobs after M.S.
  4. Internship
  5. Length of the Program
  6. Thesis/Non-Thesis
  7. International Student Population
  8. Quality of Education
  9. Climate/Location
  10. Current Student Satisfaction
  11. Can you Afford it
  12. Crime Rate in the area

The next posts will discuss the above 12 factors in detail. You have to understand that university selection is a time consuming process.

If you decide to do it on your own, it can be overwhelming for most of you.

With so many universities in the U.S.A. that offer a wide variety of courses and degrees, it will be tough to decide on the best 10 universities to apply for admission.

Just the effort alone differentiates prospective students from the rest of the group. [Why International Students are Unique Creatures?]

Don’t forget to read Parts 2 and 3 of this U.S. universities selection process article.

  1. How to Select U.S. Universities – Part 1 [Current Post]
  2. How to Select U.S. Universities – Part 2

  14. shri on March 18, 2013 at 3:17 PM

    Hi sir,
I am planning for MS in computer science for fall 2013. My GRE score is 297 [V-143 & Q-154] and writing section score is 2.5/6.
I completed my BE in Computer science from Mumbai Univ with distinction. Also from past 1 year I am associated with an UK based IT firm.
I am considering following universities on the basis of their location, program structure and rank.
Kent State Univ, SUNY Albany, San Diego State Univ, Florida International Univ, California Lutheran Univ., Univ of Central Missouri, Texas Tech Univ.
I am bit concerned about the last 3 universities. CLU has high fees. UCM has no national ranking but is very economical.
What do you suggest? Are the listed universities good in terms of placement?
Also is it advisable to go further with my average scores. What role does my distinction BE degree and job experience will play in the admission process?
Should I select good universities other than these listed above?
    Please help me here.

  15. Nandini on March 16, 2013 at 7:56 AM

I would like know which of these Universities would be better in terms of Course Structure and Placements.
    I am unable to decide.
    I have received admits from:
    Syracuse University – MS-Information management
University of Florida- MS in ISOM
University of Arizona- MS in MIS.
    Kindly let me know.
    Thanking you in anticipation,

    • HSB Counselor on March 16, 2013 at 3:00 PM

      Hi Nandini,
Well for course structure, you are the best judge to it. Check through the curriculum thoroughly. Try to get in touch with the faculty members and senior students.
Syracuse university finds a better place in rankings compared to University of Florida and University of Arizona. Also as Syracuse is in New York, you may have better prospects for internship and placements.
      All the best!

      • Nandini on March 17, 2013 at 3:23 PM

Thank you for the quick response.

I want to know in terms of ranking, Should I give preference to US-National Rankings or in particular the Course rank?

As you mentioned SU is ranked better than UOA. But UOA stands 3rd in MIS program in the US Best Rankings and Syracuse stands 1st among the list of i-schools and UFL is offered by
Hough B-School which is within top 15 top B-Schools in the US.

As a result, I am in dilemma to pick one amongst the three.

Also I wanted know abt UTD as I have an admit from them as well.Is it any better than the rest of the colleges list above.

I would like to know since Syracuse is in NY, would the salary offered be better than that in UFL or UOA.
I’ll be glad if you can let me know the range of Salary offered at SU. (Lowest-Highest)
        Kindly let me know.

        Thanking you,

Although there is no harm in online programmes. Choice should be totally based out on your family situation. An online programme will certainly help as you would be able to give sufficient time to to your family business.

hello sir,, I have taken my gre and scored 289 and ielts of 6.0.Iam having a undergraduate gpa of 8.9/10 or 3.7/4.0 . Will there be a problem for me during visa process sir??(F1 Process)

    • HSB Counselor on March 6, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Hi Ram, Yes GRE and IELTS score are on a lower side. Acads are certainly good. You will not find much trouble in the visa process if you have an admission offer from the University.
IELTS I believe you may need to retake as most of the Universities ask for 6.5 wit no band score less than 6.0.
      All the best!

  18. adixit70 on February 27, 2013 at 10:30 PM

hello sir I have completed m pharm.( pharmaceutical chemistry) with 77.06% but i dont have GRE score can I get admission in PhD in US universities? if yes then how?

    • HSB Counselor on February 28, 2013 at 1:05 AM

Hi Adixit, It is better to take up GRE scores as it adds to your profile and provides admission committee to assess your candidature. But yes if you have a strong research background, you may be accepted without GRE scores too.
But my advice would always be to take up GRE for a hassle free admissions process.

      Hi Snigdha,
Your relevant projects would help you get considered for projects in artificial intelligence in the University/department you apply to. All most all Universities offering a Masters in CS would be offering artificial intelligence as one of their research fields. For suggestions on Universities you can consider for Fall of 2013, kindly post your query in the forums section under appropriate thread.

none of the above colleges will provide funding for ms. but for phd funding is available in case of international students , but requires good scores and at least one published paper. If one doesnt have a paper funding at the time of joining is hard to get, but still afterwards one can try and get GRAs or TAs.

Nanotechnology and Embedded are two leading departments where UG graduate seek to do Masters. And your TOELF and GRE score is low if possible take TOEFL cos the minimum is 92+ required to assure 85% of chances for admission and GRE its very low bro need 295+

please educate me in the following subject. many students having degrees from substandard universities are going abroad with GRE criteria. i wonder how a candidate with nil knowledge gets accommodated in American universities. this is not applicable to merit students who studied in reputed campus. i am talking about those students who could not score 40% in EAMSET. please reply. i am retired aviation specialist coaching maths to higher classes. i know many incompetent students flown to states. what will be their fate. i want to restrict them to avoid future problem to them as well to their parents.

    • anil on July 20, 2012 at 5:43 PM

if they score great marks in gre that means they have good potential, dont think EAMSET is the golden line with which u judge a students worth…. u should probably think the other way around, why are students with great EAMSET scores not getting great gre scores ? probably because they are only good at mugging things and dont have a logical brain…. why are you saying that u r so worried about the students who went to the US becoz of their gre scores? i think u resent the fact that people u judged stupid are getting a chance at a better life than u envisioned for them…. 😀

It is difficult. You must be lucky to get into a college ranked from 1to 100.Try University of Southern California for MS. you will get it. Otherwise try colleges like Arizona tech, UMBC. My scores were almost same. i had a total of 1140 and academics of 85 in mu UG.I got into USC and UMBC only. Improve your GRE score if possible

I am dentist who graduated from india.i would like to pursue a masters degree in clinical research.I got 296/340(147-verbal,149-quant)..toefl-99/120.I s there anyone who can help me as i find very indians to opt in to this.I hadve a few queries: u need a masters/certificate program to get a job here? to find a mentor?is there any course/program that i can take inorder to have a research mentor for my masters in clinical research?
3.universities which are prominent in this program?

Hope someone can find answers to these questions.

    • vamsee on June 11, 2012 at 1:50 PM

      dear TJ,
I appreciate your aim to pursue masters in clinical research in the field of dentistry.however, the graduation (b.d.s) from india is not valid in united have an option called advanced placement programme for international dentists.more than ten universities have this program.all you need to do is to take nbde part 1 exam, and pass (75 on 100) it.if you are confident,u can take part 2 exam as well.but most universities need part 1 of nbde.then,u will be directly joining the 3rd year of d.d.s(equivalent to b.d.s in india) and u need to complete the final year as well.once you succesfully complete this programme,u will be awarded american d.d.s degree.later if you pass the exam for license,u can start practicing in u.s.a AND ALSO U WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO PURSUE A MASTERS DEGREE IN U.S.A.i am not sure whether we need a green card for pursuing masters and continuing education.

      all the best.

    Hi HSB,

I found that this is the most famous blog on internet providing the valuable information about the education in USA. But, I am planning to go canada for my post graduate study. I found that if study there 2 years then I can get 3 years of work-permit. I think in 3 years of time I can obtain good experience and can apply for the pr. So, after that I can easily move to USA. I think its best way to go USA because tuition fees are vey less compare to USA universities and chances of getting visa is more for canada. Following are my educational qualification regarding selecting course from canadian university or college,

    BE(IT) – 2010

    2 years of experience

    expecting 6.5 in IELTS.

Kindly, suggest good course, so that I can easily get job after study.

    Thank you all,

im planning for masters in gre score is 279/340.
My btech agregate is 70%.can u please suggest me if there any chanches for admission with that score.Yet to rite my toefl

    • venkat on June 3, 2012 at 11:47 AM

Better to retake u r gre ……Its too low …..

    • Sumanta Bose on June 5, 2012 at 5:17 AM

Archana, 279 is low for most of the good univs. You should estimate which univs. u r applying 2 b4 proceeding. if u plan to apply to the higher bracket, consider taking gre again. for engineering/ economics masters, they generally prefer a 160+ in math and 145+ in verbals, as a standard. all the best !

      • ram on June 5, 2012 at 10:17 AM

        hello archana,
as everyone suggested u .. u retake GRE and make sure ur TOEFL score is 90+ only then u will be confident abt ur admission

        • ram on June 9, 2012 at 10:53 AM

dont worry abt ur academic percentage .. although it’s just average it might not effect ur chances of getting decent u have a good GRE ..and most importantly try building a strong SOP … and ur work is done

Hi, I have taken up the GRE(297, Quants-150 English-147) and toefl (89). I am in the process of finalizing on which university to apply. But, totally confused about each university tuition fee. Could somebody explain about the credits and the hours which I see on the fee structure page of every university.

      • venkat on June 5, 2012 at 11:03 AM

Can u post the universities which u have selected such that we can know regarding them. Well, I hope u are confused with in-state and out-state tuition fees. See the in-state tuition fees is for the students who are residents of usa, where as out-state tuition fees is meant for international students …. When it comes to credits it varies from univ’s and u have contact the international adviser of that concern univ to get the details about the credits….

      • Siva on June 27, 2012 at 3:38 AM

Dear Vamshee krishna, Credit hours is basically a Unit of measurement that counts for your Graduate study. For eg ; a professional masters in CS would demand 30 credits. Presuming a course is 3 credits ( 3 hours of teaching /workload per course) . Hence you need to 10 courses.

Which universities accepts change in branch, If so what is the criterion to change, I am planning for spring 2013.. please help its urgent

        • Siva on June 27, 2012 at 4:32 AM

Dear Ram and Vineel, I am not sure about other Universities but I can comment based on Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT C) . There is a program called as bridge program in IIT C. This program is basically for students whose Majors doesn’t match their Intended Graduate Program. This bridge program basically is of 3 courses like
CS 201 – Intro to Java, CS 401 deals with data structures using Java.
CS 402 deals with Computer Architecture and Java, an intense course

If you have been working on Software projects for some time, it is possible to get you a waiver based on the proficiency exam that you need to take.

DEFICIENCY Course by definition is required to be done to plug knowledge gap that may exist in you in that area hence these courses DOESN’T carry credits to your Masters.

Hi, I am Robayet from Dhaka,Bangladesh.
I applied for the PhD program in Pharmaceutical sciences. The session is fall 2012.
    My credentials are listing below-
    GRE-1260 (V-490,Q-770,AWA-3.00),TOEFL-94(R-24,L-23,S-22,W-25),CGPA-3.86 (B.Pharm), CGPA-3.69(M.Pharm).I applied to the following institutions-
    1. University of Kentucky (Ranking-05) **
    2. University of Georgia (Ranking-24) **
    3. University of The Sciences in Philadelphia (31) **
    4. The State University of New Jersey, Rutgers (24) **
    5. University of South Carolina (42) **
    6. University of New Mexico (32) **

Fact is that one of my classmates has got admission into University of Georgia. He got the
Offer in February. After getting the news, I contacted the graduate coordinator and said that they are still evaluating applications & making offers. Final offers should be made in April. In that case, does it mean that I have a less chance of getting admission into University of Georgia
So, please give me some explanations regarding the admission in University of Georgia.
What are the chances of getting admissions into the institutions where I have applied for the PhD program?

  130. rohith on December 31, 2011 at 10:42 AM

i have taken GRE ,2 times , both in old format, first time i got 970(quant-740 , verbal-230) and second time 1050 (quant-670 , verbal-380), should i again take GRE in this new format?

    • Kasiraj on February 25, 2012 at 1:06 AM

      Hi Rohith ,
If you feel taking New pattern would increase your score , you can very well take a 3rd Attempt . As for your information , the Verbal in New Pattern is very Easier than the OLd pattern because of the Lots of Reading Comprehension and No Analogies and Antonyms section . So i guess you can very well improve your Verbal Score in New Pattern . Since you have gone down in quants in second attempt , if you think you can put little effort to increase it after having seen all the New syllabus for Quants in New Revised GRE , Then I would strongly suggest you to have a 3rd attempt which would surely be of Great Value if you put little more effort only in Quants .

Wish you All the Best !! 🙂 🙂

  131. kishore on December 29, 2011 at 11:39 AM

I am Mohan form A.P. My academics were average . My gre score was 279 and tofel 64. . .Am i eligible for doing M.S?

    • Kasiraj on February 25, 2012 at 1:15 AM

      Hi Mohan ,
You must have atleast 80 Above ( and some universities ask 20 above in Each Section )in TOEFL for doing MS in any good US Universities . So I would strongly Suggest you to take the TOEFL Exam again to score above 80 .
Regarding your GRE Scores ,I would say it is better you take that also again if and only if you think you can improve the score . But to be precise about your eligibilty , you need to mention you Verbal and Quants ( Each out of 170 ) . It would be much more better if you mention them out of 1600 using the concordance table( Used to convert New Pattern Score to Old Pattern Score ) . Here is the link for Converting your Scores to Old Pattern ( )

Anyways , for Now Wish You All The Best for your TOEFL Exams !!! 🙂

Hi, At the onset , I would like to appreciate HSB for their wonderful and encouraging writing which really motivate students and also helps in taking a correct decision to choose the University as well as the attitude to fight the challenges to achieve .. ,Well, speaking about me , I am pursing my Masters in Information Technology and into my 3rd Semester, ,Though I have scored above 65% in my 1st Sem and will surely try to complete my Masters with a good and sound percentage, Also preparing myself for GRE and TOEFL , Since it is a longing desire for me to study at US since class 10th, I have a doubt , whether MS and MSc. both are same? And after completion of MSc can I apply for MS ? There is also a serious doubt that I have and so would like to share with you, I did my grads on Zoology Honors and post which I find Information Technology very interesting so I skipped to IT,Would like to know will there is any concern into it in terms of enrollment for higher studies such as MS or Phd. in my near future…I will be anticipating your feedback into my queries…. Thanks

    • Rao.K.N on March 28, 2012 at 7:17 PM

Its really not complicated…. in USA GPA is for 4 that means maximum you could get in a exam is 4,where as in india (100) …if You get 80% that mean you got 80 out of 100(india)…….where as in USA –80 marks for 100, how much if the maximum marks allowed which is 4……= 4/100X80=3.2

    Hello HSB
I am looking forward to applying for MS in US for the fall 2012. I have answered my GRE and TOEFL last year scoring 1460 (Q660+ A800) and 112 respectively. I have a distinction (77%) aggregate in my under grad from Goa University. With these basic necessities taken care, I am hoping to apply and get admits from Georgia Tech, UCLA, Virginia Tech, University of Maryland, North Carolina. I have currently zeroed in on these universities. What are my chances in these, and also is it preferable to apply to some lower ranked universities too, with my scores? What about the scholarships and living expenses in the universities I mentioned?

    Hoping for valuable guidance.

i’m Mike from Nigeria.studied Mechanical Engineering. But I made a horribly pathetic GPA in my 1st degree studies(below 2.0)..ok before u crucify me or burst out lauhging, let me explain how it happened.I had expected to move to the U.S to complete my tertiary education because my family reside in the U.S and had filed for me to join them…so i focused more on the immigration issues and paid little attention to my academics here in Nigeria.I had believed i’d move to the U.S before graduation, since the U.S immigrations had approved my application…Unfortunately it didn’t turn out as i had expected.Due to the humongous number of applicants,it takes a lot of years to process the immigration stuff. …Now the question;is there any way i can pursue an MBA in any U.S school with such GPA???…i’m yet to write the GRE.but there’s no point writing the GRE if no school will accept such poor/pathetic GPA.

    • Tanvir on October 18, 2011 at 5:46 PM

Brother, i just want to encourage you about the fact that you must try to get yourself admitted taking the GRE. Remember something is better than nothing. If the the GPA is poor so what, you can do well in GRE and TOEFL. Best of luck.

    • shuba on October 20, 2011 at 3:49 AM

The only way to answer your Query is by asking you to go through UCLA’s Website.
Have a look at their Class Profile . The Class Profile shows the kind of students they usually give acceptance.

Regarding the Fees, some universities ask you to apply for scholarship well in advance. The best would be for you to contact the desired person of the University. Email them all your specific Questions.

If you are a very regular reader of HSB. Why dont you have a look at the articles 🙂

      Good Luck..

      • Varun Kumar on December 29, 2011 at 8:42 PM

Sorry to say but UCLA doesn’t confirm scholarships in advance. They look at a lot of things. Why don’t you people forget that US universities give preference to US citizens first and then they make exceptions if they find talent in other categories. Additionally, they would help you with your tuition or housing in campus. They not gonna support you fully. Come prepared and have multiple options. Nobody gonna reply from there unless you contact the International student counsellor and you actually apply.

With your GRE score it is difficult to get a scholarship.
You can still apply in tier 2 universities.

My daughter is a MS aspirant. I thank HSB and this blog for helping me to understand about higher education in USA. I closely followed this blog and helped my daughter to select universities that would exactly fit her profile. She applied to 7 universities for MS Computer Science for Fall 2011. So far she has got admit from

three namely UNCC, Texas Tech and UTA. TAMUK is in the pipeline sending mails stating that she is eligible for merit scholarship. But she has not submitted her supplemental documents to this university. She scored only 1110 in GRE, 104 in Toefl. Over 80% from Anna university. Instead of applying to many dream universities, she applied to reach and safe universities to increase her chances of admission. I am grateful to this wonderful blog. Thank you once again.

I would like to advice people not to go to Texas A & M University, College Station, TX for doing Masters or Ph.D. programs. One reason is that it is next to impossible to get any funding especially in Engineering programs. They give admission to students, professors try to extract free research work from students by false promise of funding next semester, next year and it never comes. About job fair/career fair, company representatives openly say that they do not recruit international students. It is a very conservative and boring town. Avoid this university.

  232. Aaron D'Souza on November 5, 2010 at 5:07 AM

This is in reference to ur reply.

Thanks a lot for ur feedback. I actually do not want to get into industrial or mech engg per se. I found that in some colleges, the subjects in IT and cs can be chosen as electives for this course. The core subjects are more related to management and not to ind engg.

The reason I do not want to do an MBa is because :-

a> I do not have any work experience as I'm currently studying in the fourth year of engg in India.

b> I have not decided on what field I would do an MBa in.

I thus feel i should do an MS in EM. if you feel otherwise and for your views, please inform me immediately.

    • HSB on November 5, 2010 at 5:25 AM

Your argument is right, but in current job market you will be competing with guys who have degree in CS to get job. You are not true Engg Mgmnt to apply in industrial firms. I think MIS is better for you.

@Sasirekha You should be ok to get admission with 1100. If you have cleared all the backlogs then you should be fine. Internship adds more value to your application.

        Hii HSB,

I have a query on visa procedure.

Now I have completed M.Tech and I am looking to do MS (biotechnology) in USA. I have 74% in Integrated M.Tech (biotechnology) (Bioinformatics) 5 yr program. 1280 (560 verbal n 720 maths). Now i have a doubt regarding visa as I think d chances of getting rejected in interview is high due to repeated degree thing (like again MS tht too in biotech). Is that true or just a misconception.

Also i heard from many people r people r not getting visa in biotechnology courses. Is it so?

I m really confused and people r suggesting me to change my branch into bioinformatics but m really not interested in doing tht.

        Please help in this matter.
